Abstract

A combined experimental and numerical investigation into the fluid flow and heat transfer processes that take place in the spray deposition of tubular preforms is presented. The work is concerned principally with impingement mechanisms at jet diameter to target distances that are large in comparison with previous reported studies. The experimental investigation required the design of a novel heat transfer meter that was capable of resolving the heat transfer coefficient within 2.5 per cent. The experiments gave a new correlation for stagnation heat transfer, similar in form to correlations that have been published for small jet diameter to target distance values. The experiments also showed the presence of skewing of the heat transfer coefficient in the deposition zone due to its tapered nature. A finite volume based model of the deposition chamber was developed and run to compare with the experimental data. This model was found to yield trends similar to those measured experimentally, thus confirming its qualitative capability. However the absolute values of heat transfer coefficient that were computed were significantly lower than measured values. This points to the requirement to consider alternative computing schemes and to investigate the methods of representing the heat transfer mechanisms at the physical boundaries, particularly at the preform surface.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the jet impingement onto a conical heat sink and evaluate the ability of heat transfer enhancement.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical study of the flow and heat transfer of liquid impingement on cone heat sinks was conducted, and transition SST turbulence model was validated and adopted. The flow and thermal performances were investigated with the Reynolds number that ranges from 5,000 to 23,000 and cone angle that ranges from 0° to 70° in four regions.

Findings

Local Nusselt numbers are large, and pressure coefficients drop rapidly near the stagnation point. In the conical bottom edge, a secondary inclined jet was observed, thereby introducing a horseshoe vortex that causes drastic fluctuations in the curves of the flow and heat transfer. The average Nusselt numbers are higher in a conical protuberance than in flat plates in most cases, thus indicating that the heat transfer performance of jet impingement can be improved by a cone heat sink. The maximum increase is 13.6 per cent when the cone angle is 60°, and the Reynolds number is 23,000.

Originality/value

The flow and heat transfer behavior at the bottom edge of the cone heat sink is supplemented. The average heat transfer capacity of different heat transfer radii was evaluated, which provided a basis for the study of cone arrays.

Abstract

Purpose

The probability distribution of major length and aspect ratio (major length/minor length) of wear debris collected from gear oil used in planetary gear drive were analysed and modelled. The paper aims to find an appropriate probability distribution model to forecast the kind of wear particles at different running hour of the machine.

Design/methodology/approach

Used gear oil of the planetary gear box of a slab caster was drained out and charged with a fresh oil of grade (EP-460). Six chronological oil samples were collected at different time interval between 480 and 1,992 h of machine running. The oil samples were filtered to separate wear particles, and microscopic study of wear debris was carried out at 100X magnification. Statistical modelling of wear debris distribution was done using Weibull and exponential probability distribution model. A comparison was studied among actual, Weibull and exponential probability distribution of major length and aspect ratio of wear particles.

Findings

Distribution of major length of wear particle was found to be closer to the exponential probability density function, whereas Weibull probability density function fitted better to distribution of aspect ratio of wear particle.

Originality/value

The potential of the developed model can be used to analyse the distribution of major length and aspect ratio of wear debris present in planetary gear box of slab caster machine.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to explore factors that influence students’ academic performance in the context of physical ergonomics and assess the mediating effect of motivation between lighting, noise, temperature, chair design and students’ performance from the student’s perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was categorised as a correlational study and employed non-contrived and cross-sectional methods to achieve its objectives. The target population was university students aged 18 years old and above enrolled in Malaysia’s higher education institutions. Due to the inaccessibility of the sample frame, convenience sampling, a type of non-probability sampling, was utilised. Data collection was conducted through an online survey primarily distributed among student groups.

Findings

The study’s findings reveal that only two exogenous variables, lighting and noise, directly influence students' performance. Additionally, motivation is a potent and significant factor in shaping students' performance. Motivation is also identified as a mediator in the complex relationship between lighting, noise, temperature and student performance. Surprisingly, although temperature does not directly influence student performance, it indirectly influences performance through motivation.

