Abstract

The phenomenon of superconductivity has been studied for 90 years, with the latest surge in popularity occurring in the late 1980s, when high‐temperature superconductors were first created. In this time much progress has been made to create commercially viable applications of the technology and understand the theory behind the phenomenon. Furthermore, at a time when national science policy was undergoing close scrutiny, the high‐temperature superconductor boom served as a high‐profile case study of the role of government in spurring the acceptance of new technologies. This bibliography provides resources that chronicle the technological and scientific developments in the field since its discovery and the policy decisions and issues that governments and society made when faced with a possible scientific revolution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the development of Chinese research in superconductivity since the advent of high‐temperature superconductivity (HTS) in the mid‐1980s, and to compare Chinese research with that of its international competitors.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used publications, citations, journals, subject categories and institutional data from the Web of Science database.

Findings

Chinese HTS research has grown steadily in importance over the period, with a significant increase in peer‐recognition, as measured by citations from non‐Chinese researchers. A comparison with superconductivity research in England, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and the USA shows that the impact of the Chinese work is growing relative to the other countries, with a cluster analysis showing that the current bibliometric status of Chinese research is most similar to that of England, France and Russia.

Originality/value

This is both the first bibliometric study of Chinese research in superconductivity and the first bibliometric comparison of different countries' research in superconductivity since the advent of HTS. Cluster analysis provides an interesting way of identifying analogous international bibliometric profiles.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to suggest a new revolutionary method and installation for flight on Earth and into outer space.

Design/methodology/approach

Methods of electromagnetic physics are used for research and the theory of levitation vehicles is developed and its possibilities researched.

Findings

It was found that levitation devices and electricity storage make a jump in aviation, space, storage and transfer energy and many branches of industry.

Practical implications

Many projects were calculated using different versions of the offered AB engine: a small device for levitation‐flight of a human (including flight from Earth to outer space), fly VTOL car (track), big VTOL aircraft, suspended low‐altitude stationary satellite, powerful Space Shuttle‐like booster for travel to the Moon and Mars without spending energy (spent energy is replenished in braking when the ship returns from another planet to its point of origin), using AB‐devices in military, in sea‐going ships (submarines), in energy industry (for example, as small storage of electric energy) and so on. The vehicles equipped with AB propulsion can take flight for days and cover distances of 10,000s of kilometers at hypersonic or extra‐atmosphere space speeds.

Originality/value

The paper promises a new revolutionary method of flight on Earth and into outer space.

A stochastic process with repulsive correlation is proposed to simulate the nonequilibrium electronic transport through microstructures under finite bias voltage. Since an electron needs to stay a finite time τ0 on a channel state while traversing the constriction structure, within τ0 other electrons can not follow up through the same channel state because of the Pauli exclusion. This quantum effect induces a time correlation and suppresses the shot noise. The Monte Carlo results fairly compare with experimental measurements.

Abstract

A method is presented for calculating the critical state profiles in bulk superconductors. It can be used for asymmetric samples in non‐uniform fields and for transport currents as well as magnetisation. In this technique the sample starts with no current flowing. Elements carrying Jc are then inserted at the point of maximum vector potential and the field recalculated. The process is continued until the external field is screened from the interior. As an example the force on a magnet above a cylindrical puck is calculated.

In 1911 Kamerlingh Onnes, a Dutch physicist, discovered that the resistance of mercury to electric current dropped effectively to zero at 4° Kelvin. Abstract

To describe the wide range of possible applications of high temperature superconductors (HTSCs) (e.g. magnetic bearings, levitation systems or electrical machines) several appropriate calculation algorithms have been developed. They determine the force interaction between a superconductor and any even multidimensional magnetic field excitation system. Especially good agreements between experiments and computed results have been obtained for the Vector‐Controlled Model, which seems to be the best approximation of the macroscopic superconductivity behaviour. The validation of this model by means of measurements makes it a powerful tool for the design and optimisation of any HTSC application in the field of force generation. It can be used not only for the designing of levitation applications, but also to help the understanding of the flux penetration, flux trapping and magnetisation of bulk superconductors in non‐uniform magnetic fields. By means of this model, the force interaction between superconductors and external magnetic fields for practical multi‐polar configurations, e.g. superconducting levitation systems or inherently stable superconducting bearings has been determined. Furthermore, the time dependency of the forces taking flux flow and flux creep into account, can be considered.

Abstract

Purpose

With the predicted rise in air traffic, a growing need exists to make the aviation industry more environmentally sustainable in the long-term future. Research has shown that the turbo-electric distributed propulsion system (TeDP) could be the next disruptive technology that has the potential to meet the ambitious environmental goals set for the N + 3 time frame. This however will require the use of superconductivity, application of high-temperature superconducting materials and cryogenic liquids. This paper provides a brief overview of the technology and further discusses the benefits, advantages and new opportunities that may arise from the application of the technology.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a brief overview of the technology and further discusses the benefits, advantages and new opportunities that may arise from the application of the technology.

Findings

Implementation of superconducting technology is currently one of the greater challenges faced and hence this article also reviews some of the key considerations to enable utilisation of cryogenic fuels in the future.

Originality/value

This paper provides a viewpoint and reviews some of the work undertaken in the field. It also provides a perspective on some new possibilities and advantages from using TeDP with cryogenic fuels.
