Abstract

A great deal of contemporary research in education, and in the social sciences more generally, is conducted through interviews. Interview-derived accounts and narratives have been used as data for many decades. We argue that, despite their popularity and their long history, such data are not always subjected to rigorous analysis. Researchers too often treat interviews as sources of insight about informants’ experiences and feelings, but pay insufficient attention to the forms and functions of such accounts. We argue that they need to be approached through the analytic lens of accounting devices and narrative structures. We exemplify this approach through ‘academic’ narratives: scientists’ discovery accounts and accounts of doctoral supervision. We emphasise how such accounts need to be examined in terms of the discursive construction of reality. Such an approach is an important corrective to the selective reporting of ‘atrocity stories’ about postgraduate education.

Abstract

Purpose

Additive manufacturing (AM), a rapidly evolving paradigm, has shown significant advantages over traditional subtractive processing routines by allowing for the custom creation of structural components with enhanced performance. Numerous studies have shown that the technical qualities of AM components are profoundly affected by the discovery of novel metastable substructures in diverse alloys. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the effect of cell structure parameters on its mechanical response.

Design/methodology/approach

Initially, a methodology was suggested for testing porous materials, focusing on static tensile testing. For a qualitative evaluation of the cellular structures produced, computed tomography (CT) was used. Then, the CT scanner was used to analyze a sample and determine its actual relative density, as well as perform a detailed geometric analysis.

Findings

The experimental research demonstrates that the mechanical properties of a cell’s structure are significantly influenced by its shape during formation. It was also determined that using selective laser melting to produce cell structures with a minimum single-cell size of approximately 2 mm would be the most appropriate method.

Research limitations/implications

Further studies of cellular structures for testing their static tensile strength are planned for the future. The study will be carried out for a larger number of samples, taking into account a wider range of cellular structure parameters. An important step will also be the verification of the results of the static tensile test using numerical analysis for the model obtained by CT scanning.

Originality/value

The fabrication of metallic parts with different cellular structures is very important with a selective laser melted machine. However, the determination of cell size and structure with mechanical properties is quiet novel in this current investigation.

Abstract

This paper presents experimental data associated with the properties of thick film thermistors based on a spinel‐type semiconducting oxide/RuO2/glass system. The following parameters—sheet resistivity, thermistor (B) and thermal time (?) constants—have been measured, all as functions of different composition and construction variants. The thermistor properties are independent of configuration and are mainly determined by the semiconducting oxide particle chains. The correlation between B and ? for the compositions considered has been observed.

Abstract

Purpose

Accordingly to the recent multi-scale model proposed by Sih and Tang, different orders of stress singularities are related to different material dependent boundary conditions associated with the interaction between the V-notch tip and the material under the remotely applied loading conditions. This induces complex three-dimensional stress and displacement fields in the proximity of the notch tip, which are worthy of investigation. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Starting from Sih and Tang’s model, in the present contribution the authors propose some analytical expressions for the calculation of the strain energy density (SED) averaged over a control volume embracing the V-notch tip. The expressions vary as a function of the different boundary conditions. Dealing with the specific crack case, the results from the analytical frame are compared with those determined numerically under linear-elastic hypotheses, by applying different constraints to the through-the-thickness crack edges in three-dimensional discs subjected to Mode III loading. Free-free and free-clamped cases are considered.

Findings

Due to three-dimensional effects, the application of a nominal Mode III loading condition automatically provokes coupled Modes (I and II). Not only the intensity of the induced modes but also their degree of singularity depend on the applied conditions on the crack flanks. The variability of local SED through the thickness of the disc is analysed by numerical analyses and compared with the theoretical trend.

Originality/value

The capability of the SED to capture the combined three-dimensional effects is discussed in detail showing that this parameter is particularly useful when the definition of the stress intensity factors (SIFs) is ambiguous or the direct comparison between SIFs with odd dimensionalities is not possible.

It may be from an internal project such as a B.Eng. report or a Masters Dissertation. It may also be work done by the student in an industrial placement. Abstract

Purpose

A large number of data have proved that under the same von Mises equivalent strain condition, the fatigue life under multiaxial non-proportional loading is often much lower than the life under multiaxial proportional loading. This is mainly due to the influence of the non-proportional loading path and the additional hardening effect, which lead to a sharp decrease in life.

