Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationship linking hard technology innovation with the high-quality development (HDP) of SRDI firms. SRDI firms are typically classified as medium-sized to moderately scaled businesses renowned for their specialized, refinement, differentiation and innovation (SRDI), with a focus on providing exceptional products or services to gain a competitive advantage in specific market segments. These firms are dedicated to expanding market share and enhancing innovation capacities both locally and globally. The research also aims to scrutinize the contextual effects of digital transformation within this framework.

Design/methodology/approach

Hard technology innovation consists of three essential components: innovative characteristics, newly developed technology-based intellectual property rights and the volume of R&D initiatives. The evaluation of HDP was performed utilizing the entropy method, with a specific emphasis on assessing value creation and value management capabilities. Subsequently, this study explores the impact of technological innovation on the HDP of firms using a dual-dimension fixed effects model.

Findings

Every aspect of hard technology innovation is essential for promoting the HDP of businesses. The digital transformation of businesses exerts a heterogeneous moderating influence in this process. This is evident in the constructive impact on the connection between innovation attributes and the volume of fruitful R&D initiatives, as well as the HDP of firms. Conversely, the moderating effect is deemed insignificant in the association between new technology-based intellectual property and HDP.

Originality/value

This research delves deeper into the underlying mechanisms that underlie the promotion of HDP through hard technology innovation, thereby expanding the scope of our exploration on the HDP of SRDI firms. It establishes a theoretical framework and practical directives for achieving enhanced development quality amidst the evolving landscape of digital transformation within firms.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to gather insights from sport marketing professionals and identify key opportunities, challenges and knowledge that sport marketing educators and researchers could utilize in developing curriculum and research agendas.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative approach was used, and data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 sport marketing professionals. Participants were asked questions related to the knowledge, skills and experiences that they believe are important for students to have to be successful in the industry, as well as the types of research that would be most useful in their day-to-day work.

Findings

Industry professionals noted collaboration, transformation in digital marketing, data and analytics and experiential marketing as key trends facing the industry today. The findings suggest that sport marketing curriculum should focus on soft skill development such as communication, relationship building and empathy alongside hard skill development such as data analysis and storytelling. As well, findings show research areas where scholars can aid practitioners with a focus on consumer insights, technology, measuring ROI and experiential marketing.

Originality/value

With these findings, educators and scholars can better prepare students for successful careers in industry and contribute to the ongoing advancement of the scholarly field. This study serves as a starting point for further research in this area, and it is hoped that it will spark continued collaboration between academia and industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that determine the long-term readiness of UAE-listed companies to handle environmental, social and governance (ESG) related opportunities and disruptions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, we use S&P Global Ratings' ESG evaluation to assess the long-term preparedness of UAE-listed companies in addressing ESG risks and opportunities. The score for long-term preparedness provides a forward-looking, cross-sector analysis of a company’s capacity to operate successfully in the future, based on how ESG factors may affect stakeholders and lead to material direct or indirect financial impacts. Specifically, the paper investigates the corporate governance and ownership structure factors that significantly impact the ability of UAE-listed companies to effectively prepare for and respond to long-term ESG risks and opportunities. Our final sample consists of 48 listed companies observed over the period from 2019 to 2021. We employ an ordered logit model for our estimations.

Findings

Our paper findings provide evidence that (1) firm size has a positive significant effect on ESG rating and governance rating implying that larger firms have a robust governance system and strong ability to implement ESG strategies within the organization. (2) Firm performance measured by ROE looks to be an important determinant of ESG rating, environmental rating and social rating. (3) Firm leverage has a positive and significant effect on ESG rating and environmental rating. (4) Board size has a positive effect on social rating and governance rating. (5) Government ownership has a positive and significant effect on ESG rating, environmental rating and governance rating. (6) Institutional ownership has a positive and significant effect on governance rating.

Practical implications

This paper has several practical implications. First, by adopting a forward-looking upstream approach that identifies the determinants of long-term ESG preparedness, it supports the efforts of UAE regulators to enforce ESG strategies among listed firms. Second, the paper provides an overview of the long-term preparedness for ESG risks and opportunities for firms listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) and Dubai Financial Market (DFM), which can aid various stakeholders in making informed decisions. Third, the findings underscore the need to strengthen corporate governance mechanisms to promote sustainable development.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first to explore the determinants of long-term preparedness for ESG risks and opportunities among UAE-listed companies, utilizing a unique dataset to assess ESG performance. The research contributes to understanding the factors influencing firms' long-term readiness to handle ESG challenges and supports regulators' efforts to implement ESG strategies in the UAE market.

