Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop and validate a scale for Islamic conception of psychological nature of man. Al-Ghazali’s model of psychological nature of man considered as the theoretical background of the study.

Design/methodology/approach

Content validity test and factor analysis are used to refine measurement items and define and validate the scale. In total, 362 samples were collected from Islamic banking practitioners in UAE.

Findings

Item statements are refined through content validation test. Three dimensions are extracted, i.e. “Intellect,” “Satanic element” “Divine Knowledge,” through exploratory factor analysis and evidence of validation of scale/construct is reported through confirmatory factor analysis.

Research limitations/implications

As a caveat, it is critical to emphasize that Al-Ghazali’s model is based on religion (Islam). It should be noted that the scope of the theoretical aspects of the study is limited to the beliefs based on the Islamic tradition.

Practical implications

It is believed that the scope of the developed and validated measurement scale is broad as the nature of the scale is universal and can be applied in any kind of organization in which the study requires capturing Islamic religious aspects with special reference to understanding the psychological nature of individuals associated with the organization and better understanding of their decision-making pattern.

Social implications

Understanding or examining the psychological nature of human beings is always been an interesting area to study as they are the pillars of the society. Required policies can be formulated or adjusted according to the empirical evidence indicated in the study in respective field of the society.

Originality/value

To the best of author’s knowledge, this is an initial attempt that developed and validated a scale based on the Islamic philosophy, with focus on psychological nature man. Further, the application of the methodology used in the study supports the statistical robustness to the findings, which is relatively rigorous and novel approach in the area of study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the adequacy of International Mine Action Standards 09.20 (IMAS 09.20) and the used standards ISO 2859 in the context of demining.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors show how the actual quality level acceptable quality limit (AQL) significantly affects the average total quality cost for one lot with a single sampling plan and, consequently, the average total quality cost, and as AQL increases, the cost of rejecting a lot and the cost of sampling increase.

Findings

The sampling plans for demining are not always optimal given economical and other concerns and that other mechanisms should be considered.

Practical implications

Addressing opportunity costs for adopting wide samplings plans instead of clearing uncleared land per default, as well as balancing producer and consumer consequences seems, therefore, to be highly relevant from a socio-economical perspective.

Originality/value

The general understanding of quality management and the systems involved are limited within the mine action sector. IMAS and most national mine action standards provide only a fairly narrow description of the issue. This implies that the field is missing opportunities to achieve efficiency and effectiveness, as well as to learn from and improve upon past experiences. The authors demonstrate herein that sampling provides little additional confidence as to whether a particular area is free from explosive hazards and substantial savings can be made compared to the current practice.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a synthesized conceptual model for ethical decision-making in marketing that accommodates both humanistic and religious aspects.

Design/methodology/approach

A religious–humanistic approach is adopted on synthesizing. “Ferrell and Gresham’s (1985) contingency framework for ethical decision-making in marketing” and “Al-Ghazali’s ethical philosophy” are considered to be the theoretical base for the synthesized model.

Findings

Al-Ghazali’s ethical philosophy that stands for the religious dimension in this study was found appropriate for incorporating into the Ferrell and Gresham contingency framework for ethical decision-making in marketing. The approach (religious-humanistic) adopted for synthesizing the two aspects into one model was justified accordingly.

Research limitations/implications

A newly synthesized model is only conceptually validated. Statistical validity is required based on the variables included in the conceptual model. Future studies are recommended to attain the model fit.

Practical implications

The scale and model developed in the study should help the marketing-department authorities to assess and evaluate ethical aspects of existing individuals in the organization and potential candidates under the selection stage for employment. The research output derived by way of using the newly synthesized conceptual model should be able to pave the way for more in-depth research on actual ethical practices of “marketing practitioners” in the organization. To some extent, understanding of ethical standing of employees should help in improving efficiency and reduce costs from unethical behaviour. This should be able to improve governance from the top- to the lower-level management.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no literature has conceptualized a model that accommodates both materialistic and religious aspects into a single model to explain ethical decision-making of individuals in organizations. This is an initial and a humble attempt to conceptualize a model that incorporates ethical philosophy in Islam, with special reference to Al-Ghazali’s ethical philosophy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the single sampling attribute plan for given acceptance quality level (AQL) and limiting quality level (LQL) involving minimum sum of risks using weighted Poisson distribution.

Design/methodology/approach

For the given AQL and LQL, sum of producer's and consumer's risks have been attained. Based on weighted Poisson distribution, the sum of these risks has been arrived at, along with the acceptance number and the rejection number. Also, the operating characteristic function for the single sampling attribute sampling plan, using weighted Poisson distribution, has been derived.

