Abstract
Purpose
The main objective of this study is to investigate what are the critical success factors that exist for continuous improvement (CI) methodology deployment in the Irish medical technology (MedTech) industry. The research will, in particular, seek to establish if the highly regulated nature of the global MedTech industry is an additional critical failure factor (CFF) for the deployment of CI methodology. The study involves the analysis of the benefits, challenges, CFFs and tools most utilised for the application to the deployment of CI methodologies in the Irish medical device (MD) industry.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative survey was utilised in this study. The main participants were made up of senior quality professionals working in operational excellence, quality consultants, quality directors, quality engineers, quality managers and quality supervisors working in both manufacturing and service sectors from Irish MD companies. A total of 94 participants from the Irish MedTech industry responded to the survey.
Findings
The main finding of this study is that 42% of participants perceived that a highly regulated environment was a CFF to CI, whilst 79% of respondents utilised Lean Six Sigma in their organisations, and productivity and financial factors were found to be the highest reasons for CI deployment amongst the Irish MedTech industry. The top CFFs highlighted for CI in regulated industries were fear of extra validation activity, compliance versus quality culture and a regulatory culture of being “safe”. Another relevant finding presented in this paper is that just over 48% of participants felt that CI tools are very strongly integrated into the industries quality management systems (QMSs) such as the corrective and preventative action system, non-conformance and audit systems.
Research limitations/implications
All data collected in the survey came from professionals working for Irish indigenous and multinational MedTech companies. It is important to highlight that n = 94 is a low sample size, which is enough for a preliminary survey but reinforcing the limitation in terms of generalisation of the results. A further study on a wider European and global scale as well as a comparison with the highly regulated pharma industry would be informative.
Originality/value
The authors understand that this is the very first research focussed on the CFFs for CI in the MedTech/MD manufacturing industry with a specific focus on the highly regulated nature of the industry as a potential CFF. The results of this study represent an important first step towards a full understanding of the applicability and use of CI in the medical-device-manufacturing industries on a global scale.

This paper explains the value of interpreting the design of a country's financial safety net as an exercise in incomplete social contracting.
Design/methodology/approach
Safety net contracts unlucky financial institutions and customers to transfer some or all of what would otherwise be ruinous losses to taxpayers in other sectors. Their capacity to do this is based on a series of unspoken and slowly varying cultural norms that govern when government support is supplied to an insolvent bank, in what forms, on what terms and under what limitations. Identifying these norms is the purpose of this paper. Identifying similarities in the norms that hold sway in the United States and China is the main contribution this paper has to offer.
Findings
Regulators do not want to face the consequences of challenging large insolvent banks' claims that funding problems that their managers know to be hopeless reflect a spate of reversible bad luck and a temporary shortfall in liquidity. In hopes of shifting the problem forward to their successors, regulators forbear from meaningful intervention until and unless crisis-driven depositor runs force them into action.
Research limitations/implications
This means that much like US rescue arrangements, one can demonstrate that the Chinese safety net is incomplete in four ways. It does not fully delineate the events that trigger a loss transfer. It sets formal but imperfectly enforceable limits on the size of potential loss transfers. The political obligations that actually persuade state actors to bail out major banks in a crisis are largely implicit and optional in timing, magnitude and transparency. Finally, the identity of the citizens who will be forced to absorb the costs of crisis bailouts is also optional. Who pays and how they do so will be determined in part during the crisis but will not be finalized until well after the crisis has blown over.
Originality/value
The analysis makes it clear that authorities, express commitment to fair and efficient modes of financial supervision is destined to break down under crisis pressure unless the disadvantaged equity stake that the safety net assigns to taxpayers is rebalanced to record and collect taxpayers' deserved share of the profits a country's megabanks book during booms.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to promote corporate culture (CC) of compliance to ensure responsible business by motivating self-felt and self-imposed strategies by corporations in Australia. It argues that the way “legal compliance” is pursued in Australia may develop undesirable features within corporate internal affairs ranging from adverse reactions to resentment rationalising or concealing of misconduct. This study showcases that the integration of corporation and ethical values in the compliance governance is inevitable to sustain productive CC and public trust in businesses.
Design/methodology/approach
This research is based on existing primary and secondary legal resources and different reports, including the Royal Commission’s Report 2019 and public submissions. It attempts to establish a claim that a self-felt and self-motivated approach to legal compliance contemplated by commitment and devotion to the company, and its consumers instead of external control can achieve consistent and positive outcomes that benefit both the company and its stakeholders.
