Abstract

Purpose – Hybrid reality television, a burgeoning subgenre spawning from the reality television genre, distinguishes itself from its parent genre through dramatizations that have been described as presenting a “quasi-reality” that is disorientating for the viewer (Caramanica, 2010). In addition to blurring the lines between fact and fiction, hybrid reality programs blur the lines between product placement and entertainment as products are seamlessly blended into the depicted lifestyles. This research explores how consumers negotiate hybrid reality television programs and how this process transpires in viewers' reactions to the consumption portrayals within the programs.

Methodology/approach – Insights were sought from qualitative in-depth interviews with avid viewers of an archetype of the hybrid reality subgenre, the MTV program The Hills.

Findings – The findings reveal varying degrees of self-reflexive consciousness, reflecting viewers' critical awareness of the rhetoric of the program, the artifices of the hybrid reality genre, and their role as an audience. Self-reflexive consciousness facilitates a critical response toward the text in which viewers recognize the artifices of the genre and thus regard the program as “real” and “not real” and simultaneously worth and worthless viewing at the same time, in a textual strategy, we refer to as ironic (dis)engagement.

Originality/value of the chapter – On the basis of this body of data, a typology of viewer responses to hybrid reality programs emerges with corresponding consumption strategies as viewers negotiate the consumption portrayals within The Hills. These findings suggest that viewers embrace product placement within the subgenre and that the program has pioneered and opened up new horizons for lifestyle branding practices within television programming.

Abstract

This review shows the systematic and bibliometric review of 361 papers on the impact of corporate social responsibility on firm performance from 2013 to 2023. The aim of this review is to research the development trends of women’s financial inclusion and women’s financial literacy during this period. The outcomes show that the issue of women’s financial literacy and women’s financial inclusion is particularly highlighted by scholars since 2019, especially for 2021 and 2022. This review focusses on two aspects of analysis: publish performance and content. In terms of published performance analysis, the publication information of papers is analysed to understand the publication trends and author’s research trends in this decade, and bibliometric maps are generated using VOS-viewer software. The bibliometric map shows that India and the USA are in the middle of the map which shows that the authors from these two nations have strong correlations with other authors. For the content analysis, we used VOS-viewer software to analyse the content of the title and abstract, the outcomes reveal three main streams about financial literacy and financial inclusion for women, especially in rural regions in developing economics and the suggestions for policymakers and government. This review attempts to cover the systematic and bibliometric analysis by presenting findings through analysis of selected papers, which highlights some possible gaps and opportunities in the literature along with a scope of directions for future research.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused an unprecedented crisis in all industries. In the education sector, the pandemic led to the immediate closure of university and college campuses and the migration to online delivery in more than 190 countries in order to prevent the spread of the virus and mitigate its impact. The current study explores students’ perceptions of online accounting course delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Arab Emirates. Using an online survey, the findings show that student perceptions regarding online course delivery varied based on students’ years in the program. Specifically, underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores) reported greater enjoyment than upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) from studying classes online and were more likely than upperclassmen to extol the benefits of online learning such as the ability to view classes anytime, anywhere as well as the enhanced opportunity to utilize technology in learning. These differences may result from the familiarity of upperclassmen with the traditional learning format. The analysis also reports differences in perceptions of online learning between students of different ages and gender. The results from this research can help inform institutional policies by providing insight into students’ views on the efficacy and challenges associated with transitioning to a fully online learning environment in the midst of a major disruption of United Arab Emirates.

Abstract

Changes in the accounting profession predictably impact higher education, including the sudden, unexpected shift from working in an office to working remotely. The Covid-19 global pandemic forced our accounting department to pivot all courses to a remote teaching and learning environment, which represented a very turbulent environment for our faculty and students. Since we had no clarity regarding the extent or duration of this change, we decided to collect our experiences that semester to share the practices that we tried that worked well and to also capture the practices that did not work as well as anticipated. As a result, we were able to leverage our dynamic capabilities to work on continuous improvement in the areas of engagement and innovation to have a positive impact on our teaching and student learning.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to employ bibliometric analysis to condense multiple studies into a single publication that not only gives insights into the growth and advancement of the research area but also establishes a future research agenda. This study provides a summary of advances in academic research on money laundering. The research includes bibliometric analysis and visualisation of bibliographic data using the Scopus database. The results of the study show that there has been a significant increase in the number of publications in the field of money laundering research, with topics focussed on specific areas. This study will also benchmark existing and preliminary themes, designs, and methodological choices for future money laundering research.

Methodology: With the help of the ‘visualisation of similarities’ (VOS) viewer open-source software, bibliometric analysis was performed using Scopus data. Citation analysis, topic mapping, country collaboration, co-citation analysis, and keyword co-occurrence analysis are some of the approaches used in bibliometric analysis.