Abstract

Purpose

Food waste (FW) is a significant problem in the hospitality sector worldwide. The Covid-19 pandemic has imposed a health protocol on the hospitality sector to protect the customers and the community. This paper aims to evince a new understanding of the tourist city during the Covid-19 pandemic by exploring the effects of the new health protocol on FW management at the consumption stage in the hospitality sector in Dubai.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors use a scale assessment method and a survey distributed to 202 tables in 35 restaurants offering open buffet catering in Dubai.

Findings

The paper’s findings provide evidence that: first, the tourist city has faced substantial changes during the pandemic as the new health protocol imposed by the Covid-19 circumstances has mitigated the waste of food in the open buffet services. Second, the highest waste has been observed for vegetables, followed by grains (especially rice) and bread. The lowest waste has been observed for meat and fruits. Third, FW per table varies considerably by consumer groups. The FW quantity of residents is significantly higher than that of tourists. Family gathering tables with an essential number of children waste more food than the other group types. Fourth, consumers claimed to become more conscious about the quantum of FW as a direct response to the socio-economic circumstances imposed by the lockdown such as food availability, salary reduction, economic uncertainty and employment instability. Fifth, the attitude to keeping food on the plate does not change considerably.

Practical implications

This paper offers many practical implications. Using newly discovered pieces of evidence from practitioners, hoteliers and policymakers, this paper highlights current hospitality practices that can reduce the waste of food in a postpandemic world. Furthermore, our paper suggests a set of actions for restaurants offering open-buffet services to reduce FW at the consumption stage.

Originality/value

This paper adds significance to the extant tourist city literature. The tourist city served as an example of a recent urban development characterized mainly by tourist consumption. This research advances the understanding of FW management and customers’ behavior during the Covid-19 pandemic in an important touristic city “Dubai” and suggests a set of actions.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary objective of this paper is to determine the factors that affect the entrepreneurship propensity of students undergoing compulsory entrepreneurship education courses at various universities.

Design/methodology/approach

A research instrument was developed and implemented on a sample of 380 students who were offered compulsory entrepreneurship education courses at six major universities in the Jammu and Kashmir region of India. The study employed multiple cross-sectional designs with a simple random sampling technique to gather data. The collected data was subjected to descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling using SMART-PLS (Version 4).

Findings

The findings reveal that conceptualization, opportunity identification and implementation are the three antecedents of entrepreneurship propensity. The results indicate that the conceptualization factor is one of the most important predictors of entrepreneurship propensity, followed by opportunity identification, whereas implementation through education has the weakest influence on students' entrepreneurship propensity.

Practical implications

This research provides important insights to universities for designing and developing entrepreneurship courses that can foster the start-up culture. The results will be helpful for policymakers to devise various programs to boost entrepreneurship.

Originality/value

The study integrated the theories of planned behavior and human capital to evaluate the effectiveness of entrepreneurship courses at the university level. The three factors, namely, conceptual factors, actualization factors and implementation factors of entrepreneurship propensity are under-researched.

Purpose

This review aims to investigate the impact of Industry 4.0 on talent development, emphasizing the need to redefine talent for the future of work. By exploring the evolving job requirements, the research seeks to map the competencies essential for success in Industry 4.0 and provide insights for developing talent to stay competitive in the digital era.

Design/methodology/approach

The review uses a comprehensive literature review to systematically trace the evolution of talent and identify the evolving competencies needed for Industry 4.0. Drawing upon established theoretical frameworks of resource-based view, human capital theory and organizational learning theory, this review identifies key factors influencing talent development and Industry 4.0 competencies.

Findings

The findings reveal that the emergence of automated technologies has altered the traditional understanding of jobs and highlights the importance of talent development aligned with Industry 4.0. By investing in developing Industry 4.0 competencies, organizations empower employees to navigate change and remain competitive. Effective talent management strategies contribute to retaining talented individuals and achieving sustainable competitive advantage for organizations.

Practical implications

This study has implications for educational institutions in guiding their curriculum, for organizations to identify the skills and talents necessary to adapt to Industry 4.0 and for the government to inform policy changes that contribute to the global economy and promote a skilled workforce.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the existing literature by comprehensively examining talent in the context of Industry 4.0. It offers a nuanced understanding of the role of talent management in the intersection of talent, competencies and changing technologies in future-proofing organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess the rank of Shariah compliance (SC) and its impact on the financial performance of non-financial companies listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange. It seeks to understand the relationship between adherence to Shariah principles and the financial success of these companies, providing insights into the importance of SC in the Saudi Arabian context.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts a quantitative research approach, using financial and SC data from non-financial companies listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange. SC is measured using the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions standards. Financial performance is evaluated using various financial indicators, including return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and return on investments (ROI). Statistical analysis, including regression analysis, is conducted to examine the relationship between SC and financial performance.

Findings

The findings indicate a positive association between SC and financial performance in non-financial companies listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange. Companies with higher ranks of SC demonstrate superior financial performance, as evidenced by higher ROA, ROE and ROI. This suggests that adhering to Shariah principles can contribute to improved financial outcomes for companies operating in the Saudi Arabian market.

