Abstract

Purpose

The Embedded GPS/INS System (EGI) has been used more widely as central navigation equipment of aircraft. For certain cases needing high attitude accuracy, star sensor can be integrated with EGI to improve attitude performance. Since the filtering‐correction loop has already built in finished EGI product, centralized or federated Kalman filter is not applicable for integrating EGI with star sensor; it is a challenge to design multi‐sensor information fusion algorithm suitable for this situation. The purpose of this paper is to present a double‐layer fusion scheme and algorithms to meet the practical need of constructing integrated multi‐sensor navigation system by star sensor assisting finished EGI unit.

Design/methodology/approach

The alternate fusion algorithms for asynchronous measurements and the sequential fusion algorithms for synchronous measurements are presented. By combining alternate filtering and sequential filtering algorithms, a kind of double‐layer fusion algorithms for multi‐sensors is proposed and validated by semi‐physical test in this paper.

Findings

The double‐layer fusion algorithms represent a filtering strategy for multiple non‐identical parallel sensors to assist INS, while the independent estimation‐correction loop in EGI is still maintained. It has significant benefits in updating original navigation system by integrating new sensors.

Practical implications

The approach described in this paper can be used in designing similar multi‐sensor information fusion navigation system composed by EGI and various kinds of sensors, so as to improve the navigation performance.

Originality/value

Compared with conventional approach, in the situation that centralized and federated Kalman filter are not applicable, the double‐layer fusion scheme and algorithms give an external filtering strategy for measurements of finished EGI unit and star sensors.

Discusses the requirements in environmental monitoring ‐ primarily in aqueous environments. Detection of substances below the ppb‐level may be required. Many analytes lack intrinsic properties suitable for direct detection by a sensor. Therefore, separation, concentration, and chemical conversion may be required. Sensors may require calibration and conditioning. Efforts are taken to integrate these functions with sensor components to give integrated sensor systems, which allow unattended operation in the environment.

Abstract

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

During the past decades, several researchers have introduced devices that use sonar systems to detect and/or to determine the object location or to measure the distance to an object using reflected sound waves. The purpose of this paper is to use sonar sensor with textile structure and to test it for detection of objects.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a sonar system based on intelligent textiles approach for detection of objects has been developed. In order to do this, ultrasonic sensor has been integrated to textile structures by using conductive yarns. Furthermore, an electronic circuit has been designed; PIC 16F877 microcontroller unit has been used to convert the measured signal to meaningful data and to assess the data. The algorithm enabling the objects detection has also been developed. Finally, smart textile structure integrated with ultrasonic sensor has been tested for detection of objects.

Findings

Beam shape is presented related to identified object and compared with the actual one given in sensor's datasheet in order to test the efficiency of the proposed method of detection. The achieved results showed that the determined beam pattern matches with the actual one given in its datasheet. Therefore, it can be concluded that the integration of sensor was successful.

Originality/value

This is the first time in the literature that a sonar sensor was integrated into textile structure and tested for detection of objects.

Abstract

A review of integrated optical circuit technologies [OIC] and their relevance to potential OIC sensor application. Describes the manufacture of OICs and the varied range of material technologies used. Active Silicon Integrated Optical Circuits have been developed which may have applications for many optical sensor and fibre optic sensor systems. Concludes however that silicon integrated optics will not enjoy large‐scale success until their manufacturing costs have been dramatically reduced.

Abstract

Purpose

Design, fabricate and evaluate all-solid-state wearable sensor systems that can monitor ion concentrations in human sweat to provide real time health analysis and disease diagnosis capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

A human health monitoring system includes disposable customized flexible electrode array and a compact signal transmission-processing electronic unit.

Findings

Patterned rGO (reduced-graphene oxide) layers can replace traditional metal electrodes for the fabrication of free-standing all solid film sensors to provide improved flexibility, sensitivity, selectivity, and stability in ion concentration monitoring. Electrochemical measurements show the open circuit potential of current selective electrodes exhibit near Nernst responses versus Na+ and K+ ion concentration in sweat. These signals show great stability during a typical measurement period of 3 weeks. Sensor performances evaluated through real time measurements on human subjects show strong correlations between subject activity and sweating levels, confirming high degree of robustness, sensitivity, reliability and practicality of current sensor systems.

Originality/value

In improving flexibility, stability and interfacial coherency of chemical sensor arrays, rGO films have been the developed as a high-performance alternative to conventional electrode with significant cost and processing complexity reduction. rGO supported solid state electrode arrays have been found to have linear potential response versus ion concentration, suitable for electrochemical sensing applications. Current sweat sensor system has a high degree of integration, including electrode arrays, signal processing circuits, and data visualization interfaces.

Abstract

Purpose

The future construction site will be pervasive, context aware and embedded with intelligence. The purpose of this paper is to explore and define the concept of the digital skin of the future smart construction site.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a systematic and hierarchical classification of 114 articles from both industry and academia on the digital skin concept and evaluates them. The hierarchical classification is based on application areas relevant to construction, such as augmented reality, building information model-based visualisation, labour tracking, supply chain tracking, safety management, mobile equipment tracking and schedule and progress monitoring. Evaluations of the research papers were conducted based on three pillars: validation of technological feasibility, onsite application and user acceptance testing.

Findings

Technologies learned about in the literature review enabled the envisaging of the pervasive construction site of the future. The paper presents scenarios for the future context-aware construction site, including the construction worker, construction procurement management and future real-time safety management systems.

Originality/value

Based on the gaps identified by the review in the body of knowledge and on a broader analysis of technology diffusion, the paper highlights the research challenges to be overcome in the advent of digital skin. The paper recommends that researchers follow a coherent process for smart technology design, development and implementation in order to achieve this vision for the construction industry.
