Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to determine whether TAMS Analyzer and Viewshare are viable free and open source software data sharing and creation tools for those with limited funding and technological skills.
Design/methodology/approach
The participant observer method was used to collect experiential evidence while applying the tools to a collection of text-, image-, and video-based digital cultural records.
Findings
TAMS Analyzer was found to be a low barrier to entry tool for those with coding and qualitative data analysis experience. Those with general experience will be able to create datasets with the support of manuals and tutorials, while those with limited experience may find it difficult to use. Viewshare was found to be a low barrier to entry tool for sharing data online, and accessible for all skill levels.
Research limitations/implications
TAMS Analyzer supports Mac and Linux platforms only, so a low-cost software recommendation was made for those in Windows environments.
Practical implications
Librarians can use these tools to address data access gaps while promoting library digital collections.
Social implications
With a greater understanding of data tools, librarians can be advisors, collaborators, agents for data culture, and relevant participants in digital humanities scholarship.
Originality/value
The research evaluates both the capabilities of the tools and the barriers to using or accessing them, which are often neglected. The paper addresses a need in the literature for greater scrutiny of tools that are a critical component of the data ecology, and will further assist librarians when connecting scholars to tools of inquiry in an environment with limited funding and technical support.

Abstract
Purpose
This case study aims to evaluate Omeka.net, the hosted Web publishing exhibit tool, as a low-cost and technology-friendly platform encouraging dynamic academic and non-academic communities to collaborate, explore and contribute to a genre film festival resource.
Design/methodology/approach
A literature review established six variables to assess Omeka.net as a viable platform for libraries seeking to administer a resource-focused website adhering to information standards with limited budgets, training and technical or institutional support. The variables identified were cost; website management; content building and management; communities, engagement and collaboration; exploration and knowledge building; and website support.
Findings
Omeka.net supports many activities with notable functions for website administration; collection building; media formats; collaboration; metadata; social media; user contributions; technical support; and the creation of simple, custom pages. While templates for page layouts offer a surprising amount of choices, some options are limited. Currently, interactive and exploratory items cannot be embedded into website pages.
Originality/value
This paper discusses Omeka.net, the hosted version of the exhibit tool offered by Omeka, as a platform to encourage cross-sector collaboration for digital humanities projects, addressing a gap in the literature which focuses on Omeka.org, the open-source software version installed by libraries with access to servers and technical staff.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to provide examples of how partnerships can be used to build innovative digital collections.
Design/methodology/approach
This article explores multiple aspects of Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) Walker Library’s partnerships with the Center for Historic Preservation and MTSU’s graduate program in public history. Specific topics covered include pairing interpretive essays with groups of highly relevant images to engage students, incorporating responsive design to encourage use of mobile devices and creating an interactive map that links locations to digital content.
Findings
By strengthening existing partnerships and proactively seeking new opportunities, libraries that do not have unique primary source collections can take a leading role in publishing digital history collections. Historians have been vital to the success of the Library’s digital projects, particularly those that incorporate multiple layers of historical context.
Originality/value
This is one of the few articles about digital collections to cover responsive Web design (particularly within CONTENTdm), partnerships between libraries and public history academic programs and the value of multiple layers of historical context (metadata, essays matched with images and lesson plans).

Abstract
What is the future for retail software? David Freestone's view is that suppliers will continue to orientate their software towards specific merchandise areas and types of retailer, instead of trying to be all embracing. And more retailers will make their own systems available to others.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to provide two real examples to inspire librarians to use modern techniques for data visualization.
Design/methodology/approach
Two interactive applications were created for visualizing longitudinal and geographical data collected by libraries.
Findings
R language has high versatility and flexibility in visualizing various types and hierarchy of data under a prevalent Web framework. The two demonstrations provide workflows from data extractions to visualization products.
Originality/value
Proper visualization assists librarians and administrators to understand data better and gain more insightful prospects. As a result, more scientific decisions can be made for improving libraries operation.

Abstract
Discusses the effect of electronic commerce on the management of the supply chain. Particular emphasis is placed on electronic data interchange (EDI). EDI has in the past been confined to larger companies. However, as more companies are becoming switched on to the benefits, so it is becoming a prerequisite for all businesses. The benefits and costs associated with electronic commerce are highlighted using results from a survey and follow‐up cases. Analysis showed that the main benefit is faster transactions. Additionally, better co‐operation between trading partners, reduced administration costs and improved accuracy resulted. The impact of the Internet on electronic commerce, including possible future directions, is then discussed. The paper closes by proposing a framework to assist companies with the change towards introducing electronic commerce into the supply chain.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper describes how the content management system (CMS) Omeka supports the representation and presentation of the National Agricultural Library’s (NAL’s) digital exhibits, including some observations on its strengths and weaknesses. It also looks at Omeka’s major features through a theoretical lens of exhibit orientation that provides another way to assess it as a digital content tool.
Design/methodology/approach
The case study method was selected to review four comparable exhibits from the same institution. The Omeka software was evaluated through a lens of exhibit design that includes two orientations (object vs information) and multiple goals (object identification and display, engagement, interpretation and education).
Findings
Omeka is a valuable tool for digital exhibits because of its strength in knowledge representation through a standard metadata scheme, the ability to group items that have some aspect in common such as author or topic, and its support of narrative exhibits incorporating text and images. Omeka needs some additional support, however, to fulfill more complex goals such as user engagement, object interpretation and user education.
Originality/value
The paper grounds the examination of Omeka within a theoretical framework of exhibit orientation that enriches its observations and conclusions.
