Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigates the influence of proactive personality on employee radical creativity through transformational leadership, professional ethical standards and creative self-efficacy.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from 343 superior–subordinate dyads in China. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to measure the validity of the variables. A regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between model assumptions.

Findings

The results showed that: (1) Proactive personality was positively related to employee radical creativity. (2) Transformational leadership and professional ethical standards moderated the relationship between proactive personality and radical creativity. Specifically, the relationship between proactive personality and employee radical creativity was strong, as expected. It was the strongest in the presence of high transformational leadership and high professional ethical standards. (3) Creative self-efficacy acted as a mediator in this interaction.

Originality/value

This study is a pioneering investigation in the Chinese context. It empirically examines the interactive relationship between proactive personality and radical creativity through transformational leadership and professional ethical standards. Additionally, it substantiates creative self-efficacy as the psychological mechanism behind this interaction. Consequently, this study offers a comprehensive framework with potential implications for personality assessments in the workplace, leadership training, criteria formulation and enhancement of radical creativity.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to clarify the friction properties of 304 steel surface modification. The surface modification includes laser texturing processing and nitriding treatment on 304 steel surface, and then the friction properties’ test was conducted on different friction directions and different upper test samples by using microfriction and wear testing machine.

Design/methodology/approach

The diameter and spacing of 100-, 150-, 200-, 300-μm pit array on the surface of 304 steel were calculated using a M-DPSS-50 semiconductor laser device. Then, the textured surface was nitriding-treated using a nitriding salt bath device. The chemical composition, surface morphology and surface microhardness of the composite-modified surface were measured by X-ray diffraction and by using an optical microscope and a microhardness tester. The tribological characteristics of the composite-modified surface were tested by MRTR microcomputer-controlled multifunctional friction and wear testing machine.

Findings

The result showed that a rule pit texture surface was obtained by the texture processing. The microhardness of nitriding treatment surface reached 574.27HV0.1, which significantly higher than 222.58HV0.1 of 304 steel. The composite-modified surface has excellent anti-friction and wear resistance properties when the upper specimen was GCr15 steel and ZrO2, respectively. The composite-modified surface has excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties after long time friction under different angles. However, the friction coefficient and wear morphology of the friction pairs are not affected by the friction angle.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the chosen research approach, the research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further.

Practical implications

The paper conducted a systematic study of the tribological characteristics of 304 steel composite modification surface and provided a good basis for the extensive application of 304 steel.

Social implications

The study provides a good basis for the extensive application of 304 steel.

Originality/value

This paper fulfils an identified need to study the extensive application of 304 steel.

Abstract

Purpose

Three types of pattern on the monocrystalline silicon surface were prepared by using laser surface processing equipment. The DLC film and Si-DLC film on the patterning surface were deposited by using PECVD-2D plasma chemical vapor deposition sets. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The tribological properties of the films were investigated by using the UMT-2 micro friction and wear tester. The surface topography, composition, hardness and elastic modular of the films were determined by Raman spectrum, nano mechanics tester and three-dimensional topography instrument. The worn surface topographies of the surface patterning films were tested by scanning electron microscopy.

Findings

The results show that the patterning monocrystalline silicon substrate surface has good anti-friction property under low load. The patterning DLC film and Si-DLC film surface have very good anti-friction property under all the test loads. The reason of these results is that the surface patterning film not only reduces the real contact area of the friction pairs but also has low surface bonding force.

Originality/value

This paper prepared three kinds of microscopic patterns on the monocrystalline silicon surface by using laser surface processing equipment. And then deposited DLC film and Si-DLC film on the patterning surface. All kinds of surface patterning monocrystalline silicon had very good anti-friction property under low load. And all kinds of surface patterning nano-hard film had perfect anti-friction property under all test loads.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate two-dimensional outer totalistic cellular automata (2D-OTCA) rules other than the Game of Life rule for image scrambling. This paper presents a digital image scrambling (DIS) technique based on 2D-OTCA for improving the scrambling degree. The comparison of scrambling performance and computational effort of proposed technique with existing CA-based image scrambling techniques is also presented.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a DIS technique based on 2D-OTCA with von Neumann neighborhood (NvN) is proposed. Effect of three important cellular automata (CA) parameters on gray difference degree (GDD) is analyzed: first the OTCA rules, afterwards two different boundary conditions and finally the number of CA generations (k) are tested. The authors selected a random sample of gray-scale images from the Berkeley Segmentation Data set and Benchmark, BSDS300 (www2.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Projects/CS/vision/bsds/) for the experiments. Initially, the CA is setup with a random initial configuration and the GDD is computed by testing all OTCA rules, one by one, for CA generations ranging from 1 to 10. A subset of these tested rules produces high GDD values and shows positive correlation with the k values. Subsequently, this sample of rules is used with different boundary conditions and applied to the sample image data set to analyze the effect of these boundary conditions on GDD. Finally, in order to compare the scrambling performance of the proposed technique with the existing CA-based image scrambling techniques, the authors use same initial CA configuration, number of CA generations, k=10, periodic boundary conditions and the same test images.

Findings

The experimental results are evaluated and analyzed using GDD parameter and then compared with existing techniques. The technique results in better GDD values with 2D-OTCA rule 171 when compared with existing techniques. The CPU running time of the proposed algorithm is also considerably small as compared to existing techniques.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors focused on using von Neumann neighborhood (NvN) to evolve the CA for image scrambling. The use of NvN reduced the computational effort on one hand, and reduced the CA rule space to 1,024 as compared to about 2.62 lakh rule space available with Moore neighborhood (NM) on the other. The results of this paper are based on original analysis of the proposed work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the operation and maintenance practices within wind power applications and to clarify practical needs as gaps between researchers and practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper collects, categorizes, and analyzes the published literature of both researchers and practitioners systematically.

Findings

The paper defines significant issues in operation and maintenance of wind energy related to: site and seasonal asset disturbances; stakeholders’ requirements trade‐off; dependability and asset deterioration challenges; diagnostic, prognostic and information and communication technologies (ICTs) applications; and maintenance optimization models. Within each category, the gaps and further research needs have been extracted with respect to both an academic and industrial perspective.

Practical implications

The use of wind energy is growing rapidly and the associated practices related to maintenance and asset management are still lacking. Therefore, the literature review of operation and maintenance is a necessity to uncover the holistic issues and interrelationships of what has so far been published as detailed and fragmented topics to specific issues. Wind energy assets represent modern renewable energy assets which are affected by environmental disturbances, rapid technological development, rapid scaling‐up processes, the stochastic and dynamic nature of operations and degradation, the integrity and interoperability of system‐to‐support.

Originality/value

The paper provides a comprehensive review of research contributions and industrial development efforts. That will be useful to the life cycle stakeholders in both academia and industry in understanding the maintenance problem and solution space within the wind energy context.
