Empirical studies show that years of schooling are positively correlated with good health. The implication may go from education to health, from health to education, or from factors that influence both variables. We formalize a model that determines an individual’s demand for knowledge and health based on the causal effects, and study the impacts on the individual’s decisions of policy instruments such as subsidies on medical care, subsidizing schooling, income tax reduction, lump-sum transfers, and improving health at young age. Our results indicate that income redistribution policies may be the best instrument to improve welfare, while a medical care subsidy is the best instrument for longevity. Subsidies to medical care or education would require large imperfections in these markets to be more welfare improving than distributional policies.

Global imbalances and financial crisis discussed in the preceding chapters were not the only contemporary issues that shaped the current and future landscape of the world economy. Since 2004, many countries also felt a significant shock prompted by a surge in the oil price, forcing them to look for the appropriate policy response that would produce least pain and minimum impact on welfare. The fact that oil remains an important source of energy for many countries, developed and developing alike, a price surge can trigger a new round of global conflicts. Indeed, from the hording of grain in Neolithic times to rivalry over resources in the interimperial wars of the 16th–19th centuries that laid the groundwork for World War I, and to modern nations warring over oil, competition and the desire to have a control over the possession of critical sources of vital materials had always been at the center of conflicts from the very beginning of human story. To prop up their industrialization, for a long period of time developed countries had relied on a stable supply of oil, making their political and strategic relations with oil-producing countries so critical, yet fragile and crisis prone. Conflicts and wars over oil were fought among the oil-producing countries as well.¹ Although it was not admitted by the U.S. administration, at least not publicly, the desire to have greater control over oil was also the primary reason for the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

We aim to comb the current policies that have been developed to promote the environmental industries in China and analyze them in a comparative manner.

We mainly use the method of text study to study the existing policies that Chinese central government published to promote the development of environmental industry. We built a database of policies and regulations from 1979 to 2015 by searching the official website of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China.

We find that the existing policies focus on command and control approaches. Policies are more oriented to the stage of production instead of stages of investment and consumption. They rely more on negative incentive when stimulating supply and positive incentive when encouraging demand. Based on existing academic wisdom, we suggest that Chinese government should pay more attention to environmental economic policy and to stimulating demand for environmental products.

Few studies provide a systematic overview of the policy systems that have been developed to promote environmental industry in China in a systematic manner.

Concerning migration on a national level, two phenomena emerge: people migrating from one region to another and people moving from the countryside to the cities. The geographical shift of the population between regions in a country is a slow process. In Sweden, only a few percent of the population migrate yearly. Nevertheless, migration has caused and still causes considerable redistribution of the population toward the metropolitan regions in Sweden. This section will emphasize general trends in population concentration through urbanization and migration in Sweden and compare these trends with changes in other countries.