Findings: Based on a bibliometric analysis of 1,391 research papers retrieved from the Scopus database over the past three decades (1990–2021), the study identified the most prominent authors, studies, journals, affiliations, and countries in the field of money laundering, as well as the most co-cited authors and journals. The writers also highlight future study issues in the field of money laundering.

Practical implications: The study’s findings might provide academics and practitioners with information on the present state of money laundering research and trend subjects. It can also be used as a guideline for identifying possible research gaps in the existing literature.

Abstract

Introduction: The growing body of research on employee engagement (EE) has resulted in a new human resource management paradigm. Human resource management researchers are investigating how EE can help with employee retention in higher education.

Purpose: The purpose of this chapter was to determine the quantity, growth trend, global distribution, top journals and authors, dominant countries, and dominant subject areas in EE in the higher education sector.

Methodology: The researcher employed a bibliometric analysis technique using VOS viewer software on one of the worldwide used databases, Scopus. Four combinations of the words were combined in this work using the logical operators TITLE-ABS-KEY (‘Employee engagement’ AND ‘Higher education’ OR ‘Higher educational institutions’ OR ‘universities’), thereby broadening the scope. This bibliometric analysis analysed 139 documents on EE scholarship.

Findings/Practical Implications: EE in higher education is still a developing phenomenon; this review aims to educate and inform contemporary researchers by providing an overview of the field’s current state.

Abstract

Learning to teach in ways that are academically, linguistically and culturally responsive to diverse learners in today’s schools is a complex and challenging endeavor for novice and experienced teachers. In recent years, educators in schools and universities have been collaborating to create more powerful ways for prospective and practicing teachers to explore and develop what some call “best practice” in teaching and learning (Zemelman, Daniels & Hyde, 1993, 1998). Meanwhile, the advent of new technologies has provided exciting opportunities to invent innovative ways to document, explore and enhance our understanding of teaching as a professional practice. Many educators have written about the rich potential of hypermedia to document the everyday work in which teachers engage – curriculum development, planning, teaching, assessment and reflection – in ways that preserve the highly contextualized and situated nature of teaching practice (Lacey & Merseth, 1993; Lampert & Ball, 1998; Spiro & Jehng, 1990). Video clips of classroom teaching and artifacts associated with it (e.g. student work, the teacher’s reflections, planning documents, district curriculum) can be accessed by computer in flexible, non-linear ways. Moreover, the use of hypermedia materials affords opportunities for novice and experienced teachers to engage together in taking an inquiring stance to investigate practice and to generate new understandings and insights that can inform future practices (Lampert & Ball, 1999). Lacey and Merseth (1993) argued that hypermedia is a curricular innovation that addresses “three currently held beliefs about teaching and learning to teach: namely, that teaching is complex and context-dependent; that engaging in the construction of knowledge about teaching is a powerful way to learn it; and that learning to teach can be greatly enhanced by participation in a community of inquiry” (p. 547).

Abstract

Due to its contribution to poverty reduction, which is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, inclusive finance is an issue of discussion. By using a bibliometric analysis approach, this study conducts performance analysis and keyword co-occurrences analysis under VOS viewer to synthesize the characteristics and essential dimensions of financial inclusion in Asia. This research studies 1,072 articles contributed by 1,928 authors, during the years 2005–2022. Numerous figures and networks are provided in order to comprehend publication trends, influential authors and their affiliations and countries, influential publications, and keyword occurrences. Six clusters were discovered, and financial inclusion is in the same cluster as financial literacy and financial service. This research will provide valuable insights for governments, regional authorities, and academic researchers, enabling them to enhance their comprehension of Asian financial inclusion and identify prospective avenues for future research. Ahead of this research, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of financial inclusion in Asian countries has not been conducted, as far as the authors’ knowledge goes. The study offers a comprehensive overview of financial inclusion in Asia and reveals insights into the field’s crucial messages. Future researchers can use this knowledge to obtain a deeper understanding of the field.

Abstract

In the 1988 film The Accused, a young woman named Sarah Tobias is gang raped on a pinball machine by three men while a crowded bar watches. The rapists cut a deal with the prosecutor. Sarah's outrage at the deal convinces the assistant district attorney to prosecute members of the crowd that cheered on and encouraged the rape. This film shows how Sarah Tobias, a woman with little means and less experience, intuits that according to the law rape victims are incredible witnesses to their own victimization. The film goes on to critique what the “right” kind of witness would be. The Accused, therefore, is also about the relationship between witnessing and testimony, between seeing and the representation of that which was seen. It is about the power and responsibility of being a witness in law – one who sees and credibly attests to the truth of their vision – as it is also about what it means to bear witness to film – what can we know from watching movies.
