Abstract

Purpose

Pre-pandemic research demonstrated the challenges of the nursing workforce and the provision of quality of patient care. Such challenges have been significantly intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, not least in the workplace and fear of staff catching and transmitting COVID-19. We draw on conservation of resources (COR) theory to examine the impact of the fear of COVID-19 on nurses and the role of well-being-HRM (WBHRM) in negating the fear of COVID-19 and its impact on job stress and perceived quality of patient care.

Design/methodology/approach

We collected data from 260 nurses (treating COVID-19 patients) employed in US hospitals across two-waves. Data were analyzed using mediated regression and moderated mediation.

Findings

The results indicated that when nurses report higher levels of fear of COVID-19, this translates into higher levels of nursing job stress. This, in turn, reduces nurses’ perceptions of quality of patient care they can provide. As previous research has found, decreased perceptions of quality of patient care is a significant factor driving intentions to leave the profession. The results demonstrated that WBHRM practices buffer the negative impact of fear of COVID-19 on job stress, and in turn, the perceived quality of patient care.

Originality/value

Our paper contributes to new knowledge for healthcare managers on WBHRM bundles and their efficacy in buffering the effects of fear on job stress and quality of patient care. We contribute new knowledge on fear at work and how to manage employees’ fear through WBHRM practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The research paper comprehensively investigates the gear tooth deflection of standard thermoplastic gears with steel gear as the driver and driven companions. An accurate mapping of characteristic contact regions between the meshing gears was done, and the behaviour of the gear tooth in the premature and prolonged contact zones was studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs the finite element method to conduct a quasi-static 2D analysis of meshing gear teeth. The finite element model was created in AutoCAD and analysed using the ANSYS 19.1 simulation package.

Findings

In the polymer-polymer gear combinations, premature and prolonged contact primarily occurs along the addendum radii of meshing gears, whereas a novel contact phenomenon was observed in the coast side for polymer-metal and metal-polymer combinations, exhibiting a path perpendicular to the standard drive side contact. As well, the deflection of the tooth alters the load distribution across the interlocking gears, leading to a decrement in the root stresses.

Originality/value

The Lewis bending equation demonstrates that bending stresses depend solely on the applied load and the geometry of the tooth. It does not consider the effects of deflection. However, the computational results showed that the gear tooth deflection caused by different gear pair combinations also affects the bending stresses. The contact stresses observed in the polymer-polymer gear combination were observed to be within the material’s proportional limit. However, when a steel gear is paired with a polymer gear, the contact stresses exceed the proportional limit due to coast side contact.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to reduce the residual stress in welded workpieces, optimize the vibratory stress relief treatment process through the use of a vibration generator and enhance the durability and longevity of the workpiece by developing a vibratory stress relief robot that incorporates a multi-manipulator system.

Design/methodology/approach

The multi-manipulator combination work is designed so that each manipulator is deployed according to the requirements of vibration stress relief work. Each manipulator works independently and coordinates with others to achieve multi-dimensional vibratory stress relief of the workpiece. A two-degree-of-freedom mobile platform is designed to enable the transverse and longitudinal movement of the manipulator, expanding the working space of the robot. A small electromagnetic superharmonic vibration generator is designed to produce directional vibrations in any orientation. This design addresses the technical challenge of traditional vibration generators being bulky and unable to achieve directional vibrations.

Findings

The residual stress relief experiment demonstrates that the residual stress of the workpiece is reduced by approximately 73% through three-degree-of-freedom vibration. The multi-dimensional vibration effectively enhances the relief effect of residual stress, which is beneficial for improving the strength and service life of the workpiece.

Originality/value

A new multi-manipulator robot is proposed to alleviate the residual stress generated by workpiece welding by integrating vibratory stress relief with robotics. It is beneficial to reduce material and energy consumption while enhancing the strength and service life of the workpiece.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the dynamics between exogenous shocks, financial stress and economic performance in the USA from January 1995 to August 2023.

Design/methodology/approach

Granger-causality tests and impulse response analyses are used to examine causal relationships and dynamic responses among crude oil prices, real M2 money supply, financial stress and key economic indicators.

Findings

This study reveals a significant correlation between elevated financial stress and reduced real output, along with disruptions in the labor market, potentially leading to economic recessionary trends. Failure to address these challenges could perpetuate labor market difficulties, weaken capital accumulation within the loanable funds market and ultimately hinder long-term economic growth prospects in the USA.

Practical implications

This study offers insights for policymakers to mitigate financial stress. Recommendations include enhancing financial surveillance, strengthening regulatory frameworks, promoting economic diversification and implementing countercyclical policies to stabilize the economy and support labor markets. In addition, proactive monitoring of financial stress indicators can serve as early warning signals, aiding in timely interventions and effective risk management strategies.

Originality/value

This research provides a comprehensive analysis of how the financial stress index (FSI) mediates the effects of external shocks on the US economy, addressing a gap in existing literature. The integration of the FSI into the analysis enhances the understanding of the transmission channels through which external shocks influence the economy.

Abstract

Purpose

Through the lens of the Social Exchange Theory, this study investigates the role of emotional and psychological well-being in explaining the relationship between academic stress and friendship quality.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a cross-sectional quantitative research design, the study gathered data from 298 tertiary students. Statistical analysis was conducted using Hayes Process Macro in SPSS.

