Abstract

To provide a framework for corporate and divisional planning and operation decisions, SPX Corporation, a Fortune 500 manufacturing company, has developed an elegantly simple paradigm: Correct strategy, linked to and implemented through dedication to total quality, will create value for all stakeholders.

Abstract

Perhaps the best place to start is to tell you something about our business. Smith & Nephew is a British firm, founded in 1856 by a pharmacist named T.J. Smith. Mr. Smith was an entrepreneur with one significant product—cod liver oil, which he imported from Norway.

Abstract

Considers some of the major spheres of influence which can affect the design of the passive fire protection of a building and outlines passive fire protection materials and applications, fire tests, Building Regulations and the possible influence of European legislation. Discusses the five major requirements relating to fire which must be met when designing a building. Details the use of sprays, boards, intumescents, performed sections, fire barrier ′quilts′ or ′blankets′ and penetration seals and firestops. Explains the British Standard fire tests and provides reactions to them. Summarizes building control regulations, with reference to The Building Regulations 1991, recent developments and European aspects.

Abstract

Purpose

This study intends to decompose the tourist choice process into two stages (decision to take a holiday and tourist expenditure), and to propose and test various expectations on the dimensions which explain the above decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to simultaneously model the two decisions, we use a system of equations based on the Heckit model.

Findings

The dimensions affecting the decision to go on holiday are income, household size, education, size of the city of origin and opinion of going on holiday. The determinant factors influencing the level of expenditure are distance between origin and destination, type of accommodation, income, household size, age, marital status and length of stay. An important finding of this analysis is the differentiated effect of a given dimension on each decision.

Research limitations/implications

The lack of information on some explanatory dimensions. Joint modelling. The spending decision should be modelled jointly with the decision to go on holiday due to the dependency between them.

Practical implications

The promotion of destinations should be developed with special attention paid to some faraway markets of origin, due to the expected propensity for these tourists to spend longer periods at the destination. The specialisation of destinations in terms of accommodation type and length of stay. The design of holiday packages should be adapted to the needs of the tourists identified, as they represent the most profitable tourist profiles.

Originality/value

The particular findings, and the research and practical implications proposed show the relevance of the topic analysed. Also, these aspects are backed by a sample of 3,781 individuals, which assures the robustness of the results.

Abstract

Examines the issue of whether créches should be supported in the working place. Assesses the decision with the use of ′critical success factors′ (CSFs), that are critical to the successful achievement of the objective. Concludes that créches are not a factor critical to an organisation′s success, and thus the créche plea must be met with refusal.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this paper is to contribute to improved practice and impact of foresight through the development and testing of a Foresight Impact Evaluation Schema. The schema is designed to guide foresight practitioners in the more effective design and conduct of foresight exercises to optimise impact.

Design/methodology/approach

The development of the schema is based on the significant previous work in this field, and the author's experience of designing and managing more than 100 foresight projects. It also takes into account accumulated experience with heuristics developed to guide foresight design and management, and with various approaches to evaluating the impact of social science knowledge on policy‐ and decision‐making.

Findings

A range of impacts identified from major foresight projects have been characterised according to four categories of impact ‐ awareness raising, informing policy, enabling greater capacity to address uncertainty, and influencing policy, strategy, investment, program delivery and public attitudes.

Research limitations/implications

The schema needs to be tested against a variety of foresight projects to further refine its usefulness.

Practical implications

With the rapid growth of the application of foresight, it has become essential to guide practitioners in the appropriate design and management of all the processes associated with foresight to achieve maximum impact, and to demonstrate the value of the investment in foresight to consequent policy and planning.

Originality/value

This paper builds on earlier and contemporary work to develop a more refined and applicable schema to guide foresight impact evaluation.

Abstract

Purpose

There is a growing consensus that monetary policy occupies a primary position in macroeconomic management. This study aims to analyse how monetary policy performed in a sample of Caribbean countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a univariate analysis on the price variables to conduct a comparative analysis on inflation and to examine the background to the relationship between mean inflation and inflation persistence.

Findings

In a descriptive statistics analysis, framed within the discretion versus rules debate, the paper argues that there is not only an association between monetary policy, inflation and economic performance but also that the institutional contexts provided varying degrees of constraints on policy.

Originality/value

The paper provides further confirmation that monetary policy occupies a primary position in macroeconomic management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review, from a sustainable management perspective, a range of conceptual frameworks; determine the efficacy and utility of three different data sources in generating indicators collectively; and consider the utility of a single index of total ecosystem services (TESI). The ecosystem service (ES) concept has been discussed as an important model to aid sustainable land-use management.

Design/methodology/approach

The historical development and the relative merits of sustainable management frameworks which can be implemented in a decision-making context were examined. The efficacy of a single index TESI was examined considering three data sources for 11 contrasting sites within the UK.

Findings

The choice of conceptual framework and data source depends on the specific question and scale being addressed. Publicly available data through the Eurostat route is primarily limited to the assessment of the provisioning services.

Research limitations/implications

Limitation of the study is that both bottom-up and top-down sourcing of data to conduct an ES assessment were considered.

Practical implications

The scale of enquiry when conducting ES assessment to aid sustainable management dictate the most useful data source. If conducting local assessments that give local data is more appropriate while conducting European Union (EU)-wide assessment gives less local precision, it does provide some insight when conducting larger-scale regional assessment which cannot otherwise be achieved.

Originality/value

The various data set analysed in this study all provided insight for sustainable management.
