Abstract
Purpose
While extant literature explores the influence of institutions on the national innovation system (NIS), most research has either focused on specific institutional aspects or treated institutions as a unified entity. This study aims to examine the effect of various institutional factors on a country’s NIS.
Design/methodology/approach
The conceptual model was empirically validated using regression analysis. The study sample comprised a total of 84 countries.
Findings
This study identifies and empirically validates a comprehensive set of institutional factors. It also highlights the significant institutional factors (including political stability, government effectiveness, ease of resolving insolvency and the rule of law) that can help improve a country’s NIS.
Originality/value
The research provides practical implications for organizations and policymakers seeking to understand and foster an innovative culture within the NIS. Policymakers are encouraged to develop a nurturing environment within the NIS by focusing on significant institutional factors. Organizations are encouraged to closely monitor developments in the NIS of a country to make informed strategic decisions at the business, corporate and international levels.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the effect of Muslim consumers’ religiosity on their brand verdict regarding clothing brands, through the mediating role of decision-making style, brand status and brand attitude.
Design/methodology/approach
Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data collected from 200 clothing buyers in Mashhad, one of Iran’s religious cities.
Findings
The results indicate that intrapersonal religiosity, compared to interpersonal religiosity, has a more significant effect on Muslim consumers’ decision-making styles, and different decision-making styles of Muslim consumers affect their brand verdict through brand status and brand attitude.
Research limitations/implications
The research sample consists solely of respondents from the Islamic religion. Therefore, the impact of religiosity might differ among individuals from other religions, such as Christianity and Judaism.
Practical implications
This study’s findings are crucial for clothing brands, both national and international, that cater to the Muslim customers’ market. They need to consider the degree of religiosity when segmenting and targeting their market. This study shows that clothing brand marketers can best influence the brand verdict of Muslim consumers by targeting those with a brand-loyal decision-making style, focusing on their religious beliefs.
Originality/value
To achieve success in Iran’s Muslim market, marketers must consider their consumers’ religious beliefs and tailor their marketing plans accordingly. This study aims to investigate the impact of religiosity on consumer behavior toward brands in Iran’s Muslim market.

Abstract
Purpose
The data economy, emerging from the current hyper-technological landscape, is a global digital ecosystem where data is gathered, organized and exchanged to create economic value. This paper aims to shed light on the interplay of the different topics involved in the data economy, as found in the literature. The study research provides a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities, challenges and implications of the data economy for businesses, governments, individuals and society at large, while investigating its impact on business value creation, knowledge and digital business transformation.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conducted a literature review that generated a conceptual map of the data economy by analyzing a corpus of research papers through a combination of machine learning algorithms, text mining techniques and a qualitative research approach.
Findings
The study findings revealed eight topics that collectively represent the essential features of data economy in the current literature, namely (1) Data Security, (2) Technology Enablers, (3) Business Implications, (4) Social Implications, (5) Political Framework, (6) Legal Enablers, (7) Privacy Concerns and (8) Data Marketplace. The study resulting model may help researchers and practitioners to develop the concept of data economy in a structured way and provide a subset of specific areas that require further research exploration.
Practical implications
Practically, this paper offers managers and marketers valuable insights to comprehend how to manage the opportunities deriving from a constantly changing competitive arena whose value is today also generated by the data economy.
Social implications
Socially, the authors also reveal insights explaining how the data economy features may be exploited to build a better society.
Originality/value
This is the first paper exploring the data economy opportunity for business value creation from a critical perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
This research designed, optimized and tested a context-specific scale to evaluate public sector employees' pension choices.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors developed the scale using a comprehensive process of interviews and focus groups with experts across academia and finance. The authors used the refined scale to collect data from 564 faculty members in public sector universities following a multistage systematic cluster sampling technique. The findings revealed diversity in choice across different socio-economic and demographic variables.
Findings
The results revealed that items related to the defined benefit pension system explain most of the data variance and are preferred widely. This is followed by a preference for monetizing pension benefits and a defined contribution system. These findings indicated the need for flexible pension plans.
Practical implications
Therefore, the progressive movement towards monetization and the shift from defined benefit to a defined contribution pension system due to economic pressures must be accurately calculated and introduced where it is suitable.
Originality/value
Although the theory of introducing a defined contribution pension system and monetization system is appealing, its practical implementation may not be encouraging for all employees.

Abstract
Purpose
The sustainable development of the platform economy has been hindered by the absence and alienation of platform corporate social responsibility. Previous studies have mainly focused on the contents and governance models for platform corporate social responsibility. This study seeks to explore which strategy participants choose in the governance of platform corporate social responsibility and their influencing factors.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a platform ecosystem approach, a quadrilateral evolutionary game model was developed, and the stabilities of subjects’ behavioral strategies and their combinations in various scenarios were analyzed. Additionally, the effects of key parameters on the system’s evolutionary path were simulated.
Findings
The ideal steady state system is achieved when platform enterprises, complementors and consumers adopt positive strategies while the government adopts lax regulation. Moreover, the evolutionary strategies of the subjects are influenced by several factors, including the participation costs of governance, the rewards and punishments imposed by platform enterprises, as well as the reputational losses of platform enterprises and complementors due to media coverage.
Practical implications
This study offers insights into improving the governance effectiveness of platform corporate social responsibility for managers and practitioners.
Originality/value
This study contributes to existing literature by considering the rational orientation of platform ecosystem members and revealing the interaction mechanisms among members. Furthermore, this study combines collective action theory and reputation theory to clarify the influencing factors on members’ behaviors.

