Abstract

Analyses, in depth, the problem of overlap between the areas of different television companies, the effect on this of the new UHF television network, and the implications from a marketing viewpoint. Based mainly on the results of research carried out by the author in the summer of 1969, and reported elsewhere in greater detail. Focuses on the marketing implications of the existing and future overlap areas between ITV companies. Couples some projects of future overlaps made on the basis of existing information and discusses the difference between UHF and VHF frequencies. Summarises that this analysis has shown an area definition is needed which is more suited to the needs of marketing and enabling the more efficient use of resources.

Abstract

Purpose

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) uses different detection technologies and integrated library systems (ILS) at its four libraries located at different sites. Hence, ubiquitous data management system is required in the four libraries to enable real-time data sharing and tracking among the libraries. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Proof of concept is used to verify the performance of integration between different detection technologies including barcode, high frequency (HF) and ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) as well as Integrated Library Management Utility (ILMU) and Koha ILSs. Five pilot tests are performed to investigate the speed of the borrowing and returning transactions, the efficiency of security gate to detect non-borrowed items, and the reliability of the ubiquitous data management system.

Findings

The HF RFID technology and the proprietary library system have been used in many libraries. The current study proves that the integration of the UHF RFID technology and the Koha open-source ILS, which is named as Total Open-Source Library Automation Solution, can be a novel solution and can serve as a guide for other libraries.

Originality/value

In the current phase of library data management system, it is common to integrate various technologies in improving the efficiency of the library system. But, the combination of Koha with UHF RFID into a single ILS for intra-library automation system has not been proven. This shows the importance of the proposed proven proof of concept that proves such integration is suitable to be implemented at USM libraries and other libraries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to put forward a Ultra-high Frequency Radio Frequency Identification (UHF-RFID) data model construction scheme for university libraries, hoping to realize the opening, uniform, compatible and interoperable RFID application between different libraries and manufacturers.

Design/methodology/approach

This article uses the practical application needs of university libraries as the starting point, and proposes the UHF-RFID data model construction scheme for university libraries based on the study of applicable standards, such as ISO 28560.

Findings

Based on practical application demand of university libraries and some international standards, the paper puts forward an UHF-RFID data model construction scheme for university libraries. First, the scheme explains and defines six user data elements different from ISO28560: version, owner library identifiers, temporary item location, subject, International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) and International Standard Book Number (ISBN). Furthermore, different encoding rules for electronic product code (EPC) data area and user data area are designed to achieve maximum work efficiency.

Practical implications

This paper tries to bring forward a set of referential UHF-RFID data model standards for university libraries. Hopefully, this standard will offer uniform data models for university libraries to comply with, integrate the disordered market and further make the opening, unified, compatible and interoperable RFID application possible.

Originality/value

Although there are several formally published RFID standard documents, they are primarily designed for high frequency RFID technology. Concerning UHF-RFID technology, there are still no internationally unified data model standards. Hence, this paper brings forward the UHF-RFID data model construction scheme for university libraries.

Purpose

The last decade has seen increasing advocacy for, and interest in the use of white space in the broadcasting bands by providers of wireless broadband services. This paper aims to discuss the scope in Australia for “symbiotic” and “invasive” white space devices to operate in the UHF band after digital switchover and speculate about longer term trends.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors draw from their analysis of recent regulatory decisions to explain how the parameters established for channel planning naturally conduce to the development of large white spaces. They then identify emerging opportunities for white space usage in the reduced UHF band allocated to digital television services as well as in nearby guard bands.

Findings

The article's analysis suggests that there is considerable scope for white space devices to operate in Australia – even in the context of a reduced UHF band following analog switch off. Furthermore, the authors argue that the development of complementary business models could see off any perceived conflict between intensive white space usage and the long‐term benefit of both broadcasters and telecommunications operators.

Practical implications

It is timely for proponents of white space usage to establish regulatory arrangements that will allow intensive use of those white spaces. Current FCC proposals to base the regulatory framework on spectrum co‐sharing between broadcasters and white space broadband providers may lead to similar, yet distinct, opportunities in the USA as well.

Originality/value

There is a surprising paucity of published information worldwide regarding white space regulation. This article provides an in‐depth discussion of the main parameters driving white space opportunity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a novel totally passive, wireless temperature sensor tag based on ultra high-frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The temperature-sensing functionality is enabled by using distilled water embedded in the tag antenna substrate. The novel sensor tag is designed to provide wireless temperature readings comparable to a commercial thermocouple thermometer even in environments with high levels of interference, such as reflections. The structure of the novel sensor tag is aimed to increase its usability by minimizing user-created errors and to simplify the measurement procedure.

Design/methodology/approach

The sensor tag is based on a dual port sensing concept in which two ports are used to obtain sensor readings. By utilizing two ports instead of one, the effects of environmental interference, tag-reader antenna orientation and distance can be effectively minimized. Two alternative methods of acquiring the sensor reading from the operating characteristics of the two ports are presented and discussed.

Findings

Temperature measurements in practical scenarios show that by utilizing the dual port sensing concept, the developed tag produces temperature readings wirelessly which are comparable to readings from a commercial thermocouple thermometer.

Research limitations/implications

The concept of dual port sensing was shown and two alternative methods on extracting sensor readings from the differences in the port operating characteristics were introduced and discussed. In this paper, the dual port sensing concept is utilized in creating a temperature sensor tag; however, the same concept can be utilized in a variety of passive wireless sensors based on UHF RFID technology. This enables a new approach in designing accurate, easy to use and easily integrable passive sensors. The dual port sensing concept is in its early stages of development; its accuracy could be improved by developing more advanced data post-processing techniques.

