Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to examine how far search engines have succeeded in retrieving electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) using different search techniques and approaches. This study also compared the search results of search engines to identify the most suitable search engine for searching and retrieving the ETDs.

Design/methodology/approach

Fifty ETDs have been selected using systematic random sampling techniques from Shodhganga (a reservoir of Indian theses). These ETDs have been searched through prominent search engines such as Google, Google Scholar, Yahoo and Open Access Theses and Dissertation (OATD) using different search approaches and techniques.

Findings

The overall performance of the search engines revealed that Google retrieved most of the ETDs (89%) followed by OATD (88.5%), Yahoo (78%) and Google Scholar (76%), respectively.

Originality/value

The results have brought into light interesting findings regarding search engines in retrieving grey literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Hotels are considered one of the keys to tourism industry, without which it is impossible to visualize this industry. Setting the proper price for hotels has always been a nuisance for the decision makers because of its direct relationship with the demand for hotels. Thus, in the current study a Stackelberg game between the government (leader) and the hotels (follower) has been presented to determine the optimal price under competitive conditions. The selected hotels are different with respect to energy consumption and the environmental impact. Thus, the government makes efforts to control their prices with incentives and tariffs.

Design/methodology/approach

The fuzzy inference system (FIS) has also been applied to forecast the hotel demand. Therefore, first off, the demand forecast criteria have been chosen by the experts and in the continuation, it has been screened by fuzzy Delphi approach. Finally, the quantity of hotel demand is computed by the Mamdani inference system. A mathematical model has been presented for determining the optimal sequencing of hotels and minimizing the searches to find a hotel.

Findings

A case study based on the data extracted from online travel agencies (OTAs) has been presented to validate the proposed model. The results demonstrate that by the ranking position increase, the number of the tourists decreases and the higher the star number of a hotel, the lower its ranking position.

Originality/value

Considering the energy saving and environmental impacts in hotel pricing and considering the government's intervention in hotel revenues regarding the incentives and tariffs are the innovations of the present study.

Abstract

Purpose

Relatively little research explicitly considers how a firm’s channel decisions affect consumer tradeoffs between the cognitive costs of online search and the physical costs of visiting a retail store. This study aims to argue that opening a new retail store affects both cognitive and physical search costs, but that the magnitude of these effects depends on the location of the consumer relative to the new store. In addition, individual differences in consumers’ cognitive costs that should moderate these effects.

Design/methodology/approach

This study takes the opening of multiple retailer stores on the same day as the nature experiment. Combining with data from other sources, this study tests the hypotheses using conditional logit for the correction of incidental problem in the traditional fix-effect logit model. Endogeneity issue is tested with the control function approach.

Findings

This study finds that opening a new store leads to a 136% increase in the odds of online visiting by consumers who live in the broader metropolitan area of the new store, while it leads to a 43% decrease in the odds of online visiting by consumers who live in the nearby shopping region. However, the effect of store entry on increasing website search is weaker for consumers who are more loyal, and the effect of store entry on decreasing website search is weaker for consumers who are more efficient in searching online.

Originality/value

This study adds to prior research by identifying when, and for which consumers, opening a physical store has complimentary versus substitutive effects on online search behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of smartphones among young people in everyday life, focusing on the activity of online search. This paper addresses the following research questions: What framings of the smartphone can be identified in the way that young people use, and describe, smartphones? What is the role of online search within these framings? By elucidating framings of the smartphone, this paper also seeks to discuss why and how smartphone use becomes contested in various contexts and situations.

Design/methodology/approach

The material has been produced through ethnographic fieldwork. Focus groups and observations have been carried out with teenagers, age 13–16 years, in three schools in Sweden. In total, 39 pupils participated in the focus groups. Interviews, classroom observations and go-alongs have also been performed.

Findings

In this study, three framings of the smartphone are identified: the entertainment framing, the easy-access framing and the challenging co-presence framing. The framings highlight the way that both the smartphone and online search is viewed, and carried out, in various situations. The smartphone is primarily viewed as a tool for entertainment, by adults and young people alike, yet the findings illustrate that the smartphone is used for more activates than what is immediately apparent.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the field interested in bridging the gap between in-school teachings of information literacies and out-of-school activities by showing how online search happens in various situations. Also, to the field concerned with people’s use of general web search engines in everyday life.

Originality/value

This paper explores the relation between online search and smartphones, a topic which has not been in focus in previous research. The topics of online search and smartphone use have primarily been researched separately but are here researched in conjunction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of job seekers' perceived incivility during job search on their job search intensity via job search-specific self-esteem, and to explore how the job seekers' level of dispositional mindfulness buffers these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

Using self-report measures, time-lagged data were obtained from 242 graduating students of a Chinese university.

Findings

Results showed that perceived incivility during job search was negatively related to job search-specific self-esteem, and that job search-specific self-esteem was positively related to job search intensity. Further, dispositional mindfulness mitigated the direct link between perceived incivility and job search-specific self-esteem and the indirect link between job seekers' perception of incivility and job search intensity through job search-specific self-esteem.

