Abstract

A systematic, disciplinary approach to setting preservation priorities developed at Mann Library is described. The Core Agricultural Literature project, under the direction of Wallace C. Olsen, has identified the core historical literature in seven disciplines comprising the agricultural sciences. Specific applications and adaptations of the core literature methodology in three other biology and agriculture preservation projects are discussed. Two of the four preservation projects briefly described here have been undertaken as part of a national preservation plan for agricultural sciences literature. The application of digital technology in a national cooperative effort to preserve core historical literature of agriculture represents the culmination of Mann Library's work in developing a disciplinary approach to national preservation planning.

Abstract

The elements of a conceptual and organizational model for conducting systematic selection of electronic publications are presented. Refined at Mann Library over the past decade, the model is designed to develop staff expertise in selection of information resources across formats, and to ensure that the full impact of selections on every part of the library organization is anticipated at the time of selection. Described are the concept of information genres, the role of genre specialists, and a selection review board, the Electronic Resources Council, which is made up of representatives from throughout the library organization. The model is presented as a method of mainstreaming, or operationally and conceptually integrating, electronic publications into the library's resources and services.

Abstract

During the last several years the staff of Mann Library has struggled with big questions and decisions. We have been obliged to recognize that the decisions we make today provide the foundation for the research library of tomorrow. We may not be able to grasp the precise details of the research library of 2020, but we are committed to the responsibility of ensuring that its great ideal will be upheld. As we have made decisions for today, we have been conscious of posterity and of assuring that the ideal of the research library survives.

Abstract

The selection and evaluation of CD‐ROM disks are important steps in the planning of a CD‐ROM facility. The choice of databases depends upon, among other factors, the objectives of the library, the projected use of each disk, and financial considerations. In this article we review the literature that deals with these matters. We begin with what is available on disk selection, via both printed directories and in the journals. We next discuss reported methods of disk evaluation. Finally, we cover existing reviews of various CD‐ROM products.

Abstract

Concentrates on the organisational and indexing aspects of software collections. Unique problems are posed by: 1. the complexities of the nature of software; 2. rapid changes taking place in the software industry. One needs to decide if the collection is to be current or historical. The organisation of the material and level of indexing should be matched to the use being made of the system. Evaluates different levels of indexing. Discusses the indexing decisions that are unique to the software/information technology field. References are given to more detailed information.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide theoretical and practical perspectives on the “library as space” debate as well as an update of an earlier (2002) New Library World article on one university library's attempt to re‐position itself through physical change.

Design/methodology/approach

The first part examines the need to fashion academic libraries as desirable destinations for students in the face of the 24/7 availability of both library and non‐library electronic sources of information. The second part provides an account of some of the latest initiatives undertaken by the library at Saint Mary's University, an urban, primarily undergraduate university of 8,000 students on Canada's east coast.

Findings

The critical importance of providing a comfortable and stimulating environment for students and the rewards for doing so are confirmed, with reference to various Canadian and US schools. Some of the almost‐universal characteristics of today's students are identified within the context of the changing nature of academic research and communication.

Practical implications

It offers advice and insights to libraries striving to strengthen their place within the academic life and social environment of the university. It also provides arguments for and encouragement to those attempting to implement innovative changes to either library space or library policies.

Originality/value

Brings together many of the ideas and experiences of disparate academic libraries facing similar challenges.

In this study the microstructure and wear characteristics of Multilayer AlCrN coated AISI 410 stainless steel with the physical vapor deposition technique.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study the microstructure and wear characteristics of Multilayer AlCrN coated AISI 410 stainless steel with the physical vapor deposition technique.

Design/methodology/approach

The friction and wear performance of the ML-AlCrN-coated AISI410 steel and uncoated AISI410 steel sliding against with high carbon steel were investigated by the ball cratering test at room temperature. The tribological characteristic of coated AISI410 steel was determined by applying constant sliding velocity of 0.3927 ms−1 and total sliding distance of 353.43 m over various normal loads of 2, 3 and 4 N.

Findings

The AlCrN-coated AISI410 steel showed excellent wear performance up to 4 N load. The uncoated AISI410 steel showed good to acceptable wear resistance up to 2 N load. The wear tracks and worn surface were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) attachment for explaining the differences in wear mechanism.

Originality/value

The ability of coating to delay substrate oxidation, with an excellent wear resistance, was identified under different parameters on worn areas.
