Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge sharing has become necessary for organizations as it is a source of competitive advantage. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how empowering leadership through psychological empowerment encourages employees’ knowledge-sharing (KS) behavior. This study further explores the moderating role of learning goal orientation (LGO) between psychological empowerment and KS behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

This study collected data from 423 employees working in manufacturing and service organizations in two waves on convenience basis to tackle common method variance. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results revealed that empowering leadership helps employees modify their KS behavior both directly and indirectly in the presence of psychological empowerment. Moreover, individuals high in LGO are more likely to involve in KS behavior when psychologically empowered.

Research limitations/implications

This study used a cross-sectional design and suggests management focus on their working environment to enhance knowledge sharing among employees, which is possible through empowering leaders. The study further suggests management not ignore individual attributes during recruitment.

Originality/value

Drawing upon job characteristics model and social exchange theory, this study explores the mediating role of psychological empowerment between empowering leadership and KS behavior and the moderating role of LGO on the association between psychological empowerment and KS behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at analyzing the detrimental cross-level serial effects of leaders' Machiavellianism and abusive supervision on subordinates' burnout and task performance. The general aggression model and conservation of resources theory guide our research model.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed a multilevel design and used multisource data. The authors collected data from 50 bank branches located in Pakistan. A total of 50 branch supervisors participated, which yielded 200 supervisor-subordinate dyads. Machiavellianism was self-assessed by the supervisors who further rated the specific task performance of each of their respective subordinates. Burnout and abusive supervision ratings were provided by the subordinates. Abusive supervision scores were aggregated at the group level.

Findings

Machiavellianism has an indirect negative effect on individual-level task performance through the serial cross-level mediating effects of abusive supervision at the group level and attendant individual-level burnout.

Practical implications

Findings provide practical implications for the management of task performance and human resources.

Originality/value

This study offers a comprehensive cross-level model to analyze the effect of Machiavellianism on group-level and individual-level outcomes known to affect the effectiveness of leaders.

Abstract

Purpose

This aims to explore the relationship between the agile methods barriers in large-scale contexts and the benefits for business, team and product and process, exploring the organizational readiness (OR) mediating role.

Design/methodology/approach

We propose a theoretical model through survey-based research, applying partial least square structural equation modelling.

Findings

We confirmed that OR mediating effect on the relationship between agile methods barriers and team benefits. We operationalized OR in a broader context that embeds the strategic alignment of large-scale agile implementation, considering variables such as organizational structure and culture.

Research limitations/implications

The data are cross-sectional rather than longitudinal, which limits temporal interpretations of the associations between agile methods and organizational issues.

Practical implications

The findings offer a way forward for organizations already using or planning to implement agile management to understand the pathway towards achieving the expected benefits. Our study also unveils the importance of looking at OR when implementing such a complex change in management from traditional to large-scale contexts.

Originality/value

Our results show the significant and positive influence of agile method on all three benefit variables (team, business, product and processes). Furthermore, we identified the significant and positive mediating role of OR on the relationship between agile method and team benefits.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents a comprehensive investigation of turnover intention within the context of higher education, specifically focusing on private universities in Egypt, to develop a robust conceptual framework to explore this phenomenon.

Design/methodology/approach

The study sample comprised both male and female tenured faculty members from private universities, and data were collected through questionnaires, resulting in 396 completed responses. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) software.

Findings

The study highlights the significant impact of work-life balance (WLB) and organizational commitment on turnover intention, with job satisfaction as a mediating factor. Additionally, the research reveals that emotional intelligence (EI) does not directly influence turnover intention, but its effects are fully mediated by job satisfaction.

Originality/value

This research not only advances the theoretical understanding of why academics contemplate leaving their positions but also underscores the significance of this topic. Moreover, by exploring turnover intention in the private education sector of the Middle East, the study addresses a notable gap in the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of high-performance HR practices (HPHRP) on the innovative work behaviour (IWB) of employees. Drawing on social exchange theory, when employees perceive their exchange relationship in terms of HPHRP and leadership support as fair, we hypothesize that employees will demonstrate greater IWB. However, drawing on social identity theory, we hypothesize that when the attitude of employees towards their employer with best employer practices is favourable, the impact of HPHRP mediated by organizational pride and organizational identification, has a greater impact on employee IWB.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey research was used to empirically validate the study involving employees (n = 370) who belong to the best employer brands in India. The data was analysed using Process Macro Models 7 for moderated mediation and Model 6 for serial mediation using bootstrapping procedures.

Findings

The results suggest that perceived leadership support moderated the indirect effect of HPHRP on IWB through organizational pride. Again, organizational pride and identification partially and serially mediated the impact of HPHRP on IWB.

Research limitations/implications

Organizations must invest in HPHRP, with supportive leadership practices that can foster an emotional attitude of pride and a cognitive attitude of organizational identification to be an employer of choice resulting in employees’ IWB.

Originality/value

The study investigating the mediating impact of the emotional and cognitive attitudes of pride and organizational identification has not been previously explored, in the relationship between HPHRP and IWB, from a social identity perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of smart talent management (STM) on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which is mediated by providing an adoption innovation climate, and to verify the moderate power of adoption motivational culture on STM and SMEs performance (SMEsP).

Design/methodology/approach

The quantitative methodology was adopted through an online survey questionnaire to collect data from SMEs listed in Chambers of Commerce and Industry located in Jordan, the United Arab of Emirates and Kind Saudi Arabia in the Middle East region. Responses were collected from 163 firms out of 568, representing a 28.7% response rate. The data were analyzed using the structural equation modeling technique to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The results of this study fail to support the view that STM has a positive and significant effect on SMEs’ performance, as well as the adoption of motivational culture strengthened the relationship between STM and SMEsP. In addition, the adoption of motivational culture strengthened the relationship between STM and SMEs’ performance.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

Social value creation (SVC) is the primary emphasis for unifying the various issues in contemporary social entrepreneurship (SE) literature and practice since it highlights the fundamental problem of sustainability in SE business. Accordingly, SVC as an outcome of SE represents the primary drive of social entrepreneurs (SEs). However, SEs encounter multi-dimensional challenges as they work to build their SE businesses and create social value. In the current context of digitally transforming entrepreneurship scenario, this study investigates the role of SE compassion and digital learning orientation (DLO) for SVC ability of SEs.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilized a quantitative survey approach for primary data collection from social entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia. A total of 158 valid replies from social entrepreneurs were obtained for the study. Using SmartPLS (3.0), partial least square structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.

Findings

The results validated a model of SVC in which the SE compassion and DLO positively impact the SVC ability in SEs. However, the impact of DLO in moderating the SE compassion - SVC relationship in SEs was not proven.

Practical implications

The study established the role of SE compassion in explaining the distinctive SVC ability in SEs. Meanwhile, given the expanding necessity for SEs to leverage digital technologies for SE missions, the study provides implications for nurturing positive outcomes in terms of SE compassion and DLO outcomes among SEs. This organized knowledge can help entrepreneurs, educators and policymakers better incorporate these concerns in SE education, and social enterprises and entrepreneurs’ developmental initiatives.

Originality/value

This work is pioneering in that it conceptualizes and tests a theoretical framework that links SE compassion, DLO, and SVC in SEs. Meanwhile, the study is the first to operationalize the DLO in entrepreneurs. The study thus generates fresh insights about SVC in SE amid the digitally transforming entrepreneurship scenario.