Findings
While the sanction-deterrence based legal directives provide a strong and sophisticated foundation for detecting and punishing inappropriate culture and have traditionally been effective in fostering compliance, the inclusion of ethical values in the regulatory approach and self-led corporate strategies are required to stimulate sustained compliance, accountability and public trust.
Practical implications
There has been a dearth of intellectual inquiries (to the best of the author’s knowledge) about the role of CC and self-imposed corporate strategies in ensuring legal compliance. This paper will contribute to filling this gap in the legal literature and the wider academic deliberation on the standard and effectiveness of CC.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a model of organizational culture capable of more strongly predicting individual work behavior. For this purpose, the authors integrate the organizational culture profile (OCP) with two independent theories – regulatory focus theory and the theory of basic values.
Design/methodology/approach
Primary data were collected from 22 US public accounting firms. Partial least squares confirmatory composite analysis was used to test the theoretical structure and measurement metrics of the proposed factors.
Findings
The results support that the influence of organizational culture can be conceptualized consistent with a regulatory focus framework. The findings of our research indicate that promotion-focused culture is distinct from prevention-focused culture.
Practical implications
The results raise questions about the common practice across existing person-organization fit research of expecting generic effects across all seven OCP dimensions when predicting individual behaviors. Moreover, empirical evidence for the separate higher-order cultural dimensions supports the conclusion that the OCP’s seven dimensions reflect different underlying motivations likely important in predicting individual work behavior.
Originality/value
This study is the first to not only provide a confirmatory composite analysis of the measure of culture based on the OCP’s original seven cultural dimensions, but also examine the motivational properties of organizational culture through a regulatory focus framework.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the interplay between regulatory, normative and cultural-cognitive factors in the context of sustainability-driven organisational change in Mexican small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Design/methodology/approach
Using qualitative research methods, data were collected through interviews with key stakeholders from eight SMEs in Mexico. Thematic analysis was conducted to explore how regulatory, normative and cultural-cognitive forces influence sustainability initiatives within these organisations.
Findings
The findings reveal a dynamic relationship between regulatory frameworks and broader societal norms, with SMEs strategically aligning with evolving expectations to drive sustainability. Influenced by consumer preferences, normative forces play a pivotal role in shaping internal and external organisational norms. Cultural-cognitive forces, including organisational values and leadership practices, further reinforce this interplay, highlighting the importance of organisational culture in driving sustainable practices.
Research limitations/implications
This study contributes to understanding institutional dynamics driving sustainability initiatives among SMEs, particularly in the Mexican context. Explaining the complex interactions among regulatory, normative and cultural-cognitive forces offers a holistic framework for comprehending the complexities of sustainability-driven organisational change.
Practical implications
The findings provide practical insights for SMEs seeking to navigate sustainability initiatives. Emphasising the proactive role of regulatory compliance, fostering a culture of sustainability and leveraging collaborative opportunities within industries are recommended strategies for driving meaningful organisational change towards sustainability.
Originality/value
This study’s value lies in its development of a conceptual framework illustrating the complex interactions among regulatory, normative and cultural-cognitive forces driving sustainability-driven organisational change in Mexican SMEs. Este estudio explora la interacción entre factores regulatorios, normativos y cultural-cognitivos en el contexto del cambio organizacional impulsado por la sostenibilidad en las pequeñas y medianas empresas mexicanas.
Metodología
Utilizando métodos de investigación cualitativa, se recopilaron datos a través de entrevistas con partes interesadas clave de ocho PYMES en México. Se llevó a cabo un análisis temático para explorar cómo las fuerzas regulatorias, normativas y cultural-cognitivas influyen en las iniciativas de sostenibilidad dentro de estas organizaciones.
Resultados
Los resultados revelan una relación dinámica entre los marcos regulatorios y las normas sociales más amplias, con las PYMES alineándose estratégicamente con las expectativas cambiantes para impulsar la sostenibilidad. Influenciadas por las preferencias de los consumidores, las fuerzas normativas desempeñan un papel fundamental en la formación de normas organizacionales internas y externas. Las fuerzas cultural-cognitivas, incluidas los valores organizacionales y las prácticas de liderazgo, refuerzan aún más esta interacción, destacando la importancia de la cultura organizacional en el impulso de prácticas sostenibles.
Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación
Este estudio contribuye a la comprensión de las dinámicas institucionales que impulsan las iniciativas de sostenibilidad entre las PYMES, particularmente en el contexto mexicano. Explicar las complejas interacciones entre fuerzas regulatorias, normativas y cultural-cognitivas ofrece un marco holístico para comprender las complejidades del cambio organizacional impulsado por la sostenibilidad.
