Abstract

Purpose

Many existing trajectory optimization algorithms use parameters like maximum velocity or acceleration to formulate constraints. Due to the ignoring of the quadrotor actual tracking capability, the generated trajectories may not be suitable for tracking control. The purpose of this paper is to design an online adjustment algorithm to improve the overall quadrotor trajectory tracking performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors propose a reference trajectory resampling layer (RTRL) to dynamically adjust the reference signals according to the current tracking status and future tracking risks. First, the authors design a risk-aware tracking monitor that uses the Frenét tracking errors and the curvature and torsion of the reference trajectory to evaluate tracking risks. Then, the authors propose an online adjusting algorithm by using the time scaling method.

Findings

The proposed RTRL is shown to be effective in improving the quadrotor trajectory tracking accuracy by both simulation and experiment results.

Originality/value

Infeasible reference trajectories may cause serious accidents for autonomous quadrotors. The results of this paper can improve the safety of autonomous quadrotor in application.

Abstract

Purpose

Although windy weather conditions have a significant effect on the flight safety and stability of any aircraft, the fact that quadrotors are lighter than other aircraft makes them more sensitive to the wind. This study aims to examine the extent to which quadrotors and their sensors, which are used in many fields and whose use is expected to increase significantly in the future, are affected by wind.

Design/methodology/approach

Flight experiments were carried out on different routes assigned by using Pixhawk Holybro 4 and Radiolink flight controllers. In these flight experiments, quadrotors were exposed to winds at different speeds and directions.

Findings

In the flight experiments, the deviation amounts in the quadrotor’s route at which wind speed was determined, and it was seen that these deviations were very serious and affected the safe flight at high wind speeds. According to the sensor information obtained from both different quadrotors’ flight experiments at different wind speeds, it was determined that the wind decreased the sensors’ accuracy.

Practical implications

It is foreseen that the data obtained in this study will be a source to be used in the design of quadrotors to be used in public areas in the future and to take the wind into account for safe flight.

Originality/value

In this study, numerous flight tests were carried out experimentally at various speeds from low speeds to high speeds on different routes using different flight controllers. The deviation data on the obtained routes and the effect of the wind on the sensors are experienced in real atmospheric conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is crucial for determining the positions of quadrotors, enabling safe flight and maintaining stability against environmental conditions. This study aims to investigate the effect of wind on the GPS of quadrotors experimentally.

Design/methodology/approach

This experimental study was conducted using an F450 frame, 980 kV motors and a Pixhawk flight controller to manage the quadrotor’s flight. To investigate the effects of wind on the quadrotor’s GPS during flight, a Pixhawk 4 Holybro flight controller was used. The experimental tests were performed on a predetermined route at different wind speeds.

Findings

Analysis of the data obtained from the flight tests showed that GPS signals were more affected as the wind speed increased. The percentage of GPS jamming levels reached 18% at high wind speeds.

Practical implications

Positioning services will be even more critical for quadrotors, which are expected to be used more frequently in public areas. This study is expected to be a reference for GPS-related research.

Originality/value

Winds pose a significant threat to the safe flight of quadrotors in many ways. This study experimentally investigates the effects of wind on the GPSs of quadrotors and to what extent it affects them at different wind speeds under real weather conditions. The obtained data shows that wind has a significant impact on GPS jamming.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the characteristics and modeling of the variable pitch quadrotor. In a variable pitch quadrotor, unlike ordinary quadrotors that the force is generated by the rotors, the speed of the rotors is constant, and the force is generated by varying the pitch angle of blades.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a sliding mode controller and an adaptive sliding mode controller are used to control the variable pitch quadrotor to have better performance.

Findings

The variable pitch mechanism has a wider control bandwidth, and it is able to produce a negative thrust that facilitates trajectory tracking and aggressive maneuvers. The simulation results indicate high performance of the proposed control scheme in presence of disturbance and changes in mass of the quadrotor.

Originality/value

The performance of the controllers for the variable pitch quadrotor is investigated through computer simulation with MATLAB software.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to optimize autonomous performance (i.e. both longitudinal and lateral) and endurance of the quadrotor type aerial vehicle simultaneously depending on the autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight.

Design/methodology/approach

Quadrotor design processes are critical to performance. Unmanned aerial vehicle durability is an important performance parameter. One of the factors affecting durability is the battery. Battery weight, energy capacity and discharge rate are important design parameters of the battery. In this study, proper autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight are obtained by using a stochastic optimization method named as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). Because there is no direct correlation between battery weight and battery energy density, artificial neural network (ANN) is benefited to obtain battery energy density corresponding to resulted battery weight found from SPSA algorithm. By using the SPSA algorithm optimum performance index is obtained, then obtained data is used for longitudinal and lateral autonomous flight simulations.

Findings

With SPSA, the best proportional integrator and derivative (PID) coefficients and battery weight, energy efficiency and endurance were obtained in case of morphing.

Research limitations/implications

It takes a long time to find the most suitable battery values depending on quadrotor endurance. However, this situation can be overcome with the proposed SPSA.

Practical implications

It is very useful to determine quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method.

Social implications

Determining quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method provides advantages in terms of time, cost and practicality.

