Abstract
Purpose
Previous research suggests that emotional intelligence (EI) may benefit managers when resolving conflicts. However, past studies relied on self-reports of EI and conflict management styles, and a theoretical model explaining the mechanisms of the link between EI and conflict management outcomes for managers is still missing. This study aims to test a theoretical model proposing that during conflicts, managers with higher performance-based ability EI are perceived as warmer and more competent, which in turn contributes to higher conflict management effectiveness.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 108 Executive MBA students with managerial experience completed a performance-based EI test designed for the workplace and engaged in a conflict management exercise during which they were videotaped. In the exercise, managers spontaneously responded to video-based vignettes in which “employees” addressed them regarding a work-related conflict (e.g. a disagreement regarding tasks and working hours). Independent observers (n = 262) rated the managers’ videotaped responses on items tapping warmth, competence and conflict management effectiveness.
Findings
Managers with higher performance-based EI (in particular, emotion regulation in oneself and emotion management in others) received higher observer ratings on warmth, competence and conflict management effectiveness. Warmth and competence fully mediated the link between EI and effectiveness.
Originality/value
These results demonstrate that managers’ performance-based EI translates into actual work-related behaviors and outcomes. Implications for training EI and effective conflict management are discussed.

Purpose
The negative effects of job stress and burnout on construction professionals (CPs) at the construction site have been widely concern in the construction industry. The purpose of this study is committed to explore the impact of job stress on CPs on the construction site, especially in the context of the widespread use of social media to express their emotions.
Design/methodology/approach
This study developed a job-related stress-burnout-health conditions-turnover intention (S-B-HT) framework to explore the direct and lagged effects of job stress, we also examined the moderating effects of online emotions, operationalized in terms of emotional intensity and expression pattern, on the relationship between job stress with job burnout under two evolution paths (i.e. health conditions or turnover intention). This study collected 271 samples through a survey questionnaire for empirical testing, and introduced structural equation models to validate the proposed conceptual model.
Findings
The results show that job stress has a significant positive effect on job burnout, and job burnout maintains a positive relationship with health conditions (or turnover intention) under the interference mechanism. Simultaneously, the online emotions expressed in social media have a positive moderating effect in two stages of the evolution path.
Practical implications
The findings of this study remind the project manager need to timely find and solve the job burnout characteristics of CPs due to excessive job stress, especially to prevent the accidental consequences caused by job burnout.
Originality/value
On this basis, this study provides an important value of using social media to express emotions for the project team to alleviate the adverse of professionals under job stress.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aimed to assess emotional intelligence (EI) among young adults across three Arab countries: Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
Design/methodology/approach
A total of 1884 university students participated from the three countries and completed the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT). Data were validated by confirmatory factor analysis using SPSS AMOS version 29. Path analysis, t-tests and analyses of variance were performed to understand the influence of background variables on the EI of the study participants.
Findings
The results provide theoretical support for the SSEIT and the hypothesized relationship between managing personal and others' emotions. Although significant differences were found between participants in terms of gender and grade point average (GPA), no difference was found between participants based on nationality. The results of this study indicate the need to prioritize EI in young adults and other implications.
Originality/value
The importance of EI in individuals' daily lives cannot be overemphasized. However, scholarly insights into the state of EI in the Arab context are scarce.