Originality/value

By integrating the recruitment and job search literature, we investigated how negative experiences (perceived incivility during recruitment) stemming from the context of job search influence the motivation of job seekers to continue their job search via the mediating role of job search-specific self-esteem. Further, for the first time, we explored the moderating role of dispositional mindfulness in the job search literature by utilizing the framework of positive psychology.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to establish a theoretical search model on academic social networking sites (ASNSs).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the characteristics of ASNSs and a previous extended sense-making model, this paper first presented an initial model of searching on ASNSs. Next, an online survey was conducted on ResearchGate to understand the search processes and outcomes with the help of a survey questionnaire. In total, 359 participants from 70 countries participated in this online survey. The survey results provided a basis for modifying the initial model.

Findings

Results showed that the theoretical model of searching on ASNSs included motives for searching on ASNSs, identification of needs, search triggered by information needs, search triggered by social needs and outcomes. The search triggered by information needs was significantly positively correlated with learning outcomes. Besides learning outcomes, searching on ASNSs could help user amplify their social networks and promote research dissemination.

Practical implications

Understanding users’ search habits and knowledge acquisition can provide insights for ASNSs to design an interface to support searching and enhance learning. Moreover, the proposed model can help users recognize their knowledge status and learning effects and improve their learning efficiency.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to establishing a theoretical model to understand users’ search process and outcomes on ASNSs.

Abstract

Purpose

Good abandonment behavior refers to users obtaining direct answers via search engine results pages (SERPs) without clicking any search result, which occurs commonly in mobile search. This study aims to better understand users' good abandonment behavior and perception, and then construct a good abandonment prediction model for mobile search with improved performance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an in situ user mobile search experiment (N = 43) and a crowdsourcing survey (N = 1,379) were conducted. Good abandonment behavior was analyzed from a quantitative perspective, exploring users' search behavior characteristics from four aspects: session and query, SERPs, gestures and eye-tracking data.

Findings

Users show less engagement with SERPs in good abandonment, spending less time and using fewer gestures, and they pay more visual attention to answer-like results. It was also found that good abandonment behavior is often related to users' perceived difficulty of the searching tasks and trustworthiness in the search engine. A good abandonment prediction model in mobile search was constructed with a high accuracy (97.14%).

Originality/value

This study is the first to explore eye-tracking characteristics of users' good abandonment behavior in mobile search, and to explore users' perception of their good abandonment behavior. Visual attention features are introduced into good abandonment prediction in mobile search for the first time and proved to be important predictors in the proposed model.

Abstract

Purpose

Existing literature has elicited the external behaviors of cross-device search but not much is known about users' cognition of cross-device search. The study aims to explore how users perceive the cross-device search by combining with the mental models and how motivations affect the users' understanding of cross-device search.

Design/methodology/approach

The research questions are addressed through semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 59 users. Prior to the interview, the user is asked to complete a cross-device search task designed with the simulation of controlled and autonomous motivations to gain a real experience. The concepts of mental models are coded according to the constructivist grounded theory method.

Findings

The study finds the users' mental models of cross-device search consist of four dimensions: Element, Quality, Function and Issue. The effect of motivation on the mental models is tested as significant in terms of the Quality and Function aspects. The controlled motivation affects the user's perception of how the device switch influence the search and the autonomous motivation influences the user's opinion of search system functions.

Originality/value

The contribution of this study is found to extend the existing knowledge of cross-device search and update the mental models of information search in the current multi-device environment. The findings inform the future study of cross-device search and practices of search system design.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the influence of topic familiarity on the four stages of college students' learning search process.

Design/methodology/approach

This study clarified the effects of topic familiarity on students' learning search process by conducting a simulation experiment based on query formulation, information item selection, information sources and learning output.

Findings

The results characterized users' interaction behaviors in increasing topic familiarity through their use of more task descriptions as queries, increased reformulation of queries, construction of more purposeful query formulation, reduced attention to a topic's basic concept content and increased exploration of academic platform contents.

Originality/value

This study proposed three innovative indicators which were proposed to evaluate the effects of topic familiarity on college students' learning search process, and the adopted metrics were useful for observing differences in college students' learning output as their topic familiarity increased. It contributes to the understanding of a user's search process and learning output to support the optimization function of learning-related information search systems and improve their effect on the user's search process for learning.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate a multi-objective electric vehicle’s (EV’s) synergetic scheduling problem in the automotive industry, where a synergetic delivery mechanism to coordinate multiple EVs is proposed to fulfill part feeding tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

A chaotic reference-guided multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on self-adaptive local search (CRMSL) is constructed to deal with the problem. The proposed CRMSL benefits from the combination of reference vectors guided evolutionary algorithm (RVEA) and chaotic search. A novel directional rank sorting procedure and a self-adaptive energy-efficient local search strategy are then incorporated into the framework of the CRMSL to obtain satisfactory computational performance.

Findings

The involvement of the chaotic search and self-adaptive energy-efficient local search strategy contributes to obtaining a stronger global and local search capability. The computational results demonstrate that the CRMSL achieves better performance than the other two well-known benchmark algorithms in terms of four performance metrics, which is inspiring for future researches on energy-efficient co-scheduling topics in manufacturing industries.

Originality/value

This research fully considers the cooperation and coordination of handling devices to reduce energy consumption, and an improved multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is creatively applied to solve the proposed engineering problem.
