Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to synthesize knowledge related to performance evaluation of automated construction processes during the planning and execution phases through a theme-based literature classification. The primary research question that is addressed is “How to quantify the performance improvement in automated construction processes?”

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review of papers on automated construction was conducted involving three stages-planning, conducting and reporting. In the planning stage, the purpose of the review is established through key research questions. Then, a four-step process is employed consisting of identification, screening, shortlisting and inclusion of papers. For reporting, observations were critically analysed and categorized according to themes.

Findings

The primary conclusion from this study is that the effectiveness of construction processes can only be benchmarked using realistic simulations. Simulations help to pinpoint the root causes of success or failure of projects that are either already completed or under execution. In automated construction, there are many complex interactions between humans and machines; therefore, detailed simulation models are needed for accurate predictions. One key requirement for simulation is the calibration of the models using real data from construction sites.

Research limitations/implications

This study is based on a review of 169 papers from a database of peer-reviewed journals, within a time span of 50 years.

Originality/value

Gap in research in the area of performance evaluation of automated construction is brought out. The importance of simulation models calibrated with on-site data within a methodology for performance evaluation is highlighted.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper systematically evaluates the existing literature of innovations in freight transport, including all modes, to uncover the key research themes and methodologies employed by researchers to study innovations and their implications in this industry. It analyses the role of transport and the impact of innovations during crises, such as COVID-19.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the innovations in freight transport unravels the pre-requisites of such endeavours in achieving a resilient and sustainable transport network that effectively and efficiently operates during a crisis. The authors performed keyword co-occurrence network (KCON) analysis and research focus parallelship network (RFPN) analysis using BibExcel and Gephi to determine the major resulting research streams in freight transport.

Findings

The RFPN identified five emerging themes: transport operations, technological innovation, transport economics, transport policy and resilience and disaster management. Optimisation and simulation techniques, and more recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) approaches, have been used to model and solve freight transport problems. Automation innovations have also penetrated freight and supply chains. Information and communication technology (ICT)-based innovations have also been found to be effective in building resilient supply chains.

Research limitations/implications

Given the growth of e-commerce during COVID-19 and the resulting logistics demand, along with the need for transporting food and medical emergency products, the role of automation, optimisation, monitoring systems and risk management in the transport industry has become more salient. Transport companies need to improve their operational efficiency using innovative technologies and data science for informed decision-making.

Originality/value

This paper advises researchers and practitioners involved in freight transport and innovation about main directions and gaps in the field through an integrated approach for evaluating research undertaken in the area. This paper also highlights the role of crisis, e.g. COVID-19, and its impacts on freight transport. Major contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) a qualitative and quantitative, systematic and effective assessment of the literature on freight transport through a network analysis of keywords supplemented by a review of the text of 148 papers; (2) unravelling major research areas; (3) identifying innovations in freight transport and their classification as technological and non-technological and (4) investigating the impact of crises and disruptions in freight transport.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the past few decades, the environment for organisations has been frequently described using the acronym VUCA: a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environment. In spite of the popularity of this acronym, it is not unusual to find some overlap concerning the meaning of those terms, as well as poor definitions of each in the literature. Consequently, the main purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic literature review to obtain a conceptual map of the components of VUCA and their relationships and to highlight some avenues for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a systematic review of various databases between 1999 and 2021. A total of 833 papers were identified and 26 of them met the inclusion criteria for the current study.

Findings

The subsequent analysis revealed several overlaps and relationships between the four terms. Based on this analysis, the authors propose a conceptual map that could serve as a basis for future research and practice.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the exploratory nature of the study and the scarce number of empirical studies, the impact that the use of the VUCA framework has had on businesses could not be addressed.

Originality/value

By clarifying the different components of VUCA and specifying the relationships between them with a comprehensive conceptual map, this paper may contribute to more rigorous empirical research, as well as help managers and executives more effectively deal with turbulent environments.

Abstract

Purpose

Understanding policy consequences for cities is very important in an urban setting, especially in this era of developing solutions for grand challenges. Climate change adaptation and smart cities are emerging topics in the climate change and sustainability domain. Therefore, this paper aims to achieve a better understanding of policy consequences and exploring synergies of climate change adaptation and smart cities are valuable for both research and practice.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper systematically reviews synergies of smart city applications in urban climate change adaptation literature. A systematic literature review and content analysis are carried out to answer the research questions and a theoretically based smart cities concept matrix with synergetic coproduction theory is used to assess the empirical studies.

