Abstract

In this commentary, we will examine London and Sessa's (this volume) article on continuous learning in organizations from alternative researcher and practitioner perspectives. Specifically, we review its major points, examine the issues of entity selection and definitions, discuss the need for a “parts and wholes” approach, contrast alternative process models that stress the importance of time, and speculate about different user perspectives and their approaches. On balance, their article will stimulate much needed discussion and research in an important area.

Abstract

Chapter 8 synthesizes the research findings from the processes of sensory cognition into the design and configuration of the learning environment. The focus of cognition changes perspective and focus from the attributes of an external stimulus to the internal processes of integration with prior learning and internalization into a new cognition of the individual, which is labeled as the individual's learning ecology. These processes provide a plausible model for the design of the learning environment dimension, which internalizes the learning into transformational and ultimately lifelong learning. The processes of sensory cognition provide a viable and practical model to engineer learning cognition in the same way the brain does with sensory cognition. Like sensory cognition, learning cognition is the result of the structure of the learning environment.

Abstract

Victoria University is one of the few Australian dual-sector institutions that offers vocational, further, and higher education programs. The University offers short courses, apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate studies to 40,000 students. The campuses are primarily located in the western region of Melbourne (Australia) but include Sydney and international sites. The predominant student cohorts come from low socio-economic backgrounds and are the first in family to attend a university.

This chapter reports on the joint partnership between local councils and Victoria University in the development of collaborative learning hubs that anticipate broader access to learning for community members whilst providing links back to larger campus locations. The intended aim of these partnerships is to increase tertiary participation and completions, whilst engaging/reengaging local community members in the art of learning.

The University has embarked on a project to design and implement collaborative learning hubs that provide tertiary courses in a number of local councils. 1 The project builds on the strategic directions of both the councils and the University, which sees itself as the University of Opportunity for people who would traditionally struggle to be successful in tertiary education. The two councils that Victoria University is partnering with are Hume City Council and Hobsons Bay City Council.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to describe the planning of learning, learning organizing implementation, and evaluating the learning of Bahasa in a high school in Lhokseumawe.

Methodology – The research method was descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. Data collection used the techniques of observation, interview, and literature review. The subjects of research were the principal, vice principal, Chairman of Department, and Bahasa teachers in the high school. The data obtained were analyzed with the technique of reduction, display, and verification.

Findings – The results showed that the lessons plan in the high school have been compiled by the Indonesian language/Bahasa teachers, including analyzing subjects, drawing up the annual and semester programs, and syllabus. All the planning of learning Bahasa have been well structured and documented. The implementation of the orientation direction or Bahasa Learning is adapted to the needs and level of education. The implementation of study conducted showed the positive things in accordance with the school-based curriculum.

Research Limitations/Implications – Organizing learning Bahasa also showed the positive things based on the management system. Bahasa teachers carried out their roles and their responsibilities based on their job description. This condition has brought positive influence on the quality of learning Bahasa which shows an increase from year to year.

Practical Implications – Activities and aspects of the Bahasa learning adapted to the assessment are based on the syllabus and compiled lesson plan. The evaluation phase is applied to improve the learning activities. This form of evaluation was done either by oral or writing.

Originality/Value – This is the first research to identify learning management of Bahasa in senior high schools in Lhokseumawe.

Abstract

This chapter explores Generation Z's perceptions of learning. Learning can be viewed from three distinct lenses: effectiveness, enjoyment, and engagement of various modalities. Modalities include demonstrated (watch in person), video-based (watch online), intrapersonal (independent), interpersonal (in collaboration with others), social (among others but not working together), and experiential (doing). Effectiveness involves the extent that a certain modality is effective for learning. Enjoyment is reflective of preference and satisfaction with different modalities. Finally, engagement is the actual utilization of specific modalities.

Abstract

This chapter explores the nature of learning required for effective leaders. The case is made that learning is not all one process and the difference between Learning 1 and Learning 2, as proposed by Bateson, is favoured as a model. Put simply learning, for instance, lots of facts (Learning 1) does not necessarily help the leader become more courageous, more self-confidant and more driven by deep values and beliefs. A case study of a Self Managed Learning programme for school heads is used to show the importance of Learning 2 and a way to focus development at this level. There is also a case study of a company that was seen as the best in its field folding due to the emphasis on Learning 1 (particularly technical skill) and lack of attention to Learning 2 qualities.
