Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the evolvement of investors’ behavior in stock market dynamically on the basis of non-cooperative strategy applied by investors in complex networks.

Design/methodology/approach

Using modeling and simulation research method, this study designs and conducts a mathematical modeling and its simulation experiment of financial market behavior according to research’s basic norms of complex system theory and methods. Thus the authors acquire needed and credible experimental data.

Findings

The conclusions drawn in this paper are as follows. The dynamical evolution of investors’ trading behavior is not only affected by the stock market network structure, but also by the risk dominance degree of certain behavior. The dynamics equilibrium of trading behavior’s evolvement is directly influenced by the risk dominance degree of certain behavior, connectivity degree and the heterogeneity of the stock market networks.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focuses on the dynamical evolvement of investors’ behavior on the basis of the hypothesis that common investors prefer to mimic their network neighbors’ behavior through different analysis by the strategy of anti-coordination game in complex network. While the investors’ preference and the beliefs among them are not easy to quantify, that is deterministic or stochastic as the environment changes, and is heterogeneous definitely. Thus, these limitations should be broken through in the future research.

Originality/value

This paper aims to address the dynamical evolvement of investors’ behavior in stock market networks on the principle of non-cooperative represented by anti-coordination game in networks for the first time, considering that investors prefer to mimic their network neighbors’ behavior through different analysis by the strategy of differential choosing in every time step. The methodology designed and used in this study is a pioneering and exploratory experiment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the evolvement of the concept and practice of the Rotating Savings and Credit Association (ROSCA) from informal fund collection for indivisible durables to real property acquisition under the interest-free SBF model by analyzing the previously conducted research that focused on the concept in terms of names, forms, and natures.

Design/methodology/approach

A PRISMA-compliant systematic literature review is adopted to ascertain the most relevant studies from various sources and analyze the extracted data or items to accomplish the research objective. Besides, bibliometric network, thematic, and statistical analysis are also applied to bolster the findings acquired from the systematic review. Furthermore, this study mathematically formulates and introduces the customized PRISMA systematic flowchart.

Findings

The results reveal that the concept of ROSCA has evolved over the years from informal to formal, micro to macro, individual to institutional, social to business, and fund collection for purchasing household items to real property acquisition since 1962. In this process, the focus area of the research has been shifted from characteristics, operation, and economics to law; source of funds, and history to social; benefits and contribution to digital, risk, and savings behaviour. It is noticed that the majority of the study are Africa-centric, followed by Asia; academic discussion on the ROSCA covers most of the social and economic arena, except the real property acquisition aspect. However, the SBF concept fills up this gap by introducing a real-property-acquisition-centric ROSCA model. The authors provide future agendas regarding focus areas that researchers may consider to develop the SBF concept.

Originality/value

The study focuses on the evolvement of a savings-based model. No study concentrates on the evolution process of the model from ROSCA to SBF; in fact, no conspicuous academic study is found regarding the systematic review of ROSCA in the literature archive.

Abstract

Purpose

By the re‐interpretation of the Book of Changes (I Ching), this article aims to build a framework for analyzing the structure and the evolvement of leadership.

Design/methodology/approach

There are 64 hexagrams in Book of Changes. This article focuses the discussion on Qian hexagram, which is the first and the most important one in all the hexagrams. By using metaphysical concepts, this article builds a dynamic leadership system. This leadership system is composed of the four virtues of Qian (with the meaning of heaven, force), which are as follows: Yuan (creation and origination), Heng (cooperation and development), Li (achievement and sharing), and Zhen (firmness and perseverance). Based on this framework, by using the metaphor of dragon, this article develops an evolvement route of leadership according to the six situations set by the Qian hexagram, which are humble stage, emerging from hiding, trying your best, going up or down, reaching excellence, and starting to fall, and discusses the proper leadership in different situations.

Findings

There are four elements or virtues in leadership. The importance of each virtue and the key points in each of them change as an organization or a venture evolves from one situation to another. Leaders should match their leadership with the specific situation they are in.

Originality/value

According to the knowledge of the authors, this article is the first one in the world trying to set up a leadership system based on Book of Changes, especially Qian hexagram. The implications provided by this article would be very valuable for leaders to more successfully evaluate their situations and change their leaderships according the different challenges they may face.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to address workplace learning in terms of investigating school leadership development in an inter-professional team (the team) in which principals, administrators and researchers work together on a local school improvement project. The purpose is to provide an enriched understanding of how school leadership development evolves in a team during two years as the team works on different problem-spaces and the implications for leadership in schools.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a larger study with a qualitative research design with longitudinal, interventional, interactional and multiple-time level approaches. Empirically, the paper draws on tools, video and audio data from the teams’ work. By using cultural–historical activity theory (CHAT), school leadership development is examined as an object-oriented and tool-mediated activity. CHAT allows analyses of activities across timescales and workplaces. It examines leadership development by tracing objects in tool-mediated work and the ways in which they evolved. The object refers to what motivates and directs activity.

Findings

The findings suggest that the objects evolved both within and across episodes and the two-year trajectory of the team. Longitudinal trajectories of tools, schools and universities seem to intersect with episodes of leadership development. Some episodes seem to be conducive for changes in the principals’ schools during the collaboration.

Research limitations/implications

There is a need for a broader study that includes more cases in other contexts, thus expanding the existing knowledge.

Originality/value

By switching lenses of zooming, it has been possible to examine leadership development in a way that is not possible through surveys and interviews.