Originality/value

This study is an original exploration into the intricate factors shaping students' academic performance within the domain of physical ergonomics from a student perspective. The research uniquely investigates the mediating impact of motivation on the relationships between lighting, noise, temperature, seating arrangements and academic outcomes. The findings will contribute novel insights to the existing body of knowledge, offering a distinct perspective on the complex dynamics that influence student learning experiences and performance in educational settings.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the marginal impact of introducing a signal attribute of pasture-raised beef on consumer willingness to pay (WTP) for other independent attributes.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is divided into two steps. The first, qualitative, consisted of investigating the values consumers have regarding beef production. To this end, 52 interviews with Brazilian and US consumers were conducted using laddering. In the second, quantitative, six experiments, (face to face and online) with 267 consumers of beef were performed.

Findings

As a result, the main value found for the Brazilians was security, while for the Americans was self-direction. For consumers, the WTP for animal welfare was the most important in the choice experiments where this information was present.

Originality/value

These findings offer an alternate beef differentiation, enabling it to be sold with higher added value by integrating these.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of online reviews on consumers’ intention to visit restaurants, with the moderating role of involvement.

Design/methodology/approach

The research framework was built on signaling theory, message appeals and involvement theory. To test the proposed framework, three experiments were conducted online with real customer samples. T-tests, ANOVA and SPSS PROCESS macro were used for data analysis.

Findings

The results revealed that online reviews with higher online ratings and emotional appeal led to higher restaurant visit intention. Review appeal significantly moderated the effect of online ratings on restaurant visit intention. Customers with low restaurant involvement were more impacted by emotional comments than by functional comments.

Research limitations/implications

The present study extends our knowledge on the effects of online reviews moderated by levels of customer involvement. By combining signaling theory with involvement theory, it adds value to the literature on customer online behavior, especially in the foodservice context. The present study has limitations that might provide opportunities for future research. It used evaluations (TripAdvisor scores) and only positive reviews (texts), so customers’ intentions considering negative reviews could not be examined. The level of hedonism concerning consumption in restaurants and prior knowledge regarding restaurant reviews was not controlled for. It is possible that the level of hedonism perceived and prior review knowledge may moderate the customers’ intention to visit the restaurant.

Practical implications

The present study shows the importance of online comments for the promotion of restaurants that have low evaluation scores. It is essential that restaurant owners and managers encourage potential customers by using comments to elaborate on their marketing strategies and promotion. At the same time, they should invite customers to share their emotional experiences, and not just their views on service efficiency (a functional aspect). During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of the internet and mobile devices has become more prominent. Managers could therefore use emotional messages on the restaurant’s website or apps to attract customers with low restaurant involvement. Also, a system to identify the involvement of customers with restaurants could be implemented online or on mobile devices to present specific messages. The present study also recommends the use of online tools as virtual tours, photographs taken from different angles, smiling faces, floor plans and sittings and pre-determined emotional expressions. Also, the restaurant could promote lives on cooking different dishes to motive customer’s interaction and comments. These would help to increase customers’ visit intentions.

Originality/value

This study extends knowledge about the effect of restaurant online reviews (both ratings and appeals) moderated by the level of customer involvement. The present study also adds value to the customer online behavior literature showing that customers with low involvement are more sensitive to emotional content as they use the affective route to process information rather than the central route.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on human resource practices contribution to retail SMEs performance through its role in developing organizational learning capability (OLC).

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional design was adopted, where data were collected from a sample of 214 managers of retail SMEs, utilizing a survey questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The results indicate that incentive reward has the strongest significance on firm performance with a stronger influence on economic performance. Performance appraisal has the greatest effect on system perspective, followed by the impact of employee selection on managerial commitment (MC). MC strongly affects firm performance while openness and experimentation influences satisfaction performance. Additionally, OLC fully mediates the relationship between high-performance human resource management (HRM) practices and firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

It did not include large organizations nor consider other SME contextual variables which may otherwise exert significant impact on OLC.

Practical implications

A profound understanding of distinctive high-performance HRM practices effect on firm performance and the needed employee capabilities that would assist organizations to implement strategies to attain sustainable competitive advantage.

Originality/value

The study advances knowledge on HRM practices among SMEs by proposing that distinctive high-performance HRM practices can leverage OLC to enhance firm performance.
