Abstract
Purpose
The authors propose a blockchain platform for managing clinical trial data to enhance data validity, integrity, trust and transparency in the pharmaceutical research process. The authors also provide an extensive review of how blockchain technology supports the business processes of clinical trials.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic literature review was conducted to identify the existing applications of blockchain in pharmaceutical process management. A conceptual design for a blockchain infrastructure to address clinical trial challenges is developed by outlining the entire clinical trial value chain and identifying the coordination and communication among its stakeholders. A stakeholder analysis is conducted to ensure that the clinical trial processes satisfy the requirements and preferences of each stakeholder.
Findings
The proposed blockchain platform offers a promising solution for enhancing integrity, trust and transparency in the clinical trial process. Additionally, blockchain can help streamline communication and collaboration between stakeholders by enabling multiple parties to access and share data in real time, lowering the possibility of delays or errors in data analysis and reporting.
Practical implications
The proposed blockchain platform can benefit patients by empowering them to have better-controlled access to their data and by allowing researchers to maintain adherence to reporting requirements. Additionally, the platform can benefit granting agencies, researchers and decision-makers by ensuring the integrity of clinical trial data and streamlining communication and collaboration between stakeholders.
Originality/value
This study builds on existing blockchain applications in pharmaceutical process management by developing a blockchain framework that can address clinical trial concerns from an integrated perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
“Buy X Get X Free” promotions are popular across retail settings. Retailers promote a variety of products using this promotional frame. However, past research contains mixed findings about the effectiveness of this promotion compared to the straightforward discount on a single unit of a product. The goal of this research is to employ a theoretical lens to examine the effectiveness of “Buy X Get X Free” promotions.
Design/methodology/approach
The theoretical framework was tested in two experiments using different products and samples. The data collected from each experiment were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential techniques to assess support for the theoretical arguments.
Findings
Findings reveal that at identical levels of per-unit discount, the “Buy X Get X Free” promotion is perceived less favorably by consumers than a straightforward single-unit discount. Consumers perceive lower transaction value and acquisition value and, thereby, a lower purchase intention, from the “Buy X Get X Free” promotion compared to a single-unit discount.
Practical implications
This research was conducted keeping in mind the popularity of the “Buy X Get X Free” promotion in the real world. The findings caution retailers against indiscriminately using this promotional frame.
Originality/value
Using a theoretical lens, this research proposes and validates a framework to systematically examine consumers' perceptions of the two popular discount frames. The proposed theoretical framework provides a richer understanding of the underlying consumer psychology that drives the evaluation of these promotions. Further, primary data from lab experiments validates the framework. The research also helps advance the understanding of consumer evaluation of sales promotions in general.

Abstract
Purpose
Mindfulness is gaining popularity in the business world as a way to improve mental health and productivity in employees. However, the application of mindfulness for employees in the hospitality sector is still in its nascent stage. This paper aims to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of mindfulness practice on employees in this high-pressure service industry.
Design/methodology/approach
This narrative review identifies and integrates insights from journal articles researching mindfulness in the hospitality industry. Synthesis and reflective description of the literature reveal an exigent need for practice, policy-making and future research.
Findings
This review paper describes mindfulness-based interventions used in the literature. It shows how the practice of mindfulness stimulates a culture of well-being and effectiveness at work, consequently having a positive impact on the customer and the organization. It points to the role of mindfulness in helping hospitality employees deal with stress, depression, anxiety, burnout and emotional labor peculiar to this industry, lowering absenteeism levels and turnover intention.
Practical implications
This paper has implications for hospitality managerial practice, human resource (HR) policy development, employees at all levels in the hospitality industry, business coaches/trainers, educationists, students pursuing hospitality management and researchers.
Originality/value
This first review article on mindfulness in the hospitality industry lays the foundation to accentuate the need and benefits of prioritizing mindfulness in this sector. It provides directions for future research, application in HR management in hospitality and designing effective interventions.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a service quality framework that enhances service delivery in clinical laboratories by gauging medical practitioner satisfaction and by providing avenues for continuous improvement.
Design/methodology/approach
The case study method has been used for conducting the exploratory study, with focus on the Mauritian public clinical laboratory. A structured questionnaire based on the SERVQUAL service quality model was used for data collection, analysis and for the development of the service quality framework.
Findings
The study confirms the pertinence of the following service quality dimensions within the context of clinical laboratories: tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, turnaround time, technology, test reports, communication and laboratory staff attitude and behaviour.
Practical implications
The service quality framework developed, termed LabSERV, is vital for clinical laboratories in the search for improving service delivery to medical practitioners.
Originality/value
This is a pioneering work carried out in the clinical laboratory sector in Mauritius. Medical practitioner expectations and perceptions have been simultaneously considered to generate a novel service quality framework for clinical laboratories.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to establish a methodology for the design and development of patient-specific elbow implant with an elastic modulus close to that of the human bone. One of the most preferred implant material is titanium alloy which is about 8 to 9 times higher in strength than that of the human bone and is the closest than other metallic biomedical materials.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology begins with the design of the implant from patient-specific computed tomography information and incorporates the manufacturing of the implant via a novel rapid prototyping assisted microwave sintering process.
