Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the progress made in achieving sustainable development goal-2 (SDG 2) in India, with a focus on ending hunger, ensuring food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture. The assessment uses data from SDG Index reports, which offer a comprehensive overview of the advancements made by 28 states and 8 union territories (UTs) in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The evaluation is based on information derived from three editions of the SDG Index reports, initially published in 2018 and subsequently in 2019 and 2020. These reports provide a detailed analysis of the status and achievements of different states and UTs in relation to SDG 2. The categorization of states and UTs into aspirant, performer, front runner and achiever categories serves as a crucial framework for assessing the progress.

Findings

Despite concerted efforts by India, the majority of states and UTs are positioned in the aspirant and performer categories, suggesting that significant challenges persist in achieving SDG 2 targets. The results emphasize the necessity for stronger measures to elevate states and UTs to the categories of front-runners and achievers. The persistent challenges of malnutrition, hunger and their economic ramifications require immediate and strategic interventions to address these pressing concerns.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of the progress towards SDG 2 in India, using the insights from the SDG Index reports. The categorization framework used in this assessment offers a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by different regions, highlighting the original contribution of this study. The findings underscore the urgency of targeted efforts to address malnutrition, hunger and related issues, emphasizing the importance of sustained commitment to achieving SDG 2 for the overall well-being of vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Beyond the rhetoric of Nigeria's policymakers, there are multifaceted challenges threatening sustainable development (SD) in Nigeria under climate change (CC). To strengthen theory and practice, this chapter discusses SD under CC in Nigeria using SWOT analysis. The exploratory focus of this chapter made the qualitative research method, an interpretivist research paradigm, most appropriate. Data sourced from scholarly articles and other secondary resources were reviewed, integrated and synthesised using SWOT analysis. At the end of the SWOT analysis, four insights emerged. The strengths and opportunities of SD under CC include increased awareness and growing access to climate-friendly technologies, sustainable finance, climate-friendly agriculture, solar technologies and renewable energy solutions, among others. The weaknesses and threats include deforestation, unabated gas flaring, rising carbon emissions and exorbitant cost of climate-friendly technologies, among others. The chapter explicates the need for policymakers and regulatory agencies in Nigeria to consolidate the strengths, correct all weaknesses, harness opportunities and avert the looming threats of CC. The chapter contributes to the three themes of SD by affirming that CC comes with devastating consequences that evidently pose existential risks and threats to people, profits and the planet. Consequently, policymakers need to mobilise sufficient resources and capabilities for CC adaptation and mitigation to achieve SD in Nigeria.

Abstract

The paper is the story of the marginalization of the concept of networks of dyadic exchanges or patronage and clientage by Brazilian intellectuals and Brazilianist academics. I contend that though it is a pervasive pattern in the culture of the nation, Brazilian intellectuals wrote about patronage/clientage as an aspect of politics that is responsible for the country's backwardness and underdevelopment. Anthropologists, for the most part, judged it to be exploitative of the people involved and believed that it should be eliminated. The Workers Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores or PT), as it implemented a highly commended conditional cash transfer program to help the poor, attempted to replace it with an alternative way they believed electoral politics ought to be conducted. I suggest that the pattern continues to be more than exchanges between political office seekers and voters in Brazil as it transcends the political, economic, and religious categories of modernity and may provide the most needy with what the labor market does not.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explain how improving tourism destination quality could contribute to addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at tourism destinations.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper synthesizes literature on sustainability, the SDGs and tourism destination quality and considers sustainability from the destination quality frame of reference. The approach starts with a critical analysis of principles of sustainability, as embodied in the 17 SDGs in terms of whether they are primarily concerned with “quantity” or “quality.” This is followed by examining potential links between destination quality and the SDGs using results of a recent empirical research on tourism destination quality (TDQ study).

