Presents over sixty abstracts summarising the 1999 Employment Research Unit annual conference held at the University of Cardiff. Abstract

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at investigating the heat transfer characteristics of a nonsquare enclosure when hydrodynamic resistance is altered discontinuously along its inner surface. Particularly, it focuses on investigating how several essential factors collaboratively influence the natural convection, including the Rayleigh number (Ra), the aspect ratio (AR), the nanoparticle volume fraction (ϕ) and the locations of changing hydrodynamic resistance.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve these objectives, an L-shaped enclosure of various AR is adopted, while zero local shear resistance is applied and modeled by stress-free (SF) patches of four distinct arrangements (corresponding to Cases 1–4). The nanofluid is modeled by Buongiorno’s two-phase model. The effects are explored using an in-house numerical framework based on a hybrid lattice Boltzmann-finite difference method with the total variation minimization scheme.

Findings

The results show that when Ra is sufficiently large, i.e. Ra = 105, SF patches can generally enhance the heat transfer performance regardless of other factors. However, the ways of achieving those enhancements are different, which mainly depend on the arrangement of the SF patches and AR but are nearly independent of ϕ. The maximum improvement of heat transfer can be achieved in Case 3 with AR = 0.6, Ra = 105 and ϕ = 0.04, where the averaged Nusselt number is enhanced by 8.89%.

Originality/value

This study presents a new scenario where the SF patches of various arrangements are applied to enhance the nanofluid natural convection of a nonsquared enclosure, and it reveals how the improvement is achieved and cooperatively affected by several important factors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop new semi-empirical heat transfer correlations for turbulent flow of liquid metals in the tubes, and then to compare these correlations with the experimental data. The Prandtl and Reynolds numbers can vary in the ranges: 0.0001 ≤ Pr ≤ 0.1 and 3000 ≤ Re ≤ 106.

Design/methodology/approach

The energy conservation equation averaged by Reynolds was integrated using the universal velocity profile determined experimentally by Reichardt for the turbulent tube flow and four different models for the turbulent Prandtl number. Turbulent heat transfer in the circular tube was analyzed for a constant heat flux at the inner surface. Some constants in different models for the turbulent Prandtl number were adjusted to obtain good agreement between calculated and experimentally obtained Nusselt numbers. Subsequently, new correlations for the Nusselt number as a function of a Peclet number was proposed for different models of the turbulent Prandtl number.

Findings

The inclusion of turbulent Prandtl number greater than one and the experimentally determined velocity profile of the fluid in the tube while solving the energy conservation equation improved the compatibility of calculated Nusselt numbers, with Nusselt numbers determined experimentally. The correlations proposed in the paper have a sound theoretical basis and give Nusselt number values that are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Research limitations/implications

Heat transfer correlations proposed in this paper were derived assuming a constant heat flux at the inner surface of the tube. However, they can also be used for a constant wall temperature, as for the turbulent flow (Re > 3,000), the relative difference between the Nusselt number for uniform wall heat flux and uniform wall temperature is very low.

Originality/value

Unified, systematic approach to derive correlations for the Nusselt number for liquid metals was proposed in the paper. The Nusselt number was obtained from the solution of the energy conservation equation using the universal velocity profile and eddy diffusivity determined experimentally, and various models for the turbulent Prandtl number. Four different relationships for the Nusselt number proposed in the paper were compared with the experimental data.

Abstract

Executive compensation packages are often valued in an inconsistent manner: while employee stock options (ESOs) are typically valued ex‐ante, i.e., before uncertain ties are resolved, cash bonuses are valued ex‐post, i.e., by discounting the realized cash grants. Such a lack of consistency can, potentially, distort empirical results. A related, yet mostly overlooked, problem is that when ex‐post valuation is used pay‐performance measures cannot be well defined. Consistent use of ex‐ante valuation for all components of a compensation package would simultaneously resolve both of these problems and provide a natural framework for the analysis of agency problems. In this paper, we perform ex‐ante valuation of cash bonus contracts as if the executive’s performance were measured by the company stock price, demonstrate how the shape of the bonus contract influences the executive’s attitude toward risk, and study the pay‐performance sensitiv ty of such contracts. We commence by demonstrating that a typical executive bonus contract with a linear incentive zone has a pay off structure equivalent to a portfolio of standard and binary European call options so that the ex‐ante contract value is given by the linear combination of Black and Scholes call and binary call prices, with the strike prices at the boundary points of the incentive zone. Assuming that a risk neutral executive can choose the level of stock price volatility by selecting a set of projects at origination, we show that bonus contract terms can dramatically affect the executive’s risk taking behavior and pay performance incentives. Our results are extended to bonus contracts with non‐linear incentive zones, and performance share contracts with vesting risk.

Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.
