Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the mechanism and filter efficacy of accumulation generation operator (AGO)/inverse accumulation generation operator (IAGO) in the frequency domain.

Design/methodology/approach

The AGO/IAGO in time domain will be transferred to the frequency domain by the Fourier transform. Based on the consistency of the mathematical expressions of the AGO/IAGO in the gray system and the digital filter in digital signal processing, the equivalent filter model of the AGO/IAGO is established. The unique methods in digital signal processing systems “spectrum analysis” of AGO/IAGO are carried out in the frequency domain.

Findings

Through the theoretical study and practical example, benefit of spectrum analysis is explained, and the mechanism and filter efficacy of AGO/IAGO are quantitatively analyzed. The study indicated that the AGO is particularly suitable to act on the system's behavior time series in which the long period parts is the main factor. The acted sequence has good effect of noise immunity.

Practical implications

The AGO/IAGO has a wonderful effect on the processing of some statistical data, e.g. most of the statistical data related to economic growth, crop production, climate and atmospheric changes are mainly affected by long period factors (i.e. low-frequency data), and most of the disturbances are short-period factors (high-frequency data). After processing by the 1-AGO, its high frequency content is suppressed, and its low frequency content is amplified. In terms of information theory, this two-way effect improves the signal-to-noise ratio greatly and reduces the proportion of noise/interference in the new sequence. Based on 1-AGO acting, the information mining and extrapolation prediction will have a good effect.

Originality/value

The authors find that 1-AGO has a wonderful effect on the processing of data sequence. When the 1-AGO acts on a data sequence X, its low-pass filtering effect will benefit the information fluctuations removing and high-frequency noise/interference reduction, so the data shows a clear exponential change trends. However, it is not suitable for excessive use because its equivalent filter has poles at the non-periodic content. But, because of pol effect at zero frequency, the 1-AGO will greatly amplify the low-frequency information parts and suppress the high-frequency parts in the information at the same time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to calculate slotting-based eddy currents in permanent magnet excited synchronous machine (PMSM) taking into account axial and circumferential segmentation of magnets.

Design/methodology/approach

An analytical approach to calculate eddy current losses in PM caused by slotting harmonics of PMSM is presented. The eddy current reaction field is taken into account as well as axial and circumferential segmentation of the magnets.

Findings

The analytical model provides results comparable to 3D-FEM calculations even at high frequencies at reduced computation costs. To generalize the results the magnetic Reynold’s number is introduced.

Originality/value

Taking into account the axial and circumferential segmentation in the PDE; the approach is much more accurate compared to known approaches; accuracy is comparable to 3D-FEA.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the possible portfolio diversification opportunities between Asian Islamic market and other regions’ Islamic markets; namely USA, Europe, and BRIC. This study makes the initial attempt to fill in the gaps of previous studies by focusing on the proxies of global Islamic markets to identify the correlations among those selected markets by employing the recent econometric methodologies such as multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic–dynamic conditional correlations (MGARCH–DCC), maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT), and the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). By utilizing the MGARCH-DCC, this chapter tries to identify the strength of the time-varying correlation among the markets. However, to see the time-scale-dependent nature of these mentioned correlations, the authors utilized CWT. For robustness, the authors have applied MODWT methodology as well. The findings tend to indicate that the Asian investors have better portfolio diversification opportunities with the US markets, followed by the European markets. BRIC markets do not offer any portfolio diversification benefits, which may be explained partly by the fact that the Asian markets cover partially the same countries of BRIC markets, namely India and China. Considering the time horizon dimension, the results narrow down the portfolio diversification opportunities only to the short-term investment horizons. The very short-run investors (up to eight days only) can benefit through portfolio diversification, especially in the US and European markets. The above-mentioned results have policy implications for the Asian Islamic investors (e.g., Portfolio Management and Strategic Investment Management).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose and analyze the free vibration response of the spatial curved beams with variable curvature, torsion and cross section, in which all the effects of rotary inertia, shear and axial deformations can be considered.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations for free vibration response of the spatial curved beams are derived in matrix formats, considering the variable curvature, torsion and cross section. Frobenius’ scheme and the dynamic stiffness method are applied to solve these equations. A computer program is coded in Mathematica according to the proposed method.