Findings

Key findings are that the model of synergetic coproduction could identify the benefits co-existing in smart city and climate change adaptation. While smart people and smart government play the fundamental roles, synergies could co-occur in other smart city dimensions. Smart city applications in climate change adaptation could increase competitiveness in cities by exploiting the opportunities as well as reducing the harmful risks.

Research limitations/implications

The outcomes of the smart city applications in climate change adaptation aim to contribute to the exploration of developing indicators for smart city studies in climate change.

Practical implications

The findings provide successful examples for city governments and stakeholders to identify the low-hanging fruits as well as win-win adaptations. The results could also serve as the exploration of indicators in the field of smart city in climate change. The smart cities concept with the synergetic coproduction theoretical model could be further developed into a sustainability accounting and reporting methodology for cities to improve their sustainability information management.

Social implications

The successful cases showing benefits could serve as examples for public-private partnerships to develop strategies to exploit opportunities in smart city applications and climate change adaptation. The review results also show that the integrated approach of smart city and climate change adaptation is possible and beneficial – hopefully the city managers and policymakers will continue to apply the integrated approach with smart city and further climate action agenda.

Originality/value

This study combines two emerging topics in the assessment, climate change adaptation and smart cities, and represents a new way of assessing literature and possibly policy outcomes for the cities. By using the theoretical framework from smart cities and theory of coproduction, a theory-based framework is developed for assessing the empirical studies of climate adaptation in cities. The findings from the systematic literature review indicate relations among smart city dimensions in a clear manner and also identify the synergies of smart cities and climate adaptation.

Abstract

Purpose

Information technology infrastructure library (ITIL) is a commonly utilized IT service management execution technique that helps IT services to be planned, designed, selected, operated and continuously improved. ITIL procedures are utilized to measure the efficiency of IT service management procedures and their association with the accelerated system development of cloud systems. The challenges faced in IT deployment and maintenance management significantly restrict cloud computing services' reliability. Therefore, this article aims to review a comprehensive study of the role of cloud computing on the ITIL processes.

Design/methodology/approach

Each enterprise strives to stay competitive in the market and offers the services its consumers are looking for, all in line with cost-effectiveness and client needs. The ITIL framework provides best practice guidance for IT service management that includes a collection of ample publications supplying detailed guidelines on the management of IT functions, processes, responsibilities and roles associated with IT service management. On the other hand, the way companies employ IT services with an effect on the role of enterprise infrastructure is altered by cloud computing. Hence, the investigation makes utilization of a systematic literature review (SLR) detailing crucial success factors of cloud computing execution in ITIL. The authors have recognized 35 valuable contributions, providing a comprehensive view of study in this field, of which 22 papers were found according to some filters that have been analyzed in this article. Selected articles are presented in two groups, including cloud service and cloud service providers.

Findings

Owing to the overall expense of execution and problems with combining the ITIL approach with the existing organizational IT strategic strategy, ITIL adoption has begun to wane over the last few years. An established methodology for ITIL deployment that will assure long-term success for those wanting to use private cloud procurement will be the most important inference that can be taken from this article. ITIL offers a perfect platform to execute and support cloud applications effectively. IT will prevent cloud sprawl and instability, reduce the likelihood of service interruption and optimize customer loyalty by merging humans, procedures and technologies into hybrid environments.

Research limitations/implications

This survey is more aimed at specialists such as IT experts; so, further evaluations must also be carried out in order to understand the company's views on the risks and advantages of adopting ITIL. In addition, non-English articles are not discussed in this article.

Practical implications

The study outcomes would help suppliers of cloud computing services assess their service quality and ensure customer satisfaction with the quality of cloud computing services. The outcomes will also supply a reference for cloud infrastructure customers to assess and choose various kinds of cloud computing services.

Originality/value

An SLR with perspectives from ITIL professionals and business studies is the benefit of this report. By offering a more thorough framework that helps companies achieve efficiency, effectiveness and creativity in ITIL execution, this article would be useful for ITIL clients, decision-makers and developers.