Practical implications

The study highlights the practical implications of maintaining SC for non-financial companies in Saudi Arabia. It emphasizes the importance of aligning business practices with Shariah principles to enhance financial performance. The findings suggest that companies can benefit from implementing Shariah-compliant strategies and practices, potentially attracting investors and improving their overall competitiveness in the market.

Social implications

The social implications of SC in the Saudi Arabian context are significant. Adhering to Shariah principles not only ensures compliance with religious and cultural norms but also promotes ethical and responsible business behaviour. Companies that prioritize SC contribute to the development of a socially responsible and sustainable business environment.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study represents the first investigation into the impact of SC rank on financial performance. By examining non-financial companies listed on the Saudi market, it contributes significantly to existing literature by providing empirical evidence supporting a positive correlation between SC rank and financial outcomes. The findings offer valuable insights for companies, investors and policymakers in Saudi Arabia, enhancing their understanding of the unique dynamics between SC rank and financial performance. This research enriches the body of knowledge in Islamic finance and business, making a notable contribution to the field and opening avenues for further exploration.

Purpose

The primary objective of this study is to examine the effects of integrating human-centric technology on the overall effectiveness of sustainable building practises. This study intends to address the knowledge gap regarding the influence of human-centered factors on the adoption of technology in the construction industry. Additionally, it wants to establish a strong correlation between the integration of technology and the promotion of sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

This research utilizes Partial Least Square Equation Modeling (SEM) as a comprehensive approach to analyze the intricate interrelationships within the building sector. This study examines a range of aspects, including “Change Management,” “Evaluation and Optimization,” “Integration and Coordination,” “Long-Term Planning,” “Safety and Compliance,” and “Training and User Engagement,” in order to evaluate their impact on the adoption of technology and the achievement of sustainable building outcomes.

Findings

The study reveals a robust and affirmative correlation between the use of human-centric technology and the attainment of success in the realm of sustainable building. The text elucidates the primary factors that influence the adoption of technology and underscores the need of adopting a comprehensive strategy that encompasses change management, adherence to safety standards, and optimization of resources.

Originality/value

This study contributes novelty by placing emphasis on the human-centric dimensions of technology adoption within the context of sustainable building. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how the Information Technology (IT) sector in India is changing sporadically to be relevant to be able to meet the changing demands. Companies are striving hard to be able to leverage any such factor that adds to the competitive advantage needed to survive in this dynamic market. Therefore, an organization has to be able to keep innovation as its primary objective.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a cross-sectional research design and the data from 303 IT professionals were used to validate the relationships among psychological capital (PSC), cognitive diversity (COD), temporal ambidexterity (TEA), innovative work behaviour (IWB) and adaptive performance (ADP). Hypotheses testing was done through the SEM and mediation analysis was conducted using bootstrap estimation in SPSS AMOS.

Findings

The results suggest that PSC significantly affects both IWB and ADP. COD has a significant effect only on IWB. In addition, directly impacts ADP. Mediation analysis indicates that COD has full mediation between the relationship of IWB and ADP, whereas PSC has a partial mediation. However, TEA has no mediation indicating that an employee needs to have support from his organization to be ambidextrous.

Originality/value

This study shows how significant innovation and IWBs are in the context of the IT sector and how positive thinking, a diverse set of people and the balance between short-term and long-term goals could promote IWBs in an individual leading to better ADP.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the effect of both apigenin-loaded zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) and apigenin only against cisplatin (CP)-induced experimental cardiotoxicity.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 32Wister rats (male) were randomly divided (n = 8) into four groups. Normal control group, CP group received CP (20 mg/kg); treated group I received CP and then received apigenin (0.78 mg/kg/day) orally; treated group II received CP and then received apigenin loaded ZnONPs. At the end of the experiment (10 days), samples were extracted from each rat for the assessment of complete blood picture, lipid profile, atherogenic indices, oxidative status, inflammatory and cardiotoxicity markers as well as histological examination.

Findings

The results indicated that CP produced significant alterations in the complete blood picture, lipidemic profile, atherogenic indices, antioxidation capacity and cardiac inflammatory markers as well as function enzymes as compared with the control group. Administration of apigenin only showed a non-significant change in the atherogenic indices, oxidative status and cardiotoxicity parameters, indicating incomplete cardio-protection against CP upon. Additionally, all the observed alterations in CP group were reversed when apigenin nanoparticle at lower dose was used with ZnONPs which was also confirmed by histopathological investigation.

Originality/value

The apigenin loaded ZnONPs exert protective effects against CP-induced experimental cardiotoxicity and improved cardiac function, suggesting a potential adjuvant role of apigenin nanoparticles against cardiotoxicity.
