Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study insulin pump therapy and accurate monitoring of glucose levels in diabetic patients, which are current research trends in diabetology. Both problems have a wide margin for improvement and promising applications in the control of parameters and levels involved.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have registered data for the levels of glucose in diabetic patients throughout a day with a temporal resolution of 5 minutes, the amount and time of insulin administered and time of ingestion. The estimated quantity of carbohydrates is also monitored. A mathematical model for Type 1 patients was fitted piecewise to these data and the evolution of the parameters was analyzed.

Findings

They have found that the parameters for the model change abruptly throughout a day for the same patient, but this set of parameters account with precision for the evolution of the glucose levels in the test patients. This fitting technique could be used to personalize treatments for specific patients and predict the glucose-level variations in terms of hours or even shorter periods of time. This way more effective insulin pump therapies could be developed.

Originality/value

The proposed model could allow for the development of improved schedules on insulin pump therapies.

Abstract

Purpose

The inhibition effect of Foeniculum vulgare seeds’ (FVS) extract on the corrosion of mild steel in acidic medium was studied using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel polarization, as well as the surface morphology of the mild steel.

Design/methodology/approach

Weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy analysis of FVS extract were performed.

Findings

FVS extract acts as a good inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl. The inhibition efficiency increases with the increase in inhibitor concentration but decreases with the increase of temperature.

Practical implications

FVS extract was observed to play an important role in the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in acidic solution.

Originality/value

This paper is intended to be added to the family of green inhibitors which are highly efficient inhibitors and can be used in the area of corrosion prevention and control.

Abstract

Purpose

To evaluate the effect of natural rosemary oil as non toxic inhibitor on the corrosion of steel in H3PO4 media at various temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

The oil was hydro‐distilled. The oil was used as inhibitor in various corrosion tests. Gravimetric and electrochemical techniques were used to characterise the corrosion mechanism.

Findings

Chromatographic analysis by GC showed that the oil was rich in 1,8‐cineole. The oil was a good inhibitor. But, its efficiency decreased with temperature.

Research limitations/implications

The inhibition efficiency increased with the concentration of the natural oil to attain 73 per cent at 10 g/l. Good agreement between the various methods explored was observed. Polarisation measurements showed that rosemary oil acted essentially as a cathodic inhibitor.

Practical implications

The efficiency of the oil increased with the concentration but decreased with the rise of temperature in the 298‐348 K range. The natural oil could thus be used in chemical cleaning and pickling processes.

Originality/value

The originality of this work is the finding of a safe and cheap inhibitor from natural plants.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper proposes a privacy-preserving artificial intelligence-enabled video surveillance technology to monitor social distancing in public spaces.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper proposes a new Responsible Artificial Intelligence Implementation Framework to guide the proposed solution's design and development. It defines responsible artificial intelligence criteria that the solution needs to meet and provides checklists to enforce the criteria throughout the process. To preserve data privacy, the proposed system incorporates a federated learning approach to allow computation performed on edge devices to limit sensitive and identifiable data movement and eliminate the dependency of cloud computing at a central server.

Findings

The proposed system is evaluated through a case study of monitoring social distancing at an airport. The results discuss how the system can fully address the case study's requirements in terms of its reliability, its usefulness when deployed to the airport's cameras, and its compliance with responsible artificial intelligence.

Originality/value

The paper makes three contributions. First, it proposes a real-time social distancing breach detection system on edge that extends from a combination of cutting-edge people detection and tracking algorithms to achieve robust performance. Second, it proposes a design approach to develop responsible artificial intelligence in video surveillance contexts. Third, it presents results and discussion from a comprehensive evaluation in the context of a case study at an airport to demonstrate the proposed system's robust performance and practical usefulness.

Abstract

Purpose

N-containing heterocyclic benzotriazole derivatives as new corrosion inhibitor for mild steel contained in emulsion were synthesized, and their inhibition behaviors for mild steel (MS) contained in emulsion were investigated by experiments and theoretical calculations, and this study aims to prove that two new inhibitors have excellent inhibition efficiency for steel corrosion.

