Abstract

Purpose

With the time and increase in usage of information technology (IT), blockchain technology is gaining immense attention from researchers, academicians, and practitioners because of its distinctive features such as transference, security and data reliability. The purpose of this study is to endow with a systematic review of literature on blockchain in context to the government education sector in terms of its usage, benefits, obstacles and practical implementation in future areas in education.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a bibliometric visualization tool to classify data in yearly publications, highly cited journals, prominent authors, leading publications in countries and institutions and highly cited papers – the data was extracted from the SCOPUS database by using relevant keywords. Thus, the following research questions were developed: How has blockchain technology been used in the government educational sector? What are the benefits examined in the field of education? What were the problems/obstacles faced using the technology in a government education structure?

Findings

The findings identify and provide a comprehensive review of the technique regarding the present research stream in terms of highest publication, author, journal, subject-wise and relevance of the technology in government education structure. Thus, the future research potential of the technology in the education sector is much more as it is in the initiation stage. A lot of opportunities and benefits need to be extracted at large.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the pattern of publications, using a bibliometric analysis, of the African Journal of Library, Archives and Information Science (AJLAIS) for the period between 2000 and 2012.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses appropriate measures and techniques of bibliometric analysis. Keeping the objectives of the study in mind, the data were collected from the AJLAIS covering the 13 identified years. The analysis covers mainly the number of articles published per volume in each of the specified years, the authorship patterns, the subject areas covered, the length of articles, the citation pattern of articles and the article types.

Findings

The results of the study reveal that a total of 218 articles were published in the 13-year period, with 21 (9.63 per cent) articles being the highest total in the year 2002. The study showed that the majority of the articles, i.e. 126 (57.8 per cent), were published by single authors, out of which, a large number were on information retrieval. Of the total number of articles published, 86 (39.4 per cent) were 6-10 pages in length. Volume 19 in 2009 had the highest number of citations with a total of 451 (12.4 per cent). In addition, the study revealed that the majority of the articles were theoretical papers, with a total of 108 (49.5 per cent), while the others were empirical papers, book reviews and short communications.

Practical implications

This bibliometric study will enlarge the knowledge base of information professionals on the present condition of library and information science (LIS) research in the current African context and provide some basis for future projections of the discipline. The study will also be helpful for librarians in the process of collection development. This is because, due to increased journal costs and slim budgets for libraries, collection development specialists must make careful selections based on the qualities and standards of journals.

Originality/value

Researchers who shy away from this particular type of research owing to its rigorous and time-consuming nature should gather the courage to do so. Further studies should focus on analysing journals that are published in the field of librarianship in Africa, as it will create more awareness of the field of study among other professionals or researchers who are yet to know about it. The study has also revealed AJLAIS as one of the LIS standard journals in terms of its wider citation by contributors in the broader LIS literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a method to carry out technological foresight exercises in university technological research and development centers (TRDCs). The results support the organizational planning process.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors review the literature on the frameworks of foresight. The authors propose the use of quantitative (bibliometrics) and qualitative (expert meeting, Delphi) techniques. The authors apply this method to each research topic of interest of the TRDCs.

Findings

The application of the method to a research topic allows us to analyze the relevant knowledge areas for the development of that topic and its global trend. For each area, the authors identify the specific lines of research with the greatest growth and relevance. Considering these lines, the authors make a diagnosis of the TRDC situation regarding how to provide knowledge to decision-makers.

Research limitations/implications

The paper reviews the results of the application in the Engineering Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and in the research topic “Seismic risks in civil engineering.” It is necessary to adjust the application of the method in other TRDCs to the conditions of the organization and to the development achieved by the TRDCs in the analyzed research topic.

Originality/value

There is no detailed literature on technological foresight exercises in university TRDCs that support the planning process of the organization. The method represents a proposal to establish priority research topics and specific research lines in research institutes, particularly universities. The authors present the application in a university TRDCs in Mexico.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the review of the existing literature attached to the grey economic system theory and applications and aims to offer a comprehensive picture of the contribution brought by the researchers to this particular field. Also, the paper underlines the main research areas within the grey economic theory and applications and serves as an informative summary kit for future research works and research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

For appreciating the scientific progress made since the grey systems theory has been initiated to the present, with an accent on the literature dedicated to the economic field, a bibliometrics analysis has been conducted. The Perish or Publish software was used for extracting the needed data from Google Scholar for the entire period since the appearance of grey systems to now-a-days. In addition, an ISI Web of Science (WoS) search has been performed for extracting the grey economic papers. As the main focus is on the economic subject area of the grey systems, only the papers related to this field have been selected.

Findings

The total number of grey economic paper from both Google Scholar and ISI WoS database, the number of authors, some citation metrics, H-index, authors’ provenience country, papers’ language, etc., have been presented and analysed. Also, a list with the most cited papers in the grey economic relational analysis, grey economic prediction models and grey economic incidence is putted forward.

Practical implications

Through the bibliometric analysis on grey economic papers written over time, a qualitative analysis was performed on this field in order to underline the main research direction, to analyse what has been done in this field and to determine which can be the next research directions that can emerge from here.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in enlarging the view regarding the usage of grey systems theory in the economic field, offering a suitable analysis on the considered areas. Even though bibliometrics analysis have been conducted on the grey systems theory field, a grey economic bibliometric analysis has not been done yet, to the authors’ knowledge. Therefore, a synthesized of the existing literature attached to the grey economic system theory and applications is presented in order to offer a more comprehensive picture of the contribution brought by the researchers to this particular field.