Findings

This paper reveals that most of the SDGs are largely focused on quantity, while relatively few are concerned primarily with quality. Several TDQ dimensions, specifically “authentic,” “safe,” “well kept,” “affordable,” “novel,” “varied,” “relaxing,” “uncrowded,” “hospitable” and “informative,” and in addition, the holistic perspective of destination quality indicated in the TDQ study, are revealed as having strong links with the SDGs largely because of their concern with quality. This paper therefore proposes a positive relationship between enhancing destination quality and addressing the SDGs at tourism destinations.

Research limitations/implications

This paper calls for future empirical research to test the theoretical links between destination quality and SDGs established in this paper.

Practical implications

The use of the proposed framework for managing tourism destination quality and sustainability can help destination managers in enhancing destination quality and the attainment of the SDGs.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper that adapts the extant theory on sustainability (represented by the SDGs) by introducing a destination quality frame of reference. The links between tourism destination quality and the SDGs have not been previously investigated. This paper indicates strong relationships between destination quality and several SDGs and thus extends the existing theory on sustainability by introducing the quality improvement perspective.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

Este artículo sintetiza la literatura sobre la sostenibilidad, los ODS y la calidad de los destinos turísticos, y considera la sostenibilidad desde el marco de referencia de la calidad de los destinos. El enfoque comienza con un análisis crítico de los principios de sostenibilidad, tal y como se plasman en los 17 ODS, en cuanto a si se refieren principalmente a la “cantidad” o a la “calidad”. A continuación, se examinan los posibles vínculos entre la calidad de los destinos y los ODS, utilizando los resultados de una reciente investigación empírica sobre la calidad de los destinos turísticos (en adelante, el estudio TDQ).

Objetivo

Este trabajo conceptual explica cómo la mejora de la calidad de los destinos turísticos podría contribuir a abordar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de las Naciones Unidas en los destinos turísticos.

Conclusiones

El documento revela que la mayoría de los ODS se centran en la cantidad, mientras que relativamente pocos se ocupan principalmente de la calidad. Varias dimensiones del TDQ, en concreto, “Auténtico”, “Seguro”, “Bien cuidado”, “Asequible”, “Novedoso”, “Relajante”, “Poco concurrido”, “Hospitalario” e “Informativo”, y además la perspectiva holística de la calidad de los destinos indicada en el estudio del TDQ, se revelan con fuertes vínculos con los ODS, en gran parte debido a su preocupación por la calidad. En consecuencia, el trabajo propone una relación positiva entre la mejora de la calidad del destino y el cumplimiento de los ODS en los destinos turísticos.

Limitaciones/implicaciones de la investigación

El trabajo realiza una llamada a futuras investigaciones empíricas para comprobar los vínculos teóricos entre la calidad de los destinos y los ODS establecidos en este artículo.

Implicaciones prácticas

El uso del marco propuesto para la gestión de la calidad y la sostenibilidad de los destinos turísticos puede ayudar a los gestores de destinos a mejorar la calidad de estos y la consecución de los ODS.

Originalidad/valor

Este es el primer artículo que adapta la teoría existente sobre la sostenibilidad (representada por los ODS) introduciendo un marco de referencia de la calidad de los destinos. Los vínculos entre la calidad de los destinos turísticos y los ODS no se han investigado anteriormente. Este trabajo indica que existen fuertes relaciones entre la calidad de los destinos y varios ODS y, por tanto, amplía la teoría existente sobre la sostenibilidad introduciendo la perspectiva de la mejora de la calidad.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the increased research attention gained by sustainability in food supply chain management. Although previous review studies have focused on aspects such as traceability, food safety, and performance measurement, sustainability has rarely been considered as a means of integrating these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a comprehensive review of the literature on food sustainable supply chain management (FSSCM). Using systematic review methods, relevant studies published from 1997 to early 2021 are explored to reveal the research landscape and the gaps and trends.

Findings

The paper shows the building blocks and the main research directions in FSSCM, particularly considering the opportunities in “neglected” emerging countries. Insights are provided into the various elements of the sustainability supply chain in the food industry, which have previously been analysed separately.

Originality/value

Only a few researchers have systematically reviewed the literature or taken a bibliometric approach in their analyses to provide an overview of the current trends and links between sustainability and food supply chain management.
