Abstract

Marketing orientation refers to a culture in which organizations strive to create superior value for their customers (and superior performance for the business) by focusing on customer needs and long-term profitability. Some studies have found that firms with a high degree of marketing orientation experience improved performance; others have found mixed or nonsignificant results. The marketing orientation of small businesses has not been thoroughly investigated, however. This study of more than 200 small business CEOs examines the marketing orientation levels of small to medium-sized firms (SMEs) as well as the impact of various internal variables (sales/profit performance, company characteristics, and CEO characteristics) on marketing orientation levels. The results confirm some earlier research on marketing orientation and provide new insights into this important strategic dimension.

Abstract

Internet marketing is a field which is continuing to grow, and the online auction concept may be defining a totally new and unique distribution alternative. Very few studies have examined auction sellers and their Internet marketing strategies. This research examines the Internet auction phenomenon as it relates to the marketing mix of online auction sellers. The data in this study indicate that, while there is great diversity among businesses that utilize online auctions, distinct cost leadership and differentiation marketing strategies are both evident. These two approaches are further distinguished in terms of the Internet usage strategies employed by each group.

Abstract

Marketing orientation can be described as a culture in which organizations strive to create superior value for their customers (and superior performance for the business) by focusing on customer needs and long‐term profitability. Some studies have found that firms with a high degree of marketing orientation experience improved performance; othershave found mixed or non‐significant results. While all firms are strongly influenced by their external environment, small to medium sized firms (SMEs) may be even more influenced by their own internal culture. The smaller firms are less bureaucratic and more a reflection of their own specific leadership and internal circumstances. The marketing orientation of these firms may in part be determined by such factors as the scope of the business or the managerial style of the president. This study examines the market orientation of SMEs relative to several characteristics of the organization and the managerial style and background of the company president. In addition, marketing orientation is examined relative to company performance in terms of both change in sales and change in profits. The results of this study confirm some earlier research on marketing orientation and provide some new insights and questions on this important strategic dimension.

Abstract

Private label brands may be in danger as a result of recent changes in the marketing strategies used by private label firms. The primary competitive advantage of private label brands, good quality at low prices, may be lost if private label firms continue to modify and expand how their brands are marketed. Specifically, changes in private label brands′ advertising, packaging, sales promotion, and product improvement strategies indicate that private label brands are moving closer than ever to manufacturer brand status. To the extent that these changes result in higher average retail prices and/or lower gross margins for retailers, the advantages of private brands to both consumers and distributors will diminish, illustrating that the historical “wheel of retailing” hypothesis may be applicable to private label brands. Investigates the aforementioned trends and provides suggestions for manufacturers and retailers for future brand management strategies.

This article is premised on the idea that social networks represent an important, but often overlooked, unit of analysis in management and entrepreneurship studies. The concept of embeddedness, emphasizing the significance of social relationships, is of particular relevance as more and more frequently minorities and immigrants engage in small businessownership. This article borrows from the ethnicity and social network traditions, and offers that an analysis of the ethnic homogeneity of an entrepreneur's strong and weak social ties would be fruitful in gauging entrepreneurial success.

Abstract

Purpose

Global issues on the environment, such as climate change, air pollution and carbon monoxide emission, are the primary concerns in any part of the world. The purpose of this paper is to construct a conceptual framework for the travel behavior performance of a commuter, and it is expected to mitigate air pollution from vehicle emission and to promote smart mobility on the road.

Design/methodology/approach

From the extensive literature review, the conceptual framework for the travel behavior performance of a commuter has been developed and is supported by the theory of interpersonal behavior (TIB), whose functions are attitude, social factor, affect and habit. In the present paper, attitude is conceptualized by four predictors, namely confidence in driving, green environment, social responsibility and deviation in driving. The social factor is characterized by subjective norms, social status and digitalization. Affect factor is conceptualized by accidents and damages, road infrastructure, and weather conditions. The mental block in following the ancestor’s way of owning a personal vehicle is the predictor for the habit.

Findings

One of the major contributors to environmental damages is road traffic. Notably, vehicle emissions are on the rise every year due to the increase of reliance on vehicles, and there is no alternative to this issue. Although Malaysia has a well-organized infrastructure with effective digitalized technology on the road for the transport system, there is severe traffic congestion in Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur, because of a lack of travel plan behavior during peak hours. If the road commuters give the predictors constructed in the proposed conceptual framework the highest importance, then there will be much relief to traffic congestion on the road.

Research limitations/implications

Since the present study focuses on the conceptualization of an urban travel behavior model (UTBM), and also highlights the synchronization of the proposed framework with the management theory, the results are expected after the primary survey based on the cross-sectional study will be conducted.

Originality/value

The identification of the suitable predictors for the UTBM toward the travel behavior performance of a commuter is the real novelty of the present study. Also, the cause and effect relationships of different predictors in terms of path directions of the proposed research framework are the highlights of the study. Further, the predictors in the proposed framework and the TIB have been synchronized with operational definitions, which are the original contributions of the present study, which will enhance the sustainable environmental development for the society as a whole.

When I was young my grandmother used to tell me stories, her stories. These stories have now become my own and have been visually represented to share with a wider audience. Using the medium of a digital video installation, the viewer will be invited to partake in a space that presents these stories and at the same time create a unique storytelling environment. It will be possible to participate in a nonlinear visual experience that allows the viewer to be both listener and teller of stories. This paper presents the processes and background to the formulation of the project, incorporating the themes of memory, narrative and identity. By utilising the narrative inquiry research methodology, I have been able to combine the project and research in a symbiotic way. The method of narrative inquiry allows for a personal account of the research and by its very nature, being concerned with narrative discourse, is at the core of this project. The paper is presented with accompanying video footage from the installation to illustrate the major themes of the research.