Purpose
Can managerial supplication lead subordinates to engage in undesirable work behavior? What role, if any, do negative emotions play in this process? Are there factors that moderate these emotions and their harmful implications? Relying on the affective events theory, the current study investigated these questions using a moderated mediation model in which: (a) perceived managerial supplication elicited sadness that resulted in counterproductive work behavior and (b) political skill and emotional intelligence moderated these relationships.
Design/methodology/approach
The moderated mediation model was tested using a sample of 167 employees. The data were collected in three waves.
Findings
Perceived managerial supplication was positively related to subordinates' sadness and both dimensions of counterproductive work behavior, namely, organizational and interpersonal counterproductive work behavior. Moreover, sadness was positively related to both dimensions of counterproductive work behavior and mediated the relationships between perceived supplication and these two undesirable outcomes. Nevertheless, contrary to our expectations, all moderation effects included in our model were insignificant.
Practical implications
Human resource departments should implement training programs to develop the awareness of their managers about the harmful consequences of perceived supplication, encouraging them to use other behaviors with subordinates.
Originality/value
This study is the first to (a) suggest and validate the view that subordinates' perceptions about their managers' use of supplication can result in undesirable work behavior and (b) demonstrate that sadness, an emotion that is not associated with the tendency to express external aggression, can lead employees to engage in counterproductive work behavior toward both their organizations and colleagues.

Abstract
Purpose
This study explores how emotional intelligence, customer orientation, deep acting and surface acting influence job satisfaction among middle managers in their interactions with customers, colleagues and business partners. By examining these factors, we aim to provide insights into their collective impact on job satisfaction and interpersonal dynamics within organizational contexts.
Design/methodology/approach
By involving 95 middle managers at Indonesian Internet service providers as respondents, this research used a questionnaire to collect data. Next, the data were analyzed using the partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique, which evaluated measurement models and structural models. A total of twelve hypotheses were tested in this study.
Findings
This study found that customer orientation does not have a significant effect on deep acting, thereby nullifying its indirect effect on job satisfaction. Conversely, it's demonstrated that both deep acting and surface acting serve as partial mediators in the relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction. Furthermore, surface acting emerges as a partial mediator in the connection between customer orientation and job satisfaction.
Originality/value
By exploring the relationship between customer orientation, emotional intelligence and job satisfaction among employees, this study seeks to reveal novel insights. The study examines the impact of these critical elements, which are necessary for middle managers to effectively manage their emotions and cultivate significant connections, on their overall job satisfaction and interpersonal dynamics in their diverse responsibilities.

Abstract
Purpose
Outside of teaching, little knowledge exists about the emotion work of pedagogical professionals, i.e., the emotion work that is performed in kindergartens, residential homes or school counseling. This study addresses this shortcoming by answering the questions (1) how is emotion work experienced and coped with in pedagogical professions? and (2) how does pedagogical professionals’ emotion work relate to burnout?
Design/methodology/approach
An exploratory sequential mixed methods approach consisting of an interview and a questionnaire was applied. First, n = 10 interviews were conducted to investigate how emotion work is experienced and managed by pedagogical professionals. Second, hypotheses regarding the relationship between identified resources and burnout were derived and empirically tested in a questionnaire survey with n = 97 participants.
Findings
The interviews provided insight into various emotional job demands and resources. Emotion work has been shown to be a key aspect of pedagogical work. Detached concern was identified as an emotion-regulating resource in coping with the resulting emotional job demands. The results of the quantitative phase revealed that pedagogical professionals’ detached concern plays a vital role in preventing burnout.
Originality/value
This study adds new insights to the understanding of emotion work performed in care work professions outside of teaching. The acknowledgement of pedagogical work, as skilled (emotion) work, and the investigation of resources is an important step in improving the working conditions of pedagogical professionals and thus protecting their health and well-being.

