Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the relationship between watching dance and mood enhancement considering potential differences across gender and age brackets.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploratory research was undertaken through a personal survey, using a structured questionnaire on a large sample of young participants between 18 and 35 years old, split into generational cohorts (Millennials or Generation Y and Centennials or Generation Z). Quota sampling (gender and age) was the method used to select respondents.

Findings

Results show that after watching dance, more positive mood changes were observed in general. However, they were stronger among women and younger Millennials. These findings are important as they open a new area of study; show the effects of culture on people; and help design programming strategies to enlarge audiences.

Originality/value

The effects of specific forms of arts and cultural participation on people’s moods have been analyzed from a diversity of disciplines. In the case of dance, studies have tested this relation among practitioners (active participants) but not among viewers (attendees) as this paper does.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper intervenes in the consequences of a myth propagated in academic discourse about the dancesport world, according to which half of the men in Latin dancesport are gay. I challenge two assumptions that surround this myth: that cisgender gay men do not contribute to the reification of the heteronormative gender binary, and that the dancesport scene is inclusive of gay people. These assumptions are based on a blatant lack of understanding of the position of gay men within the dancesport world – that is, the ways in which subjects are constituted through the effects of power.

Design/methodology/approach

This work is based on empirical research I conducted in the dancesport community, including ethnographic and autoethnographic fieldwork, extant documents (e.g. books, blogs, Judging Regulations) and interviews with experts and participants of the dancesport scene (2021/2022). To analyse the data, I relied on the principles of dispositive analysis, grounded theory and dance analysis.

Findings

I show that gay dancers have turned to assimilation as their only available strategy. I discuss the negative consequences of assimilation as a political strategy and how it impacted queer dancers – between invisibilisation, residual shame and a failure to challenge the heteronormative gender binary. This led gay dancers to rationalise and perpetrate harm based on the systems of oppression they had internalised.

Social implications

I conclude the paper by highlighting a way beyond assimilation for queer dancers.

Originality/value

This paper addresses a critical gap in research on LGBT + inclusion in dancesport.

Abstract

Purpose

Organizations will be key to realizing the “transformative change for humanity” now being called for. However, the complexity calls for new ways of facilitating change and organizational learning; it also calls for moving beyond sustainability to develop practices that restore and regenerate the world in which we live. Above all, it calls for the development of new frameworks, practices, mindset and capabilities to hold space for and facilitate such transformation, to dance with the “Logic of Life.” The purpose of this study is to contribute to advancing the current leading frameworks and practices of facilitating learning and development towards the enabling of regenerative transformative change in organizations and society.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on an exploratory qualitative analysis of a facilitation prototype that expands the current framework and practice of Appreciative Inquiry Summits toward regeneration.

Findings

This study presents four paradoxes of regenerative facilitation to guide the dance for life in complex ecosystems. It also identifies that the dance needs to be widened, towards inviting more frequently the ends of the four paradoxes noted as regenerative, negative emotions, inner and more-than-human.

Originality/value

This study explores the intersection of practices and frameworks for facilitating complexity with principles from regenerative leadership and complexity theory, potentially making an important contribution to the urgent and widespread need to facilitate a regenerative transformative change for humanity, society and our organizations.

Pina Bausch is considered one of the most influential choreographers in contemporary dance. She created a new dance language based on a groundbreaking form of joint artistic inquiry. As a leader, Pina Bausch transformed her company into a chosen family of diverse personalities whom she supported in the development of their individual artistic expressiveness. She encouraged her dancers to contribute to her signature style with inventiveness and authenticity. Her ability to integrate the dancers’ contributions into her pieces and bring them to the fore onstage makes Pina Bausch a prime example of creative leadership. While leveraging her company’s collective genius and international fame through boundless curiosity and artistic integrity, Pina Bausch balanced paradoxes of leading innovation. The essence of her leadership style points to the importance of curiosity, humanity, and embodiment in leader-follower relationships.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper explores Salsa co-creation processes in the city of Cali, Colombia. The purpose of this paper is to uncover the processes of bottom-up and top-down place governance at work in the system. This study proposed that these processes are founded on a place-based cultural identity in Cali’s civil society.

Design/methodology/approach

This research draws on practice and structuration theories to understand how social structures frame place-based cultural identity and takes a social constructivist approach to place making and place branding. Empirical data were collected using a qualitative, multi-method approach, with primary data gathered from interviews with key actors and records of in-situ interactions between tourists and local citizens.

Findings

Evidence is presented to show how tourists and visitors are attracted to Cali in pursuit of an urban existential authenticity generated through sensory experiences connected to music and dance mediated by interpersonal interactions with local residents.

Research limitations/implications

Further investigation is needed to gain greater insight into tourists’ motivations, and in addition, a more quantitative approach is required to understand better the range of interpersonal and intrapersonal factors involved.

