Abstract

Purpose

A quantitative study that can identify the primary aerodynamic forces and relate them to individual vortical structures is lacking. The paper aims to clarify the quantitative relationships between the aerodynamic forces and vortical structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The various contributions to the aerodynamic forces on the two-dimensional impulsively started plate are investigated from the perspective of the vorticity moment theorem. The angles of attacks are set to 45°, 58.5° and 72°, while the Reynolds number is 10,000 based on the chord length. Compared with the traditional pressure force analysis, this theorem not only tells us the total aerodynamic force during the motion, but also enables us to quantify the forces contributed from the fluid elements with non-zero vorticity.

Findings

It is found that the time-dependent force behaviors are dominated by the formations and evolutions of these vortical structures. The analysis of the time-averaged forces demonstrates that the lift contributed from the leading edge vortex (LEV) is nearly four times larger than the total lift and the drag contributed from the starting vortex (SV) is almost equal to the total drag when the angle of attack (AoA) increases to 72°, which means the LEV is “lift structure” whereas the SV is “drag structure”.

Practical implications

The present method provides a better perspective for flow control and drag reduction by relating the forces directly to the individual vorticity structures.

Originality/value

In this paper, the Vorticity Moment Theory is first used to study the quantitative relationships between the aerodynamic forces and the vortices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to improve the computational efficiency and to achieve high-order accuracy for the computation of helicopter rotor unsteady flows in forward flight during the industrial preliminary design stage.

Design/methodology/approach

The integral arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian form of unsteady compressible Navier–Stokes equations with low Mach number preconditioned pseudo time terms based on non-inertial frame of reference undergoing rotating and translating was derived and discretized in the framework of multi-block structured finite volume grid using three types of spatial reconstruction schemes, i.e. the third-order accurate monotonic upwind scheme for conservation laws, the fifth-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory and the fifth-order accurate weighted compact nonlinear schemes.

Findings

The results show that the present non-inertial computational method can obtain comparable results with other methods, such as the dynamic overset method, and make sure that the higher-order spatial schemes can significantly improve the tip vortex resolution.

Originality/value

The computational grid used by the present method remained static during the whole unsteady computation process, with only local deformations induced by blade cyclic pitch and other operating motions, which greatly reduced the complexity of grid motion and enhanced the efficiency and robustness.

Abstract

This paper explores the potential competitive advantages from the development of an internal network of subsidiaries and external network of alliances. Given the broad scope and lack of systematic investigation in prior research, clinical field research was conducted in eleven Japanese subsidiaries in China. Our in‐depth interviews revealed that there are benefits and costs associated with the development of both subsidiary networks and alliance networks. While there are exploitation and exploration benefits from subsidiary network development, internationalizing firms (especially smaller firms) are subject to the liability of foreignness. Alliance network development is an effective way to mitigate this liability if internationalizing firms choose the right alliance strategy.

The current study is a review-based analysis combined with some case studies that focuses on establishing a link between artificial intelligence (AI) and the emerging trends of regenerative tourism and green destinations. Regenerative tourism and green destinations are the new hallmark, promoting sustainability in the travel industry by restoring ecosystems and encouraging friendly practices. The incorporation of AI into sustainable tourism has a potential to revolutionize how one can approach tourism by providing customer experiences and to contribute towards a sustainable future. AI has naturally found its place in industries due to the advancements in data analysis and computing power. In the context of tourism, AI’s data-driven capabilities are discussed in the current review, to showcase how they enable recommendations for intelligent automation and efficient resource management. With the implementation of AI-powered technologies, tourism operations become more efficient, providing opportunities for sustainable development and conservation in green destinations. The integration of AI in destinations encompasses applications such as energy management, waste reduction, transportation optimization and sustainable resource management. These AI-driven solutions play an important role in minimizing the impact caused by tourism activities while conserving natural resources. Additionally, AI facilitates delivering experiences that align with eco-values through recommendation systems and virtual assistants. The chapter tackles issues related to AI such as protecting data privacy, addressing biases dealing with job displacement and ensuring cultural relevance. It emphasizes the significance of inclusive implementation of AI and explores the challenges faced when implementing AI solutions in developing regions that have limited resources.