Originalidad/valor
El valor de este estudio radica en el desarrollo de un marco conceptual que ilustra las complejas interacciones entre fuerzas regulatorias, normativas y cultural-cognitivas que impulsan el cambio organizacional impulsado por la sostenibilidad en las PYMES mexicanas. Elucidar estas dinámicas proporciona una comprensión matizada de cómo estas fuerzas se entrelazan, ofreciendo valiosas ideas para navegar iniciativas de sostenibilidad para las PYMES en México.
Implicaciones prácticas
Los hallazgos proporcionan ideas prácticas para las PYMES que buscan navegar las iniciativas de sostenibilidad. Se recomiendan estrategias como enfatizar el papel proactivo del cumplimiento regulatorio, fomentar una cultura de sostenibilidad y aprovechar las oportunidades de colaboración dentro de las industrias para impulsar un cambio organizacional significativo hacia la sostenibilidad.

Influenciadas pelas preferências dos consumidores, as forças normativas desempenham um papel crucial na formação de normas organizacionais internas e externas. As forças cultural-cognitivas, incluindo valores organizacionais e práticas de liderança, reforçam ainda mais essa interação, destacando a importância da cultura organizacional na promoção de práticas sustentáveis.
Limitações/implicações da pesquisa
Este estudo contribui para a compreensão das dinâmicas institucionais que impulsionam iniciativas de sustentabilidade entre as PMEs, particularmente no contexto mexicano. Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the mediating and moderating effects of business regulatory compliance (BRC) on the association between sustainable supply chain management practices (SSCMP) and operational performance (PERFOP), and how corporate sustainability culture (CSC) serves as a boundary condition to BRC.
Design/methodology/approach
This research draws data from 245 firms operating in multiple industries in Ghana. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was employed to test the direct effects, while Hayes Process Macros was employed to test the indirect and conditional effects among the study variables using a structural equation modelling approach.
Findings
The results showed that SSCMP has a direct positive effect on PERFOP. The study further revealed that BRC mediates the relationship between SSCMP and PERFOP. This study found that BRC negatively moderates the association between SSCMP and PERFOP, suggesting that high levels of BRC generate unintended adverse effect on the SSCMP- PERFOP link. However, the results revealed that CSC serves as a boundary condition to BRC.
Originality/value
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that emphasizes how the resource-based view and regulatory focus theory interact to explain how different degrees of CSC and BRC impact SSCMP performance outcomes. This study advances research in the sustainability literature, in response to calls for further research in this domain. This study draws decision-makers attention on the need to make sustainability practices an integral part of corporate culture in order to set a business tone that stimulates easy compliance to sustainability requirements.

Abstract
Purpose
This research aims to analyze whether the self-regulatory focus, a consumer variable, moderates the impact of incongruity on consumer evaluations. A congruity or typicality arises when a product (e.g. champagne) is consistently consumed in certain occasions or is used in conjunction with other specific products. This typicality may remind people of the product with regard to specific contexts but may limit the product’s overall versatility. In line with the moderate incongruity effect, there may be an opportunity to extend a product usage to situations associated with moderate incongruity or atypicality.
Design/methodology/approach
Study 1 is a 2 (self-regulatory focus: promotion/prevention) × 3 (atypicality of product usage context: typical/moderately atypical/highly atypical) between-subject experimental design. Study 2 replicated Study 1 with a sample of different age, three different champagne usage contexts and a manipulation of self-regulatory focus. Study 3 is a 2 (self-regulatory focus: promotion/prevention) × 3 (atypicality of product usage context: typical/moderately atypical/highly atypical) × 2 (product replicates: red wine/pearl jewelry) mixed design with self-regulatory focus and atypicality as between-subjects factors and product replicates as a within-subject variable.
Findings
Promotion-focus consumers’ product evaluations for the moderate incongruity or atypicality are higher than those for congruity and extreme incongruity. The relationship takes an inverted-U shape. Prevention-focus consumers’ product evaluations decrease monotonically as congruity decreases. Moreover, compared with prevention-focus individuals, promotion-focus ones evaluate moderate incongruity more favorably.
Research limitations/implications
There are some limitations to this research. First, it only investigates the moderate incongruity effect with regard to product use occasions and complementary products. To increase the external validity of self-regulatory focus as a moderator of incongruity-evaluation relationships, it remains to future research to extend the research setting to products which have been tightly bonded to specific users, locations, seasons or times. Second, although the experimental designs are similar to previous ones, the scenarios are nevertheless imaginary. Therefore, participants’ involvement levels in all manipulated situations, as well as the quality of their answers, remain unknown.