Practical implications

Place branding should consider synergies between economics and culture as well as exploring the potential of sensorial interactions to produce emotional place attachment in a range of different stakeholders.

Originality/value

While place branding research tends to focus on the views and beliefs of stakeholders (cognitive dimension), this investigation takes an approach to the topic based on interpersonal sensorial interactions between visitors and local inhabitants as part of daily life (emotional dimension).

esta investigación analiza la co-creación artístico-cultural en relación con la Salsa –baile y música- en Cali Colombia; estudiando cómo este proceso emana de la identidad cultural-afectiva de la sociedad civil, y a partir de la base socio-cultural, se crean estrategias económico-culturales y de marketing territorial.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

el enfoque teórico-conceptual sigue un enfoque de construcción social para explorar la autenticidad territorial; y una lógica de servicio -Service-dominant Logic- aplicada a los procesos de co-creación cultural y socio-económico de la música y la danza como artes escénicas populares. Se adopta un enfoque multi-método cualitativo que analiza in situ las interacciones entre turistas y ciudadanos locales.

Hallazgos

se evidencia que las músicas y danzas populares se basan en la identidad de la sociedad civil, de interacciones sociales y expresiones artístico-culturales que co-crean una identidad sensorial cultural; y luego esas manifestaciones culturales son adoptadas por las elites empresariales para crear grandes shows o festivales de música y baile, y por los gobiernos para consolidar políticas culturales.

Limitaciones de investigación

el análisis se aplica a una ciudad en concreto, el proceso de co-creación de la Salsa en Cali, Colombia, donde turistas y viajeros son atraídos por la autenticidad de experiencias sensoriales de música y danza a través de interacciones interpersonales con los residentes caleños.

Implicaciones prácticas

los procesos de Marca Territorial deben considerar las sinergias entre las dimensiones económicas y culturales, y también las interacciones sensoriales, que propician conexiones afectivas y emocionales para diversos grupos implicaciones con el territorio.

Originalidad/valor

más allá de las grandes ciudades mundiales productoras de cultura, es necesario conocer mejor cómo emergen propuestas creativas de ciudades pequeñas y medias de países emergentes cuyas ricas tradiciones culturales, atraen viajeros y turistas en busca de experiencias de autenticidad interpersonal, en contacto con habitantes locales, en sus vivencias diarias e interacciones culturales.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper describes how a pre-service teacher’s knowledge and pedagogy changed as she documented her reflective practice while teaching arts-integrated lessons in a fifth-grade classroom during her pre-service teacher preparation program. The pre-service teacher spent three-months conducting an action research project in collaboration with a university mentor.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explores what she and her mentor learned as she prepared arts-integrated lesson plans based on the four studio structures for learning and analyzed them along with identifying and documenting evidence of deep learning through field notes and video recordings.

Findings

Analysis of field notes, video recordings and lesson plans led the authors to take a deeper look at where the four studio structures for learning overlapped in the teaching event. In the data the intersections of the four studio structures shared a pattern of increased evidence of deep learning for the students. This paper describes the phenomenon in the classroom at various points of intersection.

Research limitations/implications

This action research study is preliminary, and the findings are suggestive of further research that would require indexing what deep learning looks like and gathering and analyzing student data.

Practical implications

It is recommended that teachers use the four studio structures to integrate the arts in their classrooms and to enhance and encourage creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, character and culture and as teachers work toward deep learning for students.

Originality/value

This case shows how a university partnership provides fertile ground for educators of all skills and experience to participate in the expansion of the field of education as well as personal and professional development.

Purpose

Arts-integration is a promising approach to building students’ abilities to create and critique arguments with data, also known as informal inferential reasoning (IIR). However, differences in disciplinary practices and routines, as well as school organization and culture, can pose barriers to subject integration. The purpose of this study is to describe synergies and tensions between data science and the arts, and how these can create or constrain opportunities for learners to engage in IIR.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors co-designed and implemented four arts-integrated data literacy units with 10 teachers of arts and mathematics in middle school classrooms from four different schools in the USA. The data include student-generated artwork and their written rationales, and interviews with teachers and students. Through maximum variation sampling, the authors identified examples from the data to illustrate disciplinary synergies and tensions that appeared to support different IIR processes among students.

Findings

Aspects of artistic representation, including embodiment, narrative and visual image; and aspects of the culture of arts, including an emphasis on personal experience, the acknowledgement of subjectivity and considerations for the audience’s perspective, created synergies and tensions that both offered and hindered opportunities for IIR (i.e. going beyond data, using data as evidence and expressing uncertainty).

Originality/value

This study answers calls for humanistic approaches to data literacy education. It contributes an interdisciplinary perspective on data literacy that complements other context-oriented perspectives on data science. This study also offers recommendations for how designers and educators can capitalize on synergies and mitigate tensions between domains to promote successful IIR in arts-integrated data literacy education.
