Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to discuss the possibility that Hyperloop using air levitation technology would create a revolution in the future industry of transportation. It also analyses the financing dimension in bringing Hyperloop technology towards full-scale commercialisation.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses a case study of SpaceX Hyperloop. The analyses if Hyperloop would bring about a paradigmatic shift in the transportation industry are based on the classical economic theories of technology S-curves (Utterback and Abernathy, 1975; Fisher and Pry, 1971) and Schumpeter’s model of economic development (Schumpeter, 1939, 1967). The three factors influencing a paradigmatic change (a shift in technoeconomic paradigm) according to Freeman and Perez (1988) are also explored.
Findings
The analyses of findings have shown that Hyperloop has not yet met three factors influencing a paradigmatic change. However, the Hyperloop technology has the potential to create a new market of mass transportation. In terms of technology financing, SpaceX needs the right financing infrastructure – corporate venture arm, the crowdfunding platform, initial coin offering, as well as debt and equity financing to accelerate the process of commercialisation. As the project moves forward, Hyperloop technology would create a market for itself (innovation to create the demand and not demand to create innovation).v
Originality/value
Although the body of literature on technology management is already voluminous, there has been a scarcity of past research devoted to elucidating the technology disruption and technology financing. This research study has applied the concepts of technology S-curves to better understand if SpaceX Hyperloop would bring about a paradigm shift or revolution in the future of the transportation industry. The research findings would help fill an identified knowledge gap in the body of research in technology disruption and financing.

Purpose
This paper aims to set out a vision of the advent of autonomous electric vehicles (AEV), piloted by artificial intelligence and serviced by other “intelligent” machines, a scenario that poses vast implications for business strategy in many industries.
Design/methodology/approach
Given the speed with which business leaders today must assess and react to the business risks and opportunities engendered by breakthrough technological change, their plans to navigate an autonomous electric vehicle-based transportation future can benefit from a scenario map to the roadblocks and the richest prospects.
Findings
Self-driving electric cars and trucks, which are expected to transform the transportation landscape over the next decade. A smart charging grid is a critical technology development.
Practical implications
Business opportunities to transform ground transport in areas such as operations and supply chain management are significant as well, particularly with unsupervised AEVs, which could slash labor costs and transport times.
Social implications
AEVs are expected to free up more than 30 billion hours per year in the U.S. alone currently spent driving, sitting in traffic or searching for a parking space.
Originality/value

Initially there is discussion of what constitutes a developing country and how airlines activities interact with development processes. It is a broad view which compares and contrasts the varying paths civil aviation has taken within different countries and internationally. It offers some insights as to why airlines are where we are today and as to what the future may hold for developing nations.

Purpose
In recent years, railway systems worldwide have faced challenges such as the modernization of engineering projects, efficient management of intelligent digital railway equipment, rapid growth in passenger and freight transport demands, customized transport services and ubiquitous transport safety. The transformation toward intelligent digital transformation in railways has emerged as an effective response to the formidable challenges confronting the railway industry, thereby becoming an inevitable global trend in railway development.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper, therefore, conducts a comprehensive analysis of the current state of global railway intelligent digital transformation, focusing on the characteristics and applications of intelligent digital transformation technology. It summarizes and analyzes relevant technologies and applicable scenarios in the realm of railway intelligent digital transformation, theoretically elucidating the development process of global railway intelligent digital transformation and, in practice, providing guidance and empirical examples for railway intelligence and digital transformation.
Findings
Digital and intelligent technologies follow a wave-like pattern of continuous iterative evolution, progressing from the early stages, to a period of increasing attention and popularity, then to a phase of declining interest, followed by a resurgence and ultimately reaching a mature stage.
Originality/value
The results offer reference and guidance to fully leverage the opportunities presented by the latest wave of the digitalization revolution, accelerate the overall upgrade of the railway industry and promote global collaborative development in railway intelligent digital transformation.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the significant structural forms and influencing factors that shape the adoption of technology advances and innovations in society, generally and the property sector specifically.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper uses action learning and interviews, literature review, thought experiment and comparative/conceptual/qualitative analysis.
Findings
For two centuries, the property sector was essentially “exempt from” and essentially a passive by standing in the industrialization and innovations that transformed the economy. In recent decades, the circumstances changed dramatically; the property sector is rapidly making up for the lost time.
Practical implications
The property market participants who long relied upon, while many property market participants prospered in relying upon long established practices – in some ways more reminiscent of a medieval guild than a contemporary long-standing practice with little attention to, or need to, be concerned about change forces – those circumstances have profoundly changed. Understanding the forces leading to that change and the implications of that change is essential for effective property involvements in the twenty-first century.
Social implications
Whereas the property sector largely was dominated by a product-focused supplier mentality, the major change forces are shifting more and more access, power to consumers. The result is that society shall have more robust and more user-oriented offerings of property goods and services.
Originality/value
This research distilling the results of the featured keynote address to the London 2000 Cutting Edge Conference provides, and is, the first thoughtful assessment, combining both rigor and relevance to address these profoundly important developments that are shaping and informing the property sector in the twenty-first century.