Practical implications

The accuracy of a passive dual port UHF RFID-enabled temperature sensor tag is proven to be sufficient in many applications. This indicates that other sensor types utilizing the dual port sensing concept can reach high levels of accuracy as well. Furthermore, the passive RFID-enabled sensors based on the dual port sensing concept are superior in usability versus sensor tags equipped only with a single port. Therefore, dual port sensing concept in passive UHF RFID-enabled sensor tags could make such sensors more attractive commercially and lead to truly widespread ubiquitous sensing and computing.

Originality/value

This paper presents a novel passive, wireless temperature sensor tag for UHF RFID systems. The sensor tag utilizes a new structure which allows tight integration of two ports and two tag antennas. The accuracy of the developed tag is confirmed throughout measurements and it is found comparable to the accuracy of commercial thermometers in practical measurement scenarios. Moreover, the paper presents a dual port sensing concept and two readout methods based on the concept which are aimed to increase the accuracy and usability of all kinds of UHF RFID-enabled sensor tags.

Abstract

Purpose

In manufacturing environments, mobile radio frequency identification (RFID) robots need to quickly identify and collect various types of passive tag and active tag sensor data. The purpose of this paper is to design a robot system compatible with ultra high frequency (UHF) band passive and active RFID applications and to propose a new anti-collision protocol to improve identification efficiency for active tag data collection.

Design/methodology/approach

A new UHF RFID robot system based on a cloud platform is designed and verified. For the active RFID system, a grouping reservation–based anti-collision algorithm is proposed in which an inventory round is divided into reservation period and polling period. The reservation period is divided into multiple sub-slots. Grouped tags complete sub-slot by randomly transmitting a short reservation frame. Then, in the polling period, the reader accesses each tag by polling. When tags’ reply collision occurs, the reader tries to re-query collided tags once, and the pre-reply tags avoid collisions through random back-off and channel activity detection.

Findings

The proposed algorithm achieves a maximum theoretical system throughput of about 0.94, and very few tag data frame transmissions overhead. The capture effect and channel activity detection in physical layer can effectively improve system throughput and reduce tag data transmission.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors design and verify the UHF band passive and active hybrid RFID robot architecture based on cloud collaboration. And, the proposed anti-collision algorithm would improve active tag data collection speed and reduce tag transmission overhead in complex manufacturing environments.

A problem is usually a result of “changes”. However, not all changes are the cause of problems. The search for the cause of a problem narrows down to the search for that change which should produce the precise effect observed through some area of distinction. This change may consist of several elements and conditions taken together as a complex change, which can produce the exact effect observed. This change will be found through analysing the facts used in specifying the problem. The process of analysis requires co‐operative brain‐storming among different parties concerned. Analysis of these facts is thus the crux of problem solving. Outlines an effective method of solving problems in manufacturing and demonstrates its success with practical case studies from Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and the UK.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss the effectiveness of the European Union (EU) at World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRCs) by comparing EU objectives prior to and outcomes of recent WRCs.

Design/methodology/approach

A thematic analysis of qualitative data extracted from documents is conducted. The effectiveness of the EU is discussed by using the concepts of agenda-setting and coalition-building, borrowed from international relations literature.

Findings

A clear conclusion on EU effectiveness could not be drawn based on the degree of match between EU objectives and WRC outcomes. Other factors need to be included in the analysis, such as relevance of the EU’s participation at WRCs to the EU member states and availability and allocation of EU resources to the various stages of the WRC process.

Research limitations/implications

Further research is encouraged to investigate the role of the EU at WRCs. In particular, interviews with experts involved in the WRC process may help gather relevant information on EU relevance and EU resource availability and allocation.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to existing research on international radio spectrum regulation by drawing attention to the role of the EU as an international actor.

THE operational role of the Harrier requires the installation of a comprehensive range of communications and radio navigation aid equipment. VHF/UHF equipment is required for airfield and enroute communications and for liaison with other aircraft. Tac/VHF equipment is required for liaison purposes with land vehicles, and forward command posts, while HF equipment is needed for long range air to ground, or ground to ground communications with rear command areas during cab rank operation. TACAN installation is required to provide short range navigation information derived from a ground station or airborne tanker aircraft, and this data can be used to supplement the Inertial Navigation and Attack System (INAS) moving map display or as a self contained aid. IFF equipment is needed for identification purposes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is threefold: to present internet of things (IoT)-based cyber-physical system (CPS) architecture framework to facilitate the integration of IoT and CPS; to implement an IoT-based CPS prototype based on the architecture framework for a PL application scenario of in a case study; and to devise evaluation methods and conduct experimental evaluations on an IoT-based CPS prototype.

Design/methodology/approach

The design research method, case study, emulation experiment method, and cost-benefit analysis are applied in this research. An IoT-based CPS architecture framework is proposed, and followed by the development of prototype system and testbed platform. Then, the emulation and experimental evaluation of IoT-based CPS are conducted on the testbed, and the experimental results are analyzed.

Findings

The emulation experiment results show that the proposed IoT-based CPS outperforms current barcode-based system regarding labor cost, efficiency, and operational adaptiveness. The evaluation of the IoT-based CPS prototype indicates significant improvements in PL tasks and reduced part inventory under a dynamic changing shop-floor environment.

Practical implications

The case study shows that the proposed architecture framework and prototype system can be applied to many discrete manufacturing industries, such as automobile, airplane, bicycle, home appliance, and electronics.

Originality/value

The proposed IoT-based CPS is among the first to address the need to integrate IoT and CPS for PL applications, and to conduct experimental evaluations and cost-benefit analysis of adopting IoT-based CPS for PL. This paper also contributes to the IoT research by using diverse research methods to offer broader insights into understanding IoT and CPS.