Originality/value

The proposed method improves quadrotor endurance. In addition, with the SPSA optimization method and ANN, the parameters required for endurance will be obtained faster and more securely. In addition, the energy density according to the battery weight also contributes to the clean environment and energy efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new approach for robust control of an autonomous quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in automatic take-off, hovering and landing mission and also to improve the stabilizing performance of the quadrotor with inherent time-varying disturbance.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the dynamic model of the aerial vehicle is mathematically formulated. Then, a combination of a nonlinear backstepping scheme with the intelligent fuzzy system as a new key idea to generate a robust controller is designed for the stabilization and altitude tracking of the vehicle. For the problem of determining the backstepping control parameters, a new heuristic algorithm, namely, Gravitational Search Algorithm has been used.

Findings

The control law design utilizes the backstepping control methodology that uses Lyapunov function which can guarantee the stability of the nominal model system, whereas the intelligent system is used as a compensator to attenuate the effects caused by external disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control scheme can achieve favorable control performances for automatic take-off, hovering and landing mission of quadrotor UAV even in the presence of unknown perturbations.

Originality/value

This paper propose a new robust control design approach which incorporates the backstepping control with fuzzy system for quadrotor UAV with inherent time-varying disturbance. The originality of this work relies on the technique to compensate the disturbances acting on the quadrotor UAV. In this new approach, the fuzzy system is introduced as an auxiliary control effort to compensate the effect of disturbances. Because the proposed control technique has the capability of robustness against disturbance, thus, it is also suitable to be applied for a broad class of uncertain nonlinear systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain values that stabilize the lateral and longitudinal flight of the quadrotor for which the morphing amount and the best Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) coefficients are determined by using the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) optimization algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

Quadrotor consists of body and arms; there are propellers at the ends of the arms to take off and rotors that rotate them. By reducing the angle between mechanism 1 and the rotors with the horizontal plane, the angle between mechanism 2 and the arms, the rotors rise and different configurations are obtained. Conventional multi-rotor aircraft has a fixed fuselage and does not need a tail rotor to change course as helicopters do. The translational and rotational movements are provided by the rotation of the rotors of the aircraft at different speeds by creating moments about the geometric center in 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) space. These commands sent from the ground are provided by the flight control board in the aircraft. The longitudinal and lateral flight stability and properties of different configurations evaluated by dynamic analysis and simulations in 6 DOF spaces are investigated. An algorithm and PID controller are being developed using SPSA to achieve in-flight position and attitude control of an active deformable aircraft. The results are compared with the results of the literature review and the results of the previous article.

Findings

With SPSA, the best PID coefficients were obtained in case of morphing.

Research limitations/implications

The effects of quadrotor arm height and hub angle changes affect flight stability. With the SPSA optimization method presented in this study, the attitude is quickly stabilized.

Practical implications

With the optimization method, the most suitable PID coefficients and angle values for the lateral and longitudinal flight stability of the quadrotor are obtained.

Social implications

The transition rate and PID coefficients are determined by using the optimization method, which is advantageous in terms of cost and practicality.

Originality/value

With the proposed method, the aircraft can change shape to adapt to different environments, and the parameters required for more stable flight for each situation will be calculated, and this will be obtained more quickly and safely with the SPSA optimization method.

Abstract

Purpose

Calibration and 6-DOF test of a unique inertial measurement unit (IMU) using a Quadrotor aircraft. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the above issue.

Design/methodology/approach

An IMU with the special capability of measuring the angular acceleration was developed and tested. A Quadrotor aircraft is used as 6-DOF test platform. Kinematics modeling of the Quadrotor was used in the determination of the Euler angles, while Dynamics modeling aided in the design the closed loop controller. For safety, the flight test was performed on a 6-DOF constrained reduced-gravity test stand.

Findings

The developed IMU is suitable for measuring states and its time derivatives of mini UAVs. Not only that but also a simple control algorithm can be integrated in the same processing unit (a 32 microcontroller in this case).

Originality/value

The tested IMU as well as the safety constrained test techniques are unique.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a new vision-based approach for both the identification and the estimation of the relative distance between the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and power pylon. Autonomous power line inspection using small UAVs, has been the focus of many research works over the past couple of decades. Automatic detection of power pylons is a primary requirement to achieve such autonomous systems. It is still a challenging task due to the complex geometry and cluttered background of these structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The identification solution proposed, avoids the complexity of classic object recognition techniques. Instead of searching the whole image for the pylon template, low-level geometric priors with robust colour attributes are combined to remove the pylon background. The depth estimation, on the other hand, is based on a new concept which exploits the ego-motion of the inspection UAV to estimate its distance from the pylon using just a monocular camera.

Findings

An algorithm is tested on a quadrotor UAV, using different kinds of metallic power pylons. Both simulation and real-world experiments, conducted in different backgrounds and illumination conditions, show very promising results.

Research limitations/implications

In the real tests carried out, the Inertial Navigation System (INS) of the vehicle was used to estimate its ego-motion. A more reliable solution should be considered for longer distances, by either fusing INS and global positioning system data or using visual navigation techniques such as visual odometry.

Originality/value

A simple yet efficient solution is proposed that allows the UAV to reliably identify the pylon, with still a low processing cost. Considering a monocular solution is a major advantage, given the limited payload and processing power of such small vehicles.