Abstract
The UK road network faces critical problems over the next decade. Severe road congestion made worse by ever increasing vehicle numbers and consequent requirements for road maintenance and repair form a vicious circle, while provision of new roads remains an increasingly expensive and environmentally unacceptable solution. But as billions of pounds are wasted annually in traffic jams, air and sound pollution continue to affect our health and pedestrian safety and emergency service access suffer, we must all recognize that to prevent future chaos actions must be taken now. Some of these measures may be unpalatable to a nation dedicated to the motor car. The use of dedicated electronic systems including route guidance, incident avoidance, in‐vehicle signing, head up displays and anticollision radar have the potential to revolutionize every facet of road transportation, and are already starting to provide drivers with new standards of safety, comfort, security, reliability and efficiency. However to combat fully the growing crisis threatening our road system radical solutions must be sought to offer answers for the better management of the UK's road infrastructure for the next decade and beyond.

Abstract
This chapter introduces how the built environment and walking are connected. It looks at the interrelationships within the built environment, and how those are changing given planning and policy efforts to facilitate increased walking for both leisure activity and commuting. Using a broad review and case-based approach, the chapter examines this epistemological development of walking and the built environment over time, reviews the connections, policies and design strategies and emerging issues. The chapter shows many cases of cities which are creating a more walkable environment. It also reveals that emerging issues related to technology and autonomous vehicles, vision zero and car-free cities, and increased regional policy may play a continued role in shaping the built environment for walking. This dialogue provides both a core underpinning and a future vision for how the built environment can continue to influence and respond to pedestrians in shaping a more walkable world.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the causal relationship between smart transportation technology innovation and green transportation efficiency.
Design/methodology/approach
A comprehensive framework is used in this paper to assess the level of green transportation efficiency in China based on the instrumental variable – generalized method of moments model, followed by an examination of the impact of innovation in smart transportation technology on green transportation efficiency. Additionally, their non-linear relationship is explored, as are their important moderating and mediating effects.
Findings
The findings indicate that, first, the efficiency of green transportation is significantly enhanced by innovation in smart transportation technology, which means that investing in such technologies contributes to improving green transportation efficiency. Second, in areas where green transportation efficiency is initially low, smart transportation technology innovation exerts a particularly potent influence in driving green transportation efficiency, which underscores the pivotal role of such innovation in bolstering efficiency when it is lacking. Third, the relationship between smart transportation technology innovation and green transportation efficiency is moderated by information and communication technology, and the influence of smart transportation technology innovation on green transportation efficiency is realized through an increase in energy efficiency and carbon emissions efficiency.
Originality/value
Advancing green transportation is essential in establishing a low-carbon trajectory within the transportation sector.
