Abstract

This article discusses issues related to the use of new technologies in local communication on the example of selected Polish cities. It will discuss the tools used by local authorities in the process of local communication with residents and entrepreneurs, aimed at increasing their participation in the local decision-making process. The study will focus on tools for empowering residents and increasing civic participation in cities. Based on an analysis of documents, interviews with representatives of city authorities (officials, councilors) and residents, using the IDI method, an attempt will be made to analyze the effectiveness of particular tools used by officials. On this basis, the authors formulate conclusions and recommendations for the future on the selection of the most effective tools used in local communication with residents. The aim of this paper is not only to diagnose the current use of the smart city concept in Poland, but also to create a forecast of its use in the coming years.

Abstract

Team teaching in higher education requires a great deal of coordination and commitment from both the professors teaching together, as well as administrators coordinating courses. Given the difficulties in logistics, it is not surprising that many teams give up on team teaching after only one or two semesters. The literature and lived experience by the authors verify the benefits that come from team teaching: multiple perspectives on the course material, more than one-course delivery method, greater attention from students used to just one instructor, and a greater level of energy in the room and on-line when more than one presenter shares the lecture time. Team teaching (or co-teaching as it is also referred to), in the Service Management Specialization at the Gustavson School of Business in Victoria, Canada, is sharing a cohort of students across three classes, and while each professor is responsible for separate course topics, each makes the time to integrate topics and share time in the classroom together multiple times during the semester.

The authors have been part of a team delivering curriculum this way for over 20 years, and this chapter examines how the material is organized and delivered to team teaching success. Critical elements include funding to support team teaching, commitment from professors to coordinate together, willingness to share materials, and building bridges from class to class to enable students to follow and integrate learnings. Team teaching has resulted in greater cohesiveness among faculty teaching in the program, higher teaching evaluations than professors experienced in solo teaching, and students who feel better prepared to tackle complex business problems that cross the interdisciplinary boundaries of marketing, operations, and talent management.

Abstract

L. Dee Fink proposes that different and more significant kinds of learning should be created in higher education to transition student outcomes from simply “learning” to “significant learning,” and these new types of learning should be situated within significant learning experiences (Fink, 2003). Fink also identified a taxonomy of significant learning that included six components: integration, foundational knowledge, application, human dimension, caring, and learning how to learn. Using Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning as a framework, the authors will share the development of a course on navigating the US Healthcare System that resulted in significant learning outcomes for students completing the first semester of a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. Each learning experience will link to a component of the taxonomy and will serve as the mechanism for the authors to share the development and implementation associated with each aspect of the semester-long course. The assessment structure of the course is described in detail. The authors present one or more learning experiences to illustrate each component of Fink’s Taxonomy. Finally, lessons learned from the development and implementation of the course are presented to guide programs considering implementation of a similar significant learning experience.

Educators strive to develop and implement high impact educational experiences, which are critical to ensuring university courses and curricula serve as memorable and transferable learning experiences for students. It is not clear, however, which experiences are exceptional from a student perspective, or what kinds of illustrative examples exist in applied disciplines. In this chapter, we ground our discussion of high impact educational experiences in the field of program evaluation, contextualize it as organized at the University of Minnesota, describe three experiences that have been repeatedly described as impactful by students, and engage in a collective dialogue as teachers and learners.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze how companies in the industry act as orchestrators and manage participants in their networks. The service industry has received little attention from scholars in this field, and this research gap was investigated in this study. Qualitative case study research with an exploratory approach is applied in this research so that in-depth insights can be obtained. Mamikos.com, a platform for room rent in Indonesia, was used as the research subject. Mamikos does not only facilitate tenants to find rooms to live in but also manages how landlords can serve tenants better and help tenants understand what the landlords want. In other words, Mamikos seeks to smoothen the value stream from landlords to tenants and vice versa. This research has implications that the value orchestrator must be able to facilitate the parties in the ecosystem to obtain the fundamental values needed and other side values so that they are loyal to the ecosystem managed by the orchestrator.

In recent years, scholarly focus has shifted towards exploring the applications of disruptive technologies in professional services. These studies emphasise the need for further research in this domain. This research aims to comprehensively review the existing literature on the uses of blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms in professional services such as higher education, healthcare, financial securities firms and smart energy consulting. The rapid innovation and advancement in technology have led to substantial improvements in work efficiency and productivity. As industries transition towards sustainability and digitalisation, the role of energy-efficient systems becomes important in shaping smart factory designs and in further implementations. The uses of AI and other disruptive technologies for business operations not only boost production efficiency but also enhance customer satisfaction. Central to this transformation are strategies like deep learning and data/text mining, which facilitate the shift from conventional manufacturing practices to smart manufacturing. Apart from smart energy systems, the fields of higher education, healthcare and financial securities are witnessing a surge in the applications of AI, ML algorithms and blockchain technology and their contributions in emerging service economy. This study undertakes a comprehensive investigation into various factors associated with the application of disruptive technologies, evaluating their impact on the operational efficiency of professional service firms (PSFs). Introduction: Lending is an age-old concept, and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending is not new. The reduction in the issuing of loans by banks has made people switch from traditional to online mode. The introduction of the online P2P lending industry is in its nascent stage of growth. As this industry is relatively new, understanding user experience, sentiments, and emotions would be helpful for the industry to innovate as per customer requirements.

Purpose: To explore the patterns in the sentiments expressed by users of ‘Cashkumar’ based on Google reviews.

Methodology: Sentiments have been analysed using user experience in risk, cost, ease of use, and loan processing time. Python application was used for sentiment analysis of Google reviews.

Findings: The sentiment analysis results showed that the average sentiment score was 0.7144, which indicates that the user sentiment towards ‘Cashkumar’ is positive. The reviews reflect that the users, especially borrowers were satisfied with the platform’s services and happy with loan processing time. The other factors – ease of use, cost, and risk – were not given much importance by users. Both lenders and borrowers faced a few issues, but the results of the lender’s sentiment analysis could not be generalised due to a smaller number of posted reviews.