Abstract
Purpose
This research objective was to explore how Romanian IT family businesses' co-founders enable entrepreneuring through familiness practices. The authors explored what familiness practices emerge and how these are facilitated and supported by the rhetoric framework.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on Romanian IT entrepreneurs' practice from five case studies of IT family businesses and purposive revelatory cases, the authors considered the family co-founders' narratives and representations of familiness presented in 31 interviews.
Findings
The respondents' communication in entrepreneuring is a joint collaborative effort of the family co-founders to function well. Family entrepreneurs generate positive perceptions in favour of enterprising families using persuasive communication via rhetoric appeals to familiness ethos, familiness logos and familiness pathos, leading to constructive conflict management. The rhetoric of persuasion supports family entrepreneuring.
Research limitations/implications
The authors conducted multiple case studies, profiling technological co-founders and family entrepreneurs in the challenging circumstances of an emerging economy.
Practical implications
The analysis of the use of rhetoric contributes to a better understanding of familiness practices in the family business. Through appeals to ethos, family business entrepreneurs enforce family values built on shared history, complementarity and moral exemplarity. The appeals to logos in entrepreneuring involve fulfilling complementary roles, alignment and continuous learning and coaching. The appeals to pathos are about emotions and how the family entrepreneurs' discourse enforces constructive handling of emotions.
Social implications
The perceived familiness communicated through appeals to ethos, logos and pathos contributes to legitimating the family firm structures.
Originality/value
Theorising from family entrepreneurs' familiness practices, the authors suggest that entrepreneuring requires good communication of the representation of familiness for co-founders, employees and other stakeholders to also serve constructive conflict handling. The perceived familiness communicated through appeals to ethos, logos and pathos helps family businesses leverage their unique strengths and resources in the entrepreneuring process.

Abstract
Purpose
Given the scarcity of research exploring the influence of emotional dimensions on knowledge hiding (KH), this paper aims to examine how various facets of emotional intelligence (EI) affect teachers’ tendencies to hide knowledge. Additionally, the study delves into the mediating influence of organizational cynicism (OC) and explores the moderating role of servant leadership (SL) in this context.
Design/methodology/approach
The non-probability sampling method was used to gather data from 542 university teachers teaching in India. Structural equation modelling using Smart-PLS has been used to test the hypothesis.
Findings
The study revealed that EI negatively influences KH. Additionally, OC mediates the relationship between EI and KH. Furthermore, SL moderates the relationship between OC and KH.
Originality/value
As per the authors’ knowledge, the present study makes an additional contribution by investigating the mediating role of OC in the relationship between EI and KH. Moreover, it also investigates the moderating role of SL in the relationship between OC and KH.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper investigates how the engagement of a group of actors (the volunteers), previously unexplored in service ecosystems literature, contributes to generating new co-creation activities and well-being outcomes in the healthcare service ecosystem (HSE). Moreover, the study analyses how the provision and integration of volunteers’ resources help to explain the HSE self-adjustment favouring the re-humanisation of service.
Design/methodology/approach
The article zooms in on the volunteers’ activities in an HSE. A qualitative approach is adopted, and an empirical investigation is grounded in data gathered from Kids Kicking Cancer (KKC) Italia, a volunteer association operating in the paediatric oncology ward of Italian hospitals. Data are collected and triangulated through in-depth interviews, volunteers’ diaries and observations. The analysis is conducted by adopting an interpretative thematic analysis technique.
Findings
The study provides a conceptual framework explaining how volunteers’ value co-creation activities influence the HSE’s self-adjustment by leading to a re-humanisation of services. The paper also contributes to the state of knowledge by identifying seven categories of volunteers’ value co-creation activities, two of which are completely new in the literature (co-responsibility and empowerment).
Originality/value
The paper contributes to the service research literature by identifying empirically grounded value co-creation activities extending the understanding of self-adjustment and re-humanisation of the service ecosystem.

Utilising a longitudinal case study methodology, the research focusses on Turin’s Integrated Popular Financial Report (IPFR) as a lens through which to evaluate the broader implications of digital transformation on governmental transparency and operational efficiency.
Findings
Digital tools, notably sentiment analysis, offer promising avenues for enhancing governmental efficacy and citizenry participation. However, persistent challenges highlight the inadequacy of traditional, inflexible reporting structures to cater to dynamic informational demands.
Practical implications
Embracing digital tools is an imperative for contemporary public administrators, promoting streamlined communication and dismantling bureaucratic obstructions, all while catering to the evolving demands of an informed citizenry.
Originality/value
Different from previous studies that primarily emphasised technology’s role within budgeting, this research uniquely positions itself by spotlighting the transformative implications of digital tools during the reporting phase.