Design/methodology/approach

The modulus attenuation effect is used to modify the static hardening coefficient, and the predicted value obtained is closer to the additional hardening coefficient obtained from the experiment. A fatigue life model can consider non-proportional paths, and additional hardening effects are proposed. And the model uses multiaxial fatigue test data to verify the validity and adaptability of the new model. The life prediction accuracy and material application range are satisfactory.

Findings

Because loading path and additional hardening of the material affect fatigue life, a new multiaxis fatigue life model based on the critical plane approach is proposed. And introducing a non-proportional additional damage coefficient, the joint influence of the load path and the additional hardening can be considered. The model's life prediction accuracy and material applicability were verified with multiaxial fatigue test data of eight materials and nine loads compared with the prediction accuracy of the Kandil–Brown–Miller (KBM) model and Fatemi–Socie (FS) model.

Originality/value

The physical meaning of the new model is clear, convenient for practical engineering applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a novel method for identification and classification of rotational motion for uncontrolled satellites. These processes are shown in context of close proximity orbital operations. In particular, it includes a manipulator arm mounted on chaser satellite and used to capture target satellites. In such situations, a precise extrapolation of the target’s docking port position is needed to determine the manipulator arm motion. The outcome of this analysis might be used in future debris removal or servicing space missions.

Design/methodology/approach

Nonlinear, and in some special cases, chaotic nature of satellite rotational motion was considered. Four parameters were defined: range of motion toward docking port, dominant frequencies, fractal dimension of the motion and its time dependencies.

Findings

The qualitative analysis was performed for presented cases of spacecraft rotational motion and for each case the respective parameters were calculated. The analysis shows that it is possible to detect the type of rotational motion.

Originality/value

A novel procedure allowing to estimate the type of satellite rotational motion based on fractal approach was proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

There is a significant knowledge gap in the common understanding regarding the value that investment leading to an increase in project management maturity brings to the organisation. The purpose of this paper is to narrow this gap by investigating the relationship between an increase in the project management maturity level and the project's performance. Additionally, it advocates the investment roadmap approach.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is part of a worldwide research initiative into maturity in project management covering 447 global companies. For this purpose, survey data from experts from 194 select companies was analysed.

Findings

The cost of forthcoming projects depends on the level of maturity of project management and type of industry.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to three different industries (machinery, construction and information technology) and by the method of assessing their future project costs. New research directions are suggested.

Practical implications

The results of the study should help companies in allocating limited resources appropriately using the proposed roadmap.

Social implications

An increase in project management maturity can be achieved through different investment methods. This will benefit society as well.

Originality/value

The paper focuses on global companies dealing in machinery. The area has not been explored sufficiently from the project management perspective. It discusses the relationship between an increase in maturity and future project costs in three industries: machinery, construction and information technology. The paper suggests practical guidelines for project management and sequences in proper investments when resources are limited.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the encounter issues of the Tethered-Space Net Robot System (TSNRS) with non-target objects on orbit during the maneuver, including the collision issues with small space debris and the obstacle avoidance from large obstacles.

Design/methodology/approach

For the collision of TSNRS with small debris, the available collision model of the tethered net and its limitation is discussed, and the collision detection method is improved. Then the dynamic response of TSNRS is studied and a closed-loop controller is designed. For the obstacle avoidance, the variable enveloping circle of the TSNRS has coupled with the artificial potential field (APF) method. In addition, the APF is improved with a local trajectory correction method to avoid the overbending segment of the trajectory.

Findings

The collision model coupled with the improved collision detection method solves the detection failure and speeds up calculation efficiency by 12 times. Collisions of TSNRS with small debris make the local thread stretch and deforms finally making the net a mess. The boundary of the disturbance is obtained by a series of collision tests, and the designed controller not only achieved the tracking control of the TSNRS but also suppressed the disturbance of the net.

Practical implications

This paper fills the gap in the research on the collision of the tethered net with small debris and makes the collision model more general and efficient by improving the collision detection method. And the coupled obstacle avoidance method makes the process of obstacle avoidance safer and smoother.

Originality/value

The work in this paper provides a reference for the on-orbit application of TSNRS in the active space debris removal mission.