Findings
The elastic modulus and the flexural strength of the implant were observed to be comparable to that of human elbow bones. The fatigue test depicts that the implant survives the one million cycles under physiological loading conditions. Other mechanical properties such as impact energy absorption, hardness and life cycle tests were also evaluated. The implant surface promotes human cell growth and adhesion and does not cause any adverse or undesired effects i.e. no cytotoxicity.
Practical implications
Stress shielding, and therefore, aseptic loosening of the implant shall be avoided. In the event of any trauma post-implantation, the implant would not hurt the patient.
Originality/value
The present study describes a methodology for the first time to be able to obtain the strength required for the medical implant without sacrificing the fatigue life requirement.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the optimum design of bending plate compliant mechanisms subjected to pure mechanical excitations using topological-derivative-based topology optimization. The main objective is to design the reinforcement in a plate of base material.
Design/methodology/approach
The optimum design is performed by means of a level-set representation method guided by topological derivatives. Kirchhoff and Reissner–Mindlin models are used to solve the linear bending plate problem. A qualitative comparison has been carried out between the optimal obtained topologies for each model.
Findings
The proposed methodology was able to design reinforcement in a plate of the base material. The obtained reinforcements notably improve the device’s behavior. The shape and topology of the reinforcements vary depending on the mechanical plate model considered. In fact, in the Reissner–Mindlin solutions, very thin flexo-torsional hinges connecting big zones of the reinforcement material are designed.
Originality/value
Up to date, the synthesis of ortho-planar mechanisms by means of continuum topology optimization was only boarded within a multi-physics context. In this work, the optimal design of pure ortho-planar compliance actuators is addressed. The best performance is found by analyzing the results for two classical mechanical plate models.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to follow up on the structural and fatigue analysis of car wheel rims with carbon fibre composites in order to ensure the vehicular safety. The wheel is an essential element of the vehicle suspension system that supports the static and dynamic loads encountered during its motion. The rim provides a firm base to hold the tire and supports the wheel, and it is also one of the load-bearing elements in the entire automobile as the car's weight and occupants' weight act upon it. The wheel rim should be strong enough to withstand the load with such a background, ensuring vehicle safety, comfort and performance. The dimensions, shape, structure and material of the rim are crucial factors for studying vehicle handling characteristics that demand automobile designers' concern.
Design/methodology/approach
In the present study, solid models of three different wheel rims, namely, R-1, R-2 and R-3, designed for three different cars, are modelled in SOLIDWORKS. Different carbon composite materials of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), namely, PEEK 90 HMF 40, PEEK 450 CA 30, PEEK 450 GL 40 and carbon fibre reinforced polymer-unidirectional (CFRP-UD) are used as rim materials for conducting the structural and fatigue analysis using ANSYS Workbench.
Findings
The results thus obtained in the analyses are used to identify the better carbon fibre composite material for the wheel rim such that it gives better structural properties and less fatigue. The R-3 model rim has shown better structural properties and less fatigue with PEEK 90 HMF 40 material.
Originality/value
The carbon composite materials used in this study have shown promissory results that can be used as an alternative for aluminium, steel and other regular materials.

Abstract
Purpose
This research focuses on suggesting an optimized model for selecting best employees using advanced multi-criteria decision making method to a supply chain firm, who is planning to start a new cold chain business vertical.
Design/methodology/approach
Study has been conducted in a supply chain firm in North India, who wants to expand its business with the help of efficient team members. In total 38 applicants were considered for the study, as selected by the firm after initial screening from pool of talent. AHP-LP and TOPSIS-LP integrated approach were applied separately for evaluation and implementation of personnel selection model. Further, both the approaches were compared to find the best fit and optimized model.
Findings
As per the findings, both AHP and TOPSIS can be used to select the best candidate among the alternatives available. TOPSIS was found easier to implement as it involves ranking of applicants with respect to each skills required for respective job profile only once, whereas AHP involves pair-wise comparison among candidates with respect to each skills required for respective job profile and normalization of each comparison, resulting in the formation of number of comparison matrices. However, AHP is more reliable as it considers consistency check for each level of pair-wise comparison. Hence, there is a chance to avoid or revise the human judgment error. Integrated ranking and optimization approach minimizes the cost by suggesting the relevant positions to be filed to make an efficient team.
Research limitations/implications
Group of interviewers are involved in the decision-making process, hence there are chances of biasness in ranking method which can influence the group decision. Research is limited to a particular geography of North India therefore needs to be tested for other regions also in order to generalize. The research will help the third party logistics (3PL) and other related firms in efficient team selection.
Originality/value
The researcher focuses on formalizing a method for potential candidate selection by considering the constraints of the organization. It has been observed that limited researches have been done on the application of AHP-LP or TOPSIS-LP integrated approach for selection process. Hence, this research proposes two integrated ranking-optimization method and suggests the best fit by comparing both the approaches.