Design/methodology/approach

2-(1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-yl)-N,N-dioctylacetamide (BTN) and O-(3-(1H-benzo[d] [1,2,3]triazol-1-yl)propyl) S-(2-(dioctylamino)-2-oxoethyl) carbonodithioate (BTSC) as a new corrosion inhibitor were synthesized, and their inhibition behaviors for MS contained in emulsion were investigated by gravimetric experiment, electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations.

Findings

Results of gravimetric experiment, electrochemical tests show that BTSC exhibit excellent inhibition performance, and it has a higher inhibition efficiency of 96.6% than that BTN. The resultant adsorption films from BTN/BTSC adsorbed on MS, effectively inhibiting the corrosion of MS is mainly through chemisorption and follow to Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm.

Originality/value

Experimental and theoretical calculations display that two new synthesized inhibitors are excellent corrosion inhibitor for MS contained in emulsion. Electrons of inhibitors mainly focus on the C, N, S and O atoms, which demonstrate these atoms are the centers of negative charge, and they supply electrons to Fe atoms through coordination bonds.

Abstract

The influence of addition of the natural material, jojoba oil, on the corrosion of iron in molar hydrochloric acid had been studied using weight loss measurement and electrochemical polarisation methods. It was found that the corrosion rate was significantly reduced in the presence of jojoba. It was also found that the corrosion inhibition efficiency increased with the concentration of the jojoba oil to attain a 100 per cent inhibition at 0.515 g/l of jojoba oil, indicating that jojoba oil was an excellent corrosion inhibitor. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of iron indicated that the inhibition efficiency of jojoba oil decreased very slightly with the rise of temperature. It was found that the adsorption of jojoba oil on the iron, which followed the Frumkin isotherm, was the main cause to the corrosion inhibition.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to evaluate the effect of natural menthols and their synthesised epoxy‐allylmenthols as a non‐toxic inhibitor on the corrosion of steel in HCl media at various temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

Epoxy‐allylmenthols were synthesised and characterised. Gravimetric technique was used to measure the efficiency of corrosion inhibition.

Findings

Modified allylmenthol (to epoxy‐allylmenthol) exhibited a good inhibition. But its efficiency decreases with temperature.

Research limitations/implications

The inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration of inhibitor to attain 74 percent at 0.8 g/l.

Practical implications

The efficiency of menthol derivatives increases with the concentration but decreases with rise of temperature in the 303‐328 K range. Natural inhibitor can be used in chemical cleaning and pickling processes.

Originality/value

The originality of this work is to find a safe and cheap eco‐friendly inhibitor from natural plants.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper was to investigate the corrosion inhibition potential of two synthesized benzothiazines, namely, 3,4-dihydro-2-methoxycarbonylmethyl-3-oxo-2H-1,4-benzothiazine (1) and ethyl 3-oxo-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzothiazine-2-carboxylate (2) on mild steel corrosion in 1M H2SO4.

Design/methodology/approach

Corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE%) was studied by weight loss measurements, potentiodyanmic polarization method, alternating current (AC) impedance spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Quantum chemical approach was used to complement the experimental results.

Findings

The results obtained show that the IE% increased with inhibitor concentration and follow the order 2 > 1, obeying Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The calculated quantum chemical indices were consistent with experimental results.

Originality/value

This paper provides information on the inhibitive properties of new set of benzothiazines on mild steel corrosion in 1M H2SO4.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to make people aware of organic corrosion inhibitors.

Design/methodology/approach

As it is a literature review paper, no specific method is used.

Findings

It has been found that plant extracts and oils show inhibition efficiency up to 98 percent, so it is certain that plant extracts and oils are effective corrosion inhibitors and can be successfully used at the industrial level.

Research limitations/implications

Plant extracts and oils are also found to be non‐toxic, highly efficient, renewable and cheap. But less effort has been given towards the identification of which compound is active in the extract.

Originality/value

The paper shows detailed account of the inhibitors obtained from plants, which are used as natural corrosion inhibitors.