Findings

Results from the study challenge conventional assumptions, indicating a positive and significant relationship between academic stress and friendship quality. In addition, the study revealed that psychological well-being partially mediates the relationship between academic stress and friendship quality, while emotional well-being fully mediates the relationship between academic stress and friendship quality.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to the tertiary institutions in Ghana. Future studies may consider expanding the scope to other levels of education to gain a more comprehensive perspective of the variables of the study.

Originality/value

This study presents a novel approach by examining the proposed model within the Ghanaian setting. It offers valuable perspectives on the interplay between academic stress, well-being, and friendship quality.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing upon the needs–supplies fit theory, this study aims to examine how the expected and perceived algorithmic autonomy support (AAS) influences platform workers’ work stress and incivility, with a focus on the moderating role of self-direction.

Design/methodology/approach

Using data collected from 422 platform workers in China through multiple waves, the model is tested through polynomial regression and response surface analysis.

Findings

The results indicate that a mismatch between expected and perceived AAS is associated with higher levels of incivility among platform workers, and this relationship is mediated by work stress. These findings are particularly salient when self-direction is emphasized.

Practical implications

This study suggests that a universally high level of AAS may not necessarily reduce workers’ stress and incivility. Instead, it is important for platforms to ensure that their workers’ expectations of autonomy support are met and for workers to be given the space to exercise self-direction.

Originality/value

Previous studies have highlighted the need to pay attention to workers in mobile and ambiguous environments, and this study adds to this literature by focusing specifically on platform organizations and workplaces. This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between AAS, work stress and platform workers’ incivility.

Abstract

Purpose

Sufficient sample data are the necessary condition to ensure high reliability; however, there are relatively poor fatigue test data in the engineering, which affects fatigue life's prediction accuracy. Based on this, this research intends to analyze the fatigue data with small sample characteristics, and then realize the life assessment under different stress levels.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the Bootstrap method and the principle of fatigue life percentile consistency are used to realize sample aggregation and information fusion. Secondly, the classical outlier detection algorithm (DBSCAN) is used to check the sample data. Then, based on the stress field intensity method, the influence of the non-uniform stress field near the notch root on the fatigue life is analyzed, and the calculation methods of the fatigue damage zone radius and the weighting function are revised. Finally, combined with Weibull distribution, a framework for assessing multiaxial low-cycle fatigue life has been developed.

Findings

The experimental data of Q355(D) material verified the model and compared it with the Yao’s stress field intensity method. The results show that the predictions of the model put forward in this research are all located within the double dispersion zone, with better prediction accuracies than the Yao’s stress field intensity method.

Originality/value

Aiming at the fatigue test data with small sample characteristics, this research has presented a new method of notch fatigue analysis based on the stress field intensity method, which is combined with the Weibull distribution to construct a low-cycle fatigue life analysis framework, to promote the development of multiaxial fatigue from experimental studies to practical engineering applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This study empirically investigates the interdependency of select Asian emerging economies along with the financial stress index during the times of the global financial crisis, the Euro crisis and the COVID-19 period. Moreover, it inspects the long-memory effects of the different crises during the study period.

Design/methodology/approach

To address the objectives of the study, the authors apply different statistical tools, namely the adjusted correlation coefficient, fractionally integrated generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (FIGARCH) model and wavelet coherence model, along with descriptive statistics.

Findings

Financial stress is having a prodigious effect on the economic growth of select economies. From the data analysis, it is found that the long-memory effect is noted in the gross domestic product (GDP) for India and Korea only, which implies that the volatility in the GDP series for these two nations demonstrates persistence and dependency on previous values over a lengthy period.

Originality/value

The study is unique of its kind to consider multi-segments within the period of the study to get a clear idea about the effects of the financial stress index on select Asian emerging economies by applying different econometric tools.

Abstract

Purpose

We draw upon stress theory and utilize the context of the COVID-19 pandemic to investigate how various coping strategies employed by expatriates affect their psychological stress, subsequently influencing their expatriation satisfaction and intention to withdraw from the host country.

Design/methodology/approach

We utilize structural equation modeling to analyze a sample of 453 expatriates residing and working in the United Arab Emirates during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Findings

Our analysis shows that the effects of different coping strategies on expatriates vary. Depending on the nature of the strategy, they can have either positive or negative effects. While coping via problem-focused and denial strategies decreases expatriates' stress, coping by distancing increases it. Social support-seeking is not found to be an effective stress-coping strategy. In terms of implications, the problem-focused strategy leads to the most positive outcomes, whereas distancing leads to the most negative outcomes.

Originality/value

Our study provides significant theoretical and practical insights into expatriates' coping mechanisms within the context of natural crises.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to examine predictors and mediators of work-related stress among Hong Kong police officers.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative secondary survey data were used, based on surveys collected from 335 police officers in Hong Kong between May and June in 2020.

Findings

It was found that operational stressors were directly and positively related to work-related stress among Hong Kong police officers. The more the operational stressors, the more the work-related stress. It was also found that internal procedural justice had an indirect effect on work-related stress via work engagement among Hong Kong police officers. More internal procedural justice fostered an increased work engagement, causing less work-related stress.

Research limitations/implications

Given that the nature of secondary cross-sectional survey data, causal relationships are difficult to make.

Originality/value

Results from this study contribute to the expansion of the job demands-resources model (the JD-R model). This study used structural equation modelling (SEM) for quantitative secondary survey data analysis, providing a more accurate understanding of this topic. This study provides insights into how to formulate relevant measures to reduce work-related stress in policing occupation.
