Abstract

Scholars working in the field of the economics of education have long documented how investment in girls’ education delivers the greatest return in terms of societal wellbeing (see, e.g., Dollar & Gatti, 1999; Forbes, 2000; Klasen, 2002). Unfortunately, mainstream economists have quite a narrow interpretation of wellbeing, the rate of growth in gross domestic product (GDP) usually serves as the main barometer. The problem here is that higher rates of economic growth do not necessarily imply improved outcomes in terms of gender equality. Getting girls in school certainly represents progress. There are 129 million girls around the world who are not in school (UNICEF, 2022), and there are numerous obstacles to overcome if this problem is to be seriously addressed. The good news is that far more attention is being devoted to girls’ education and the empowerment of women today than in the past, as countless NGOs and charities have sprung up in recent years that focus on these issues. A key question, however, is whether it is sufficient just to get girls to attend school. Less attention seems to be paid to what they actually do when they get there. Admittedly, some education is better than none at all, but what if girls attended schools where the measure of success was less focussed on exam results, getting a good job, and growing GDP? In this chapter, we present the case for school education that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Green School for Girls (GS4G) – a pilot programme – seeks to implement a curriculum and pedagogy that will produce strong, independently minded, entrepreneurial young women, capable of earning a good living for themselves and their families in a fashion that is in harmony with the interests of the community and the natural environment.

Abstract

The objective of this research conducted in the city of Cuenca is to elaborate on the management platform model of the smart tourist destination (STD). The chapter provides the components to develop such a system as a pilot plan. To maximize the impact of the proposed approach and enhance the decision-making capacities of local actors, the metrics that the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) developed for the so-called intermediate cities in the study “Cuenca Sustainable City” are used. The platform (www.smarturcuenca.com) considers the transcendence of the current reality of the tourism sector, which is open to multidisciplinary work with other sectors to promote the rational use of cultural and natural resources through the Internet of Things (IoT).

Abstract

All around the world, the tourism sector was hard hit by the pandemic. Many nations across the world are majorly dependent on tourism for their gross earnings. It is the backbone of service sector and has a great potential to boost entrepreneurial and related industries. The employment generation through this sector can be enormous if proper emphasis is laid on the factors inducing entrepreneurship, like conducive start-up policies, supportive government initiatives, and adequate financial support to the budding entrepreneurs along with development of financial and societal support systems. Across the globe, many communities suffered due to pandemic and the problems associated with that. Entrepreneurship is regarded as key to business innovation and development of economies. Thereby, in order to plan for resilience strategies, it is very important to understand the peculiarities of entrepreneurial ecosystem. It becomes necessary to understand and strategize the growth of entrepreneurial ecosystem to rebuild communities. This chapter highlights the relationships between entrepreneurial ecosystems and tourism sector for the growth of economy. The major finding is that without entrepreneurial growth, no economy or no sector can revive from crises. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on building effective strategies to support the stakeholders of the entrepreneurial ecosystems so as to promote growth and revive from the damage caused by pandemic.
