The context of skill creation and its development is fundamental to sustainable economic growth with vertical improvement in well-being. Now when it comes to the case of less developed countries, the implication of international trade in skill formation takes an idiosyncratic shape so far as our concern: a dearth of skill education and lack of evenness in access to skill education due to the underlying rampant and pronounced economic inequality (i.e., inequality in income and wealth) among people as what is quite typical. Against this backdrop, this chapter seeks to develop a general equilibrium model in line with Jones (1965 & 1971) and Beladi and Marjit (1996) to address how leveraging of foreign trade through technological modernization of exports may work toward skill formation in less developed economies with technological dualism, informalization, and disguised unemployment. Besides, this chapter brings to glare how benefit of such modernization toward skill development stands out to be weighed against a potential worsening of distributive justice in terms of rise in wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers. Moreover, this chapter seeks to overhaul the implication of liberalization of labor market in terms of dilution of minimum wage standard for human development. Thus, the bottom line is that comes up here forth that export modernization in name of improving external competitiveness and thereof attaining effective trade openness can promote skilled human but only risking an exacerbation of wage inequality.

Issues related to economic development and growth are oft discussed to illustrate the health of a nation. However, such development is constrained by the inequality parameter of the representative society. Again, economic fluctuations arising from several crises may hinder the representative nation from getting on a smooth path to development. Now, augmentation of crises along with the presence of inequality may trigger economic vulnerabilities, leading to unsustainable economic development. Against this backdrop, we initially frame a theoretical model to capture the above-mentioned issues and try to derive plausible economic interpretations for the same. To verify the same in a more robust manner, we consider a panel of 30 developing countries from Africa, spanning the time period 1980–2020. Both the health status and the education status of our panel of countries are used to explore the sustainability issue in the presence of income inequality. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) own and control technological resources and capabilities that make them critical actors in accelerating the transition toward net zero. Even beyond the energy sector, stakeholders are putting increasing pressure on MNEs to reduce the carbon intensity of their operations, that is, to improve their carbon performance. While there is unambiguous evidence that national climate policy is a critical catalyst for long-term carbon performance improvements, there is limited research on how MNEs’ carbon strategies react to climate policies. This chapter reviews the concepts, drivers, and strategies connected to carbon performance in the broader sustainability and management literature to clarify potential complementarities to international business (IB). The authors then highlight how MNEs will face increasing institutional complexity along two dimensions: (1) the structural diversity of institutional environments and (2) institutional dynamism, primarily reflected by public policy. The proposed conceptual framework maps these two dimensions to national and subnational levels, and the authors present two data sources that allow the quantitative analysis of country differences in the diversity and dynamism of national climate policy. The authors conclude that there are ample opportunities for IB researchers to explore MNEs’ strategic reactions to climate policy and to inform policymakers about the consequences of national climate policy in the global economy.

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) in the agri-food sector are continuously transforming their global value chains (GVCs) to address sustainable development challenges of food security (SDG2) and climate change (SDG13). However, the central role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in (re)creating GVCs across multilevel stakeholders through innovative approaches to solve sustainability challenges remains under investigated. This explorative study investigates how international NGOs influence the transformation of large-scale industrial animal agriculture to a more sustainable (cell-based) agri-food GVC. The authors conducted a case study on the Good Food Institute (GFI), an international NGO, that has been an active player in the transition to alternative sources of protein to solve animal-based agriculture sustainability issues. The results show that an international NGO can contribute to the transition to a more sustainable GVC and can enhance the GVC’s innovation capabilities.

The present chapter discusses evolution, definitions, dimensions, capabilities, and the present state of the art of digital supply chain management (DSCM). The objective of the chapter is to offer a detailed understanding of DSCM, by shedding light on its historical development, exploring its multipronged definitions, and highlighting its core dimensions and capabilities in the contemporary business landscape. The evolution of DSCM appears as a central theme, rooted in the background of industrial revolutions. It starts by relooking at the First Industrial Revolution (IR) with its mechanization and steam power, progresses through the Second IR with electrification and mass production, and arrives at the Third IR, characterized by the rise of computers and the internet. The pivoting transition into the Fourth IR, also called Industry 4.0, marks the start of DSCM with its fusion of digital technologies (DTs) in the supply chain (SC) processes. Analysis of key definitions of DSCMs unveils their role as an enabler of SC collaboration, customer-centric nature, having overarching reliance on DTs. Moreover, the chapter explores the core dimensions of DSCM, exposing its ability to improve SC resilience, sustainability, visibility, efficiency, and agility. These capabilities stem from seamlessly woven DT developments into SC: artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), and advanced analytics. The chapter concludes by highlighting the present state of the art in DSCM, reflecting its indispensable role in the contemporary turbulent business dynamics. In short, this chapter offers a synthesized view of DSCM's definitions, dimensions, evolution, capabilities, and present status within the larger context of supply chain management (SCM) literature.

Alain Verbeke is one of the world’s leading thinkers on international business (IB) and globalization, a renowned scholar and educator who contributes to creating a better global business environment by addressing some of today’s most critical challenges. He was one of the first scholars to advance a theoretically rigorous and practically significant perspective on international corporate social responsibility (CSR). Verbeke’s work on international CSR is particularly impactful because it is rooted in IB theory and based on a realistic set of assumptions about the behavior of managers, policymakers, and other market and nonmarket stakeholders. In this chapter, the authors apply theoretical principles central to Verbeke’s research – most notably behavioral assumptions of bounded rationality and bounded reliability – to analyze businesses’ and societies’ pace of progress in relation to stated environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. The authors argue that bounded rationality and reliability challenges create misalignment between stated/imposed commitments toward ESG performance, and economic actors’ ability to deliver on these commitments. The authors discuss examples of such misalignment, focusing on tensions among stakeholders, between stakeholder organizations and firms, and within firms. The authors propose that to be relevant for policy and practice, the sustainability research should be based on realistic microfoundational assumptions.

One of the fundamental objectives of adopting digital supply chain (DSC) is to uplift the performance of an organization. Although a wide variety of literature confirms the impact of DSC on performance, it is hard to explore as to which dimensions of the performance is affected by DSC and how much. This chapter undertakes discussion on the impact of DSC on the various organizational performance indicators. The chapter also denotes some major key performance indicators (KPIs) that organization can track to gauge the impact of DSC on performance. A brief discussion on the challenges related to the development, adoption, and continuation of KPIs is also appeared in the later part of the chapter. The chapter concludes by denoting that the utilization of digital technologies (DTs) such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and complex analytics in DSC has prospects for enhancing the operational efficiency, transparency, and agility of a supply chain (SC). Organizations that adopt these DTs have experienced better demand forecasting, reduced time order fulfillment time, and higher levels of consumer satisfaction. Nonetheless, the successful use of DSC requires development and implantation of KPIs regularly.

The current chapter proposes a theoretical framework to assess the sustainability of economic growth in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States. The authors integrate insights from endogenous growth models and consider the unique socioeconomic characteristics of the GCC region to provide a comprehensive and tailored approach to understanding the determinants of economic growth and formulating effective policy measures to foster sustainable development and growth. This chapter highlights the environmental challenges faced by GCC; based on this, the authors suggested indicators to construct a theoretical framework (Economic Growth, Climatic Indicators, Energy Indicators, Social Indicators, and Economic Resources Indicators). The authors propose that policymakers and researchers in GCC States should take these factors into account when devising policies or conducting research aimed at fostering sustainable economic growth. Overall, this chapter presents significant insights for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders involved in promoting the sustainable economic advancement of the GCC States.