Findings

In the final inspection, the producer and the consumer represent the same party. So, the sum these two risks should be minimized. In this paper, the sum of risks has been tabulated using weighted Poisson distribution for different operating ratios. These tabulated values are comparatively less than the sum of risks derived using Poisson distribution.

Originality/value

The sampling plan presented in this paper is particularly useful for testing the quality of finished products in shop floor situations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the tendencies of liquid consumption in Muslim communities and analyse its impact on Muslims’ consumption practices from the holistic perspective. Liquid consumption refers to a transient and less-materialised mode of consumption that requires both minimal attachment to possessions and hybrid ownership.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a conceptual paper that is based on the distinction between Islam as a holistic perspective and Islamic practice as it is applied in different contexts and situations. The Continual Drift Adjustment (CDA) framework of Muslim consumers’ behaviour is developed to be deployed as an analysis framework.

Findings

The CDA framework maintains that some problematic cases of Muslim consumption behaviours indicate the drift towards disbalance. Depending on their nature, liquid consumption practices can have different impacts on the drift. Liquid consumption practices underscored by instrumental dissemblance, intellectual insecurity and spiritual scepticism intensify the drift, whereas the incorporation of spiritual sincerity, faithful submission and existential gratefulness into practices and behaviour helps to attenuate the drift.

Research limitations/implications

This research contributes to the theory of liquid consumption by incorporating the religious perspective. Liquid consumption in Islam is a complex area of research, specifically considering the ambivalent meanings of liquidity in Islamic thought.

Practical implications

Marketers of liquid consumption solutions must be aware of these offerings’ double-edged impact on the well-being of Muslim communities. Muslim consumers should be guided towards spiritual sincerity, faithful submission and existential gratefulness in the best way possible, although it must be noted that the customary techniques of marketing would lean towards stimulating the disbalance.

Originality/value

This research is unique because it deals with a topic that has not been researched in the Islamic marketing discipline to this date.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to investigate the differences in designing the zero acceptance number single sampling plans using the apparent fraction of nonconforming and the binomial distribution against the exact convolute compound hypergeometric distribution when both types of inspection errors are present.

Design/methodology/approach

This research presents the derivation and uses the numerical study to compare the calculated probability of acceptance and the minimum sample size when using the present design concept of binomial distribution with true fraction of nonconforming replaced with the apparent one. Under the presences of inspection errors and zero acceptance number, the probability of acceptance is alternatively derived and presented in term of a function of the probability generating function. This research uses numerical method to determine the differences in the probability of acceptance. The computation of the minimum sample sizes are presented along with the numerical results and the comparison.

Findings

When the inspection errors are present, the probability of acceptance is extremely decreased even for 1 percent of inspection errors of Type I (rejecting good product) and Type II (accepting bad product). The binomial apparent nonconforming notions yields an over‐estimation of the probability of acceptance, comparing with the exact convolute compound hypergeometric notion under the zero acceptance single sampling plans especially at low fraction of nonconforming levels, the six sigma quality levels. The differences of the calculated probabilities of acceptance and the minimum sample sizes decrease as the inspection error of Type II increases given a fixed value of Type I error and consumer risk.

Originality/value

This research alternatively presents the mathematical derivation along with numerical study to assert the over‐estimation of the probability of acceptance and the minimum sample size if the existing methodology to design the zero acceptance number single sampling plans is used. This finding will help improve the sampling design strategy of the multistage production system.

A procedure for designing chain sampling plans, ChSP‐1, is described for situations where one of the parameters, the sample size, is fixed. The procedure involves minimisation of the sum of the producer′s risk and consumer′s risk with due weights. Expressions have been derived under binomial and Poisson models, for the parameter i , using which one can obtain the plan for desired values of AQL/LQL weights and sample size. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new mixed repetitive group sampling (RGS) plan based on the process capability index, Cpk, where the quality characteristics of interest follow the normal distribution with unknown mean and unknown variance. Tables are constructed to determine the optimal parameters for practical applications for both symmetric and asymmetric fraction non-conforming cases. The advantages of this proposed mixed sampling plan are also discussed. The proposed sampling plan is also compared with other existing sampling plans.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to determine the optimal parameters of the proposed mixed RGS plan based on Cpk, the authors constructed tables for various combinations of acceptable and limiting quality levels (LQLs). For constructing tables, the authors followed the approach of two points on the operating characteristic (OC) curve. The optimal problem is formulated as a non-linear programming where the objective function to be minimized is the average sample number (ASN) and the constraints are related to lot acceptance probabilities at acceptable quality level and LQL under the OC curve.

Findings

The proposed mixed RGS plan will be a new addition to the literature of acceptance sampling. It is shown that the proposed mixed plan involves minimum ASN with desired protection to both producers and consumers compared to other existing sampling plans. The practical application of the proposed mixed sampling plan is also explained with an illustrative real-time example.

Originality/value