Abstract

Purpose − The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel and simple strategy for construction of hybrid‐“stress function” plane element. Design/methodology/approach − First, a complementary energy functional, in which the Airy stress function is taken as the functional variable, is established within an element for analysis of plane problems. Second, 15 basic analytical solutions (in global Cartesian coordinates) of the stress function are taken as the trial functions for an 8‐node element, and meanwhile, 15 unknown constants are then introduced. Third, according to the principle of minimum complementary energy, the unknown constants can be expressed in terms of the displacements along element edges, which are interpolated by element nodal displacements. Finally, the whole system can be rewritten in terms of element nodal displacement vector. Findings − A new hybrid element stiffness matrix is obtained. The resulting 8‐node plane element, denoted as analytical trial function (ATF‐Q8), possesses excellent performance in numerical examples. Furthermore, some numerical defects, such as direction dependence and interpolation failure, are not found in present model. Originality/value − This paper presents a new strategy for developing finite element models exhibits advantages of both analytical and discrete method.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the determinants of behavioral intentions during the previsit stage by investigating the influence of audience involvement with the audiovisual product and the mediating role played by place attachment.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling was employed to verify the hypothesized relationships using the AMOS 24.0 program to assess the proposed model. A total of 564 young Chinese audiences who had watched the Thai television (TV) series “I Told Sunset About You” but had not previously visited Phuket, Thailand, were collected using the online survey as participants.

Findings

The findings indicate that audience involvement has a significant positive effect on place attachment and behavioral intentions during the previsit stage. Place attachment significantly influences behavioral intentions. Moreover, the result suggests that place attachment significantly mediates the relationship between audience involvement and behavioral intentions.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to film tourism research by revealing the crucial role of audience involvement in enhancing place attachment and fostering behavioral intentions toward depicted destinations among potential tourists.

Practical implications

This study suggests that destination marketers should be aware of the soft power of films and TV series to promote destination and attract prospective tourists.

Originality/value

This study provides a distinctive perspective on the interrelationships between audience involvement, place attachment, and previsit behavioral intentions. Additionally, it sheds light on the underlying mechanisms influencing potential tourists' behaviors in the context of film tourism.

This chapter aims to assess the scope of India's gastronomic tourism post-COVID-19 and discuss the utilisation of vlogs to promote India as a gastronomic destination. First, the evolution of gastronomic tourism is reviewed. Next, opportunities and challenges associated with India's gastronomic offerings, both from international and domestic tourism perspectives, are discussed. Then, the role of vlogging to position and promote India as a gastronomic destination is established. The chapter suggests recommendations for the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India on utilising vlogging to promote gastronomic tourism.

Abstract

Every year, tens of millions of the 1.4 billion cars on the world’s roads are decommissioned. While the ferrous and other metals that constitute about 75% of a vehicle by weight can be readily and profitably recycled, the remaining mix of plastics, glass, composites, complex materials, fragments and contaminants are mainly destined for landfill as automotive shredder residue (ASR). For every car, approximately 100–200 kg of ASR is disposed of in landfill, posing a growing technical and environmental challenge worldwide. The recovery of the ASR for high-end application is the focus of this study, aiming to optimise the use of these valuable resources and minimise the extractive pressure for raw materials, a future green manufacturing, contributing towards a zero waste circular economy. As the dissolution of carbon into iron is a key step in the manufacture of iron-carbon alloys, the feasibility of utilizing the waste polymers within ASR as sources of carbon in different areas of pyrometallurgical processing was investigated. Polypropylene and rubber, in a blend with metallurgical coke, were used as carbonaceous substrates and the slag-foaming phenomenon was investigated via the sessile drop technique in an argon environment at 1,550°C. The results indicated the rubber/coke blend achieved significantly better foaming behaviour, and the PP/coke blend exhibited a moderate improvement in slag foaming, in comparison to 100% metallurgical coke. The overall results indicated the incorporation of ASR had significant improvement in foaminess behaviour, increasing furnace efficiency.
