Abstract

Purpose

We propose an elaboration of the social structure and personality framework from sociological social psychology that is intended to promote integration across social psychological traditions and between social psychology and sociology, using the study of inequality as an example.

Methodology/approach

We develop a conceptualization of “generic” proximate processes that produce and reproduce inequality in face-to-face interaction: status, identity, and justice.

Findings

The elaborated framework suggests fundamental questions that analysts can pose about the macro-micro dynamics of inequality. These questions direct attention to the “how” and “why” of macro-micro relations by connecting structural and cultural systems, local contexts, and the lives of individual persons; highlighting implicit processes; making meaning central; and directing our attention to how people act efficaciously in the face of constraint.

Practical implications

Applying this framework, scholars can use existing theories and generate new ones, and can do so inductively or deductively.

Social implications

Research on inequality is enriched by social psychological analyses that draw on the full complement of relevant methods and theories.

Originality/value

We make visible the social psychological underpinnings of sociological research on inequality and provide a template for macro-micro analyses that emphasizes the centrality of social psychological processes.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines how the distribution of opinions and social status combine in a collectively oriented task group to affect perceptions about the correctness of a final decision.

Design/methodology/approach

We relied on data from a controlled laboratory experiment to test a series of theoretically derived hypotheses.

Findings

The study shows that both the distribution of opinions and status affect perceptions of correctness. It also establishes that the effects of status on uncertainty are strongest when the group is initially evenly split about the correctness of an opinion, and that like the distribution of opinions, the effects of status on uncertainty are curvilinear.

Research limitations/implications

Previous research shows that by integrating research on faction sizes with status characteristics theory (SCT), more accurate predictions of social influence are possible. Assumed therein is that people use information about the distribution of opinions and status to reduce uncertainty about correctness of a choice. The current study establishes this point empirically by examining the effects of the distribution of opinions and status in a four-person, collectively oriented task group. Future research should consider groups of different sizes and other moderating factors.

Originality/value

This study advances and elaborates upon previous research on social influence that integrates research on faction sizes with SCT.

Abstract

Purpose

The sharing economy is a socio-economic system in which individuals acquire and distribute goods and services among each other for free or for compensation through internet platforms. The sharing economy has attracted the interest of the academic community, which examined the phenomenon from the economic, social and technological perspectives. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

Given the lack of an overarching analysis of the sharing economy, this paper employs a quantitative content analysis approach to explore and synthesise relevant findings to facilitate the understanding of this emerging phenomenon.

Findings

The paper identified and grouped findings under four themes, namely: collaborative consumption practices, resources, drivers of user engagement and impacts, each of which is discussed in relation to the three main themes, aiming to compare findings and then put forward an agenda for further research.

Originality/value

The paper offers a balanced analysis of the building blocks of the sharing economy, to identify emerging themes within each stream, to discuss any contextual differences from a multi-stakeholder perspective and to propose directions for future studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to obtain the numerical scheme of finding the numerical solutions of arbitrary order partial differential equations subject to the initial and boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors present a novel Green-Haar approach for the family of fractional partial differential equations. The method comprises a combination of Haar wavelet method with the Green function. To handle the nonlinear fractional partial differential equations the authors use Picard technique along with Green-Haar method.

Findings

The results for some numerical examples are documented in tabular and graphical form to elaborate on the efficiency and precision of the suggested method. The obtained results by proposed method are compared with the Haar wavelet method. The method is better than the conventional Haar wavelet method, for the tested problems, in terms of accuracy. Moreover, for the convergence of the proposed technique, inequality is derived in the context of error analysis.

Practical implications

The authors present numerical solutions for nonlinear Burger’s partial differential equations and two-term partial differential equations.

Originality/value

Engineers and applied scientists may use the present method for solving fractional models appearing in applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the Gramian solutions and solitonic interactions of a (2 + 1)-dimensional Broer–Kaup–Kupershmidt (BKK) system, which models the nonlinear and dispersive long gravity waves traveling along two horizontal directions in the shallow water of uniform depth.

Design/methodology/approach

Pfaffian technique is used to construct the Gramian solutions of the (2 + 1)-dimensional BKK system. Asymptotic analysis is applied on the two-soliton solutions to study the interaction properties.

Findings

N-soliton solutions in the Gramian with a real function ζ(y) of the (2 + 1)-dimensional BKK system are constructed and proved, where N is a positive integer and y is the scaled space variable. Conditions of elastic and inelastic interactions between the two solitons are revealed asymptotically. For the three and four solitons, elastic, inelastic interactions and soliton resonances are discussed graphically. Effect of the wave numbers, initial phases and ζ(y) on the solitonic interactions is also studied.

Originality/value

Shallow water waves are studied for the applications in environmental engineering and hydraulic engineering. This paper studies the shallow water waves through the Gramian solutions of a (2 + 1)-dimensional BKK system and provides some phenomena that have not been studied.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present article is to obtain the similarity solution for the shock wave generated by a piston propagating in a self-gravitating nonideal gas under the impact of azimuthal magnetic field for adiabatic and isothermal flows.

Design/methodology/approach

The Lie group theoretic method given by Sophus Lie is used to obtain the similarity solution in the present article.

Findings

Similarity solution with exponential law shock path is obtained for both ideal and nonideal gas cases. The effects on the flow variables, density ratio at the shock front and shock strength by the variation of the shock Cowling number, adiabatic index of the gas, gravitational parameter and nonidealness parameter are investigated. The shock strength decreases with an increase in the shock Cowling number, nonidealness parameter and adiabatic index, whereas the strength of the shock wave increases with an increase in gravitational parameter.

Originality/value

Propagation of shock wave with spherical geometry in a self-gravitating nonideal gas under the impact of azimuthal magnetic field for adiabatic and isothermal flows has not been studied by any author using the Lie group theoretic method.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors examine how different exchange patterns affect structurally disadvantaged actors' interactional justice evaluations and group identification in situations characterized by reciprocal and negotiated exchange.

Methodology

Laboratory experiment.

Findings

Although results replicate prior work finding that disadvantaged individuals view their exchange partners as less fair when exchanging via negotiation rather than reciprocation, they also show the value of considering the pattern of exchange. Indeed, both the form of exchange and the pattern of exchange prompt exchange behaviors that shape how disadvantaged actors view the exchange experience, such that much of the direct effect of the form of exchange is offset by indirect paths, especially when the disadvantaged actor remains committed to their more advantaged partner. These fairness evaluations matter because as the authors show, they affect perceptions of group identification.

Research Limitations

Future work should more explicitly consider how emotions as well as different levels of inequality might modify the processes described.

Originality

This chapter highlights the need to consider both the form of exchange and the relative stability of exchange when considering the fairness perceptions and group identification of disadvantaged individuals.

Abstract

Drawing on qualitative interviews with formerly imprisoned people in Canada, we show that most prisoners experience reentry into communities with little to no prerelease planning, and must rely upon their own resourcefulness to navigate fragmented social services and often informal supports. In this respect, our research findings contrast with much US punishment and society scholarship that highlights a complex shadow carceral state that extends the reach of incarceration into communities. Our participants expressed a critical analysis of the failure of the prison to address the needs of prisoners for release planning and supports in the community. Our findings concur with other empirical studies that demonstrate the enduring effects of the continuum of carceral violence witnessed and experienced by prisoners after release. Thus, reentry must be understood in relation to the conditions of confinement and the experience of incarceration itself. We conclude that punishment and society scholarship needs to attend to a nuanced understanding of prisoner reentry and connect reentry studies to a wider critique of the prison industrial complex, offering more empirical evidence of the failure of prisons.