Abstract

Purpose

Talents are the critical resource of sustainable development for countries, and attracting talents all over the world is the important way for increasing the country's talent reverse. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to make the governments understand the evolving pattern of international talent mobility.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper constructs the networked model of talent mobility among 15 major countries during the years 1990–2012 under the database of the Patent Cooperation Treaty and analyzes the global characteristics and the evolvement of international mobility of talents under complex network perspective.

Findings

It is found that the mobility network is scale-free, which means that a few developed countries, such as the USA, England and France, have enjoyed considerable migratory flows of talents, but most of the other countries only have moderate levels of brain circulation. Besides a very few exceptions, a dynamic equilibrium is reached for most countries, with numbers of talents evening out between emigration and immigration. As time passes by, the volume of talent flows is gradually stabilized, with the numerical gap existing between developed countries and developing ones. Nowadays, the scale of international mobility of talents is growing at an unprecedented speed, facilitated by technological progress and more flexible migratory policies.

Originality/value

This paper sheds light on the evolving pattern of the international talent mobility using complex network analysis. The cogent quantitative analysis highlights the huge challenges faced by national governments and provides the basis for deliberative policy-making aimed at winning the brain war internationally.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine the evolvement of enterprise risk management (ERM) in Sweden. We examine how the Swedish legal and self-regulatory framework influences ERM development. We examine the impact of ERM research on practice, the professionalization of ERM facilitated by professional bodies and associations, and its promotion by the evolvement of principles and practices. This research is based on interviews with national experts 1 at the policy level as well as four field visits to large Swedish organizations in order to deepen our understanding of ERM integration with corporate governance, accounting, and disclosures. We find that: There is no obvious misalignment between the legal and self-regulatory framework and ERM practices in organizations; ERM is more integrated with disclosures than with governance and accounting practices; decentralized organizations experience more difficulty in integrating ERM compared to centralized organizations; no tensions were evident between compliance and business partnering in the four field visits, enabling ERM integration; regulation can be useful in promoting minimum standards for ERM integration. This study adds to our understanding of ERM integration and the role of unique governing contracts in linking profitability, growth and risk from an ERM perspective. It also deepens our understanding of ERM integration as a multidimensional construct.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the knowledge development and thematic evolvement in hospitality and tourism technology research, and to suggest potential directions for studies in hospitality and tourism research.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 440 technology articles published from 1990 to 2022 were retrieved from six top-tier journals. By using bibliometric analysis, 440 technology articles were analyzed to discover the proportion of technology research in the hospitality and tourism discipline, knowledge development, intellectual turning points and thematic evolvement of hospitality and tourism technology research.

Findings

The findings indicated that the proportion of technology research has continuously increased over the past three decades. The findings revealed the key intellectual turning points in technology research. The topical trends showed the popular topics of technology research for the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and from 2020. The thematic map analysis results described how the major themes in technology research have evolved and shifted.

Research limitations/implications

By synthesizing past three decades of hospitality and tourism technology research, this study provides an overview of how technology research has evolved in the context of hospitality and tourism and offers suggestions for future studies on technology.

Originality/value

To the best knowledge of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first bibliometric analysis focusing on technology research in the hospitality and tourism discipline, thereby providing a broad understanding of how technology research has developed in the discipline.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the historical evolvement of competing institutional logics (i.e. religion, profession, state, market and community) underpinning Islamic accounting standardisation projects and power relations between internal actors representing these logics.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts a case-study approach and analyses two Islamic accounting standardisation projects implemented at the national and international levels. Documentary review and semi-structured interviews are used for data collection. Analysis is informed by the “Institutional Logics Perspective” and Bourdieu's notion of “power as capital in a field”.

Findings

Research findings illustrate how some local actors pre-dispose themselves in promoting strict compliance to IFRS, while others endeavour to ensure compliance to “Islamic Sharia requirements” in financial reporting. In this power dynamic, there is an ongoing “constructive resistance” actively exerted by the latter group against the former, preserving the existence of religion-based reporting demands in Islamic accounting standardisation approaches. The paper also highlights chronological “dynamic” accounts that explain the evolvement of institutional logics prevailing in these projects over different historical stages at both national and international levels.

Originality/value

This paper's findings contrast and challenge the existing assumption that the “epistemic community” promoting IFRS agenda always faces “passive responses” from local actors. Moreover, the paper's offering of a dynamic view to institutional logic mapping extends the previously used “static analyses” of logics prevailing in Islamic accounting standardisation projects.

Abstract

Purpose

Interaction plays a significant role in robotics and it is considered in all levels of hardware and software control design. Several models have been introduced and developed for controlling robotic interaction. This study aims to address and analyze the state-of-the-art on robotic interaction control by which it is revealed that both practical and theoretical issues have to be faced when designing a controller.

Design/methodology/approach

In this review, a critical analysis of the control algorithms developed for robotic interaction tasks is presented. A hierarchical classification of distributed control levels from general aspects to specific control algorithms is also illustrated. Hence, two main control paradigms are discussed together with control approaches and architectures. The challenges of each control approach are discussed and the relevant solutions are presented.

Findings

This review presents an evolvement trend of interaction control theories and technologies over time. In addition, it highlights the pros and cons of each control approaches with addressing how the flaws of one control approach were compensated by emerging another control methods.

Originality/value

This review provides the robotic controller designers to select the right architecture and accordingly design the appropriate control algorithm for any given interactive task and with respect to the technology implemented in robotic manipulator.