Abstract
Purpose
The present study investigates the relationship between high-performance work systems (HPWS) and employee flourishing-at-work (FAW) through psychological capital (PsyCap) and employee work passion (EWP).
Design/methodology/approach
A three-path serial mediation model was constructed to explore the proposed relationships. The hypotheses were empirically tested using SPSS 25 and AMOS 21.0. The study was conducted in India and included a total of 357 hotel employees as participants.
Findings
The study revealed that PsyCap and EWP were significant independent mediators between HPWS and FAW. Moreover, PsyCap and EWP were identified as serial mediators in the relationship between HPWS and FAW. Additionally, a direct relationship between HPWS and FAW was also found.
Practical implications
Implementing HPWS in hospitality organizations can foster PsyCap of the employees and foster EWP among their workforce. This approach not only increases the organization's competitive advantage but also enhances employees' holistic well-being, i.e. FAW.
Originality/value
This study marks a pioneering effort to establish a distinct relationship between HPWS and FAW. Moreover, the study introduces an innovative approach by employing EWP to delve into the influence of both HPWS and PsyCap on FAW.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore and analyze the issues in weightages-based profit distribution mechanism in Islamic banks from Shari’ah, practical and regulatory perspectives.
Design/methodology/approach
A qualitative research approach was used in this study based on primary data collected through semi-structured interviews from Shari’ah practitioners and senior industry experts in the field of pool management in the Islamic Financial Services Industry of Pakistan.
Findings
The current study found that the weightages-based mechanism conforms to the rules of Mudarabah and; therefore, permissible. However, the elements of exploitation, transparency and fairness require further research, as these elements seem to exist in this mechanism. It was also found that there are many loopholes in the regulatory guidelines for pool management in Islamic banking institutions (IBIs) in Pakistan resulting in practical issues.
Practical implications
The findings of this study may help improve pool management in IBIs, which in turn may cater the objections raised by academicians, customers and industry experts. Moreover, the alternative solution based on the findings of this study can be transformed into a proposal for regulators to take necessary actions against unfair profit distribution and issue further improved guidelines for IBIs in Pakistan.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, very limited studies have been conducted on pool management particularly with issues from different perspectives and alternative solutions have been suggested that may act as a proposal for IBIs as well as regulatory authorities.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to illustrate an emerging typology that theoretically links work values with personal values and to provide evidence of construct validity for this typology.
Design/methodology/approach
A hypothesis was developed that four types of work values – intrinsic, extrinsic, prestige and affective – underlie the relative importance that individuals place on aspects of work. Evidence of construct validity was provided using triangulation analysis. Data from three different samples in Japan were analysed with three different techniques; exploratory factor analysis (N = 229), hierarchical cluster analysis (N = 244) and smallest space analysis (N = 203).
Findings
The results demonstrate acceptable internal consistency and a coherent structure that fits the theoretical model across methods and samples. These findings lend strong support to the use of the intrinsic, extrinsic, affective and prestige typology for studying work values. This will hopefully encourage field scholars to adopt the typology in future values-based explorations in the context of work.
Originality/value
The study adds to the emergent literature in business research that stresses the importance of triangulation analysis to enhance the reliability and validity of findings. In this sense, it is an innovative paradigm of a multiple triangulation approach, which combines both data and within-method triangulation. The methods employed covered – for the first time – all commonly applied techniques for exploring the structure underlying the data and provided inductive, deductive and spatial evidence to corroborate the observed structure of work values.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to identify the psychological factors predicting sociopreneurial intention (SEI) and gain insight into the conversion of SEI to sociopreneurial behaviour (SEB) in the presence of facilitating events (FE) as a moderating factor.
Design/methodology/approach
Hypotheses are statistically tested using a partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) based on purposive survey data (n = 110) from the leaders of dairy cooperatives in Indonesia. The measurement items are specifically developed for this research after thoroughly analysing the questionnaire items provided by prior studies.
Findings
The findings support the hypotheses that empathy (EM), perceived social responsibility (PSR) and self-efficacy (SEFF) are strong predictors of SEI. Moreover, although SEI can be directly converted to SEB, FE significantly moderated that conversion.
Research limitations/implications
Future research should also involve the impact of SEB on the community and the sociopreneurs.
Originality/value
This research empirically examines the influence of external factors in converting SEI into SEB, which prior studies overlooked. Moreover, it involves the leaders of dairy cooperatives in Indonesia who perform SEB to help smallholder farmers’ communities facing dairy farming issues such as capital, milk productivity, land size and others as research participants.
