Abstract

Purpose

Film is an important recording medium in industry. How to ensure film quality is a problem, because the film is produced in a dark room. Aims to focus on this.

Design/methodology/approach

An inspection system based on machine vision is presented which could assure illumination and imaging at 940 nm which is safe for film.

Findings

An objective evaluation is given using an image processing method and satisfactory results are obtained. Now, the inspection system is used by the biggest film company in China.

Originality/value

This work focuses on an important issue in film production.

Abstract

Describes part of a wider evaluation exercise undertaken to assess the impact of the introduction of a picture‐archiving and communication system (PACS) on the adult intensive care unit (AICU) at the Royal Brompton NHS Trust in London. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the perceptions of PACS of the medical and ancillary staff working within AICU as well as to undertake a preliminary assessment of its impact on the workload of radiographers. Questionnaires, interviews and a process analysis were undertaken. The research findings indicate that the overall perception of staff towards the introduction of the PACS was positive. The impact of the system on the workload of radiographers was significant, reducing the time taken to obtain an image from 90 to 60 minutes. However, lessons to be learned for future PACS implementations include the need to ensure compatibility with existing IT systems, adequate IT support and initiatives to ensure that the benefits of PACS are communicated to the hospital at large.

Abstract

A comparative study on methods for cleaning copper‐clad boards with abrasive slurries is presented. A number of methods are analysed in detail; the conclusions indicate that brush scrubbing with abrasive slurries offers a wider processing window, whereas jet scrubbing is less ‘forgiving’ for the small/medium‐sized manufacturers where more handling of the material is necessary due to reduced automation. For the larger high volume manufacturers of printed circuit boards with higher levels of automation and tighter process control no significant yield differences were found.

Abstract

This paper examines visual representation in marketing communication from a distinctive, interdisciplinary perspective that draws on ethics, visual studies and critical race theory. An ontological approach is offered as an alternative to phenomenologically based approaches in marketing scholarship that use consumer responses to generate data. Suggests ways to clarify complex issues of representational ethics in marketing by applying a semiotically‐based analysis that places ontological identity at the center of societal marketing concerns. Analyzes representations of the exotic Other in disparate marketing campaigns, including advertising, tourist promotions and music, as examples of bad faith marketing strategy. Music is an important force in marketing communication, yet marketing studies have rarely considered music and its visual representations as data for inquiry. Feels that considering visual representation within marketing from an ontological standpoint contributes additional insight into societal marketing and places global marketing processes within the intersection of ethics, aesthetics and representation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider how film can induce image, both individually and collectively. In particular, the psychological drivers of film are explored and how these may impact on tourism visitation. The impacts of film and cinema are explored, as is the relationship between tourists' motivation and purchase behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors review the limited literature on the subject, seeking commonalities and resonances between film and tourism. A focus group is used to develop a perceptual map with which to better understand the phenomenon and a questionnaire was conducted to research attitudes towards film and propensity towards film‐induced behaviour.

Findings

The paper suggests that there are commonalities between film and tourism and that film can evoke powerful and long‐lasting images with the viewer, thus creating marketing opportunities for destination marketing organisations (DMOs).

Practical implications

With greater understanding of the nature and power of filmic image, it is hoped that tourism DMOs may develop more effective strategies for attracting visitors to destinations.

Originality/value

Research in this topic is very limited and, as far as the authors are aware, there is nothing which adopts an in‐depth approach on the nature and application of film‐induced tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

Kaiping Diaolou in Guangdong Province, China, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is often used as a film location. This study aims to investigate the antecedents of film-induced heritage conservation behaviour in tourists visiting Kaiping Diaolou. The conceptual premises of stimulus-organism-response theory were used to provide additional insight into the impact of film- and heritage-induced images, and tourists’ perceived authenticity, destination attachment and heritage conservation intention.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors tested the hypotheses using covariance-based structural equation modelling by using the data collected from the 391 valid questionnaires.

Findings

The empirical results reveal that both film- and heritage-induced images have a direct impact on tourists’ heritage conservation intention. Furthermore, perceived authenticity and destination attachment fully mediate the relationship between destination image and conservation intention, while the serial multiple mediator effect in the heritage destination image model is not significant.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the understanding of tourists’ heritage conservation intention through the lens of destination image, perceived authenticity and destination attachment. The study’s findings enrich the literature on film and heritage tourism regarding destination image construction and heritage conservation and have implications for the sustainable development of heritage tourism and heritage conservation, as well as the marketing of heritage sites.