Practical implications
First, brand managers should target only promotion-focus customers to obtain the moderate incongruity effect, but should maintain a consistent marketing strategy for prevention-focus customers. Second, because both promotion- and prevention-focus individuals have unfavorable evaluations of extreme incongruity, drastic changes in marketing strategies should be avoided. Third, people from a Western (Eastern) culture exhibit more promotion (prevention) focus orientation. Therefore, the type of culture can serve as an indicator of regulatory orientation. Fourth, a gain-framed appeal is recommended for realizing the moderate incongruity effect from promotion-focus consumers. Finally, promotion-focus (vs prevention-focus) consumers will welcome a moderately nonalignable than alignable product upgrade.
Originality/value
Most prior research on goal orientation has found that promotion-focus (vs. prevention-focus) individuals are more inclined to adopt new products, but both types of people are unlikely to purchase new products when the associated risks become salient, while the research related to schema incongruity has suggested that the moderate incongruity effect may not exist when consumers perceive high risks. By combining both schema congruity and self-regulatory focus theories, this research provides a more precise picture of how and why a person’s goal orientation influences the relative salience of risks and benefits with an increase in incongruity.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between geographical traits consisting of institutional traits and cultural traits, and supply chain agility in third-party logistics providers.
Design/methodology/approach
A theoretical model was developed and assessed through a structured questionnaire survey using cross-sectional data from 170 third-party logistics providers registered in Uganda. To validate the suggested model, data were analysed using exploratory factor analysis, correlations and regressions.
Findings
Correlation results revealed that all institutional and cultural geographical traits in the model, i.e. infrastructural frameworks, regulatory frameworks, organisational culture and national culture are positively and significantly associated with supply chain agility. However, a further analysis using regression revealed that regulatory framework and organisational culture are the only significant predictors of supply chain agility and together, all the four traits account for 28.1% variance in supply chain agility.
Research limitations/implications
This study applies the institutional theoretical framework to provide an empirical understanding of the role of institutional and cultural factors in supply chain management practice. Furthermore, it confirms and expands on the existing theories about supply chain agility.
Practical implications
The findings provide firm ground for managerial decisions regarding emphasis on external factors in building firms' supply chain agility. Managers should scan the macro-environment and make conscious firm decisions regarding institutions and culture in certain geographical locations. The host countries should also be aware of their role in building firms' supply chain agility.
Originality/value
Distinctive from the literature on antecedents of supply chain agility, which predominantly focuses on the firm and supply chain capabilities, this study utilises the paradigm of institutional fit to empirically show how managers in a developing country wishing to build supply chain agility should not only focus on their supply chains and internal operations, but go beyond and consider geographical traits when making firm location and/or operational decisions for certain geographical contexts in order to achieve fit.

This paper is a continuation and development of the author's thesis regarding deviant activity in the financial markets of the City of London. The basis of the thesis is that deviant activity in financial institutions has become legitimated in that external regulatory controls have failed to enforce order against the internally generated sub‐cultural codes of practice which have developed consequent upon the forces of economic imperative (the ideology of excellence in the enterprise culture) and globalisation (the technological revolution). The thesis originally dealt with the period between 1984 and 1989 which was characterised as ‘Casino Capitalism’. Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to argue that there is still much scope for improvement in planning and training, for both actors and disaster victims, in the front line of disaster management in Malaysia. Although the established ethos of Malaysia's public service sector has tended to be one of control from above, there is promise and virtue in seeking to promote a professional culture. Ideas and recommendations in finding new solutions to old problems can move upwards as well as downwards due to the technical design in rules and regulations which is now to be accompanied by organisational design.
Design/methodology/approach
Research was undertaken to determine attitudes of actors in disaster management mechanism in Malaysia.
Findings
The actors in public service sectors in Malaysia had a negative attitude towards disaster planning implementation because they are usually not familiar with the Standard Operational Procedure in handling land disaster management in Malaysia called the MNSC Directive 20. Social learning is about initiative of organisations and policy makers in learning through actor's interactions with others and through the knowledge and expertise of others.
Originality/value
The paper shows that the MNSC Directive 20 document is not available for public scrutiny and restricted for reasons of national security, which limits the policy's effectiveness. Even then, documents were circulated for office use only. Learning from status of current policy implementation and suggestion will promote awareness raising and capacity building from the inside of organisations.