Findings

To assess the validity of the proposed solution, a convergence study is carried out on a cylindrical helical spring with a variable circular cross section, and a comparison is made with the finite element method (FEM) results in ABAQUS. Further, the present model is used for reciprocal spiral rods with variable circular cross section in different boundary conditions, and the comparison with FEM results shows that only a limited number of terms in the results provide a relatively accurate solution.

Originality/value

The numerical results show that only a limited number of terms are needed in series solutions and in the Taylor expansion series to ensure an accurate solution. In addition, with a simple modification, the present formulation is easy to extend to analyze a more complicated model by combining with finite element solutions or analyze the transient responses and stochastic responses of spatial curved beams by Laplace transformation or Fourier transformation.

Abstract

This paper presents an unstructured discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the solution of hyperbolic heat conduction problems that have found a wide range of applications in the pulsating laser treatment of thin films for electronic and MEMS applications. The mathematical formulation is described in detail and computational procedures are given. The computational algorithm is validated using the analytical solution for 1D thermal wave equations. Numerical simulations are made for 2D and 3D thermal wave propagations in regular and complex geometric configurations exposed to ultra‐short laser pulses. The stability of the algorithm is also studied using the matrix eigenvalue method and appropriate time step is determined for simulations. The numerical solutions exhibit strong wave behavior and reflection and interactions of thermal waves at the boundaries in multi‐dimensions. Simulations also show that the thermal wave behavior disappears and the classical Fourier heat conduction resumes when there is an instantaneous response between the heat flux and temperature gradient.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore gas/liquid two-phase flow is widely existed in industrial fields, especially in chemical engineering. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is considered to be one of the most promising techniques to monitor the transient flow process because of its advantages such as fast respond speed and cross-section imaging. However, maintaining high resolution in space together with low cost is still challenging for two-phase flow imaging because of the ill-conditioning of ERT inverse problem.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a sparse reconstruction (SR) method based on the learned dictionary has been proposed for ERT, to accurately monitor the transient flow process of gas/liquid two-phase flow in a pipeline. The high-level representation of the conductivity distributions for typical flow regimes can be extracted based on denoising the deep extreme learning machine (DDELM) model, which is used as prior information for dictionary learning.

Findings

The results from simulation and dynamic experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm efficiently improves the quality of reconstructed images as compared to some typical algorithms such as Landweber and SR-discrete fourier transformation/discrete cosine transformation. Furthermore, the SR-DDELM has also used to estimate the important parameters of the chemical process, a case in point is the volume flow rate. Therefore, the SR-DDELM is considered an ideal candidate for online monitor the gas/liquid two-phase flow.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills a novel approach to effectively monitor the gas/liquid two-phase flow in pipelines. One deep learning model and one adaptive dictionary are trained via the same prior conductivity, respectively. The model is used to extract high-level representation. The dictionary is used to represent the features of the flow process. SR and extraction of high-level representation are performed iteratively. The new method can obviously improve the monitoring accuracy and save calculation time.

Abstract

A new method of spectral analysis has been proposed for non‐stationary harmonic analysis of corrosion processes. The current of a model circuit has been considered which would simulate a first‐order electrode reaction proceeding in conditions of a linearly changing electrode potential with a superimposed sinusoid signal. It has been shown that the Fourier transformation approach does not reflect the amplitude changes of harmonic components as a function of constant potential. In addition, it has been shown mathematically that application of Gabor transformation in spectral analysis is a means of obtaining the correct frequency components. The Gabor transform correctly reflects amplitude changes of harmonic components as a function of potential. Digital analysis of current changes by Gabor transformation unequivocally confirmed the usability of this method for harmonic analysis of corrosion processes.

Abstract

Fourier methods used in two‐ and three‐dimensional image reconstruction can be used also in reconstructability analysis (RA). These methods maximize a variance‐type measure instead of information‐theoretic uncertainty, but the two measures are roughly collinear and the Fourier approach yields results close to that of standard RA. The Fourier method, however, does not require iterative calculations for models with loops. Moreover, the error in Fourier RA models can be assessed without actually generating the full probability distributions of the models; calculations scale with the size of the data rather than the state space. State‐based modeling using the Fourier approach is also readily implemented. Fourier methods may thus enhance the power of RA for data analysis and data mining.
