Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to survey retail investors to study the determinants of their investment behaviour and show that individual heterogeneity and financial factors such as gender, age, educational status, income, and investment levels determine their trading behaviour across three domains; however, features such as marital status and occupation do not play any significant role in shaping their trading behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

Structured surveys are conducted on retail and small investors using the brokerage services of a firm. Data collected from primary methods are used for statistical analysis in ANOVA and multiple regression frameworks.

Findings

The authors also report that retail investors’ self-perceived confidence as a function of both expected and unexpected changes in the market and personal factors largely determines trading behaviour of retail investors and that self-perceived confidence level and self-reported portfolio size are positively associated implying that (over-)confident retail investors tend to believe that their investment skills being superior are bound to perform better and thus they typically hold larger than average investment portfolios.

Practical implications

These findings are significant because research on cross-sectional variance of individual investment behaviour explains how investor heterogeneity plays a critical role in investment and asset allocation decisions. Investors, researchers, and practitioners would use the results for financial decision making specifically related to personal finance, behavioural portfolio management, and investment advisory.

Originality/value

This paper is an empirical approach to explore the retail investor behaviour using psychometric approach with respect to self-perceived confidence and other perceived measures of investor behaviour. The authors contribute to the emerging set of literature on investor behaviour and behavioural finance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of mobile applications on investment decisions by retail investors in stocks and mutual funds. This study focuses on how mobile technologies are applied on mobile apps by retail investors for e-trading in emerging financial markets.

Design/methodology/approach

The study explored predictive relevance for the adoption behavior of retail investors under the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework. Further, goal contagion theory was applied to investigate the adoption behavior of investors towards e-trading. An adapted questionnaire was used to collect the date from April to June 2021 and data analysis was performed on 507 usable responses. The methodology adopted in this study is variance based partial least square structural equational modelling (PLS-SEM). Additionally, the study explains important and performing constructs based on the response of retail investors towards mobile app usage for investment decisions.

Findings

The study shows that effort expectancy, performance expectancy followed by perceived return were the primary determinants of behavioral intentions to use mobile applications by retail investors for e-trading. Further, habit of investors determined the adoption behavior of investors towards mobile apps. Additionally, the study revealed that perceived risk is not an important aspect for retail investors in comparison to perceived return.

Research limitations/implications

The study in future can address to the aspect of personality traits of retail investors for technology adoption for investment decisions. Further investigation is required on addressing unobserved heterogeneity of retail investors towards technology adoption process in emerging financial markets.

Practical implications

The study provides theoretical and practical implications for retail investors, financial advisors and technology companies to understand the behavioral pattern and mobile apps adoption behavior of retail investors in emerging financial market. The findings in the study will help broking firms to sensitize their clients for effective use of their respective mobile apps for e-trading purposes. The study will strengthen the knowledge of financial advisors to understand investment behavior of retail investors in emerging financial markets.

Originality/value

This study unfolds a novel framework of research to understand the technology adoption pattern of retail investors for e-trading by mobile applications in emerging financial markets. The present study provides significant understanding in the domain of technology adoption by retail investors under behavioral finance environment.

Purpose

Evidence suggests that retail investors who invest in individual stocks are, in the long run, largely outperformed by market indexes such as the MSCI World. While some turn to exchange traded funds (ETFs) to invest in such market indexes, few migrate completely to ETFs. This study aims to shed light on the rationale behind retail investors' partial and complete migration from stocks to ETFs.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing from the pull-push-mooring framework, a qualitative study (N = 21) informs a quantitative study (N = 282) by following established mixed methods guidelines. This study develops propositions for partial and complete migration intention to ETFs.

Findings

Results reveal that perceived investment possibilities, perceived risk reduction, perceived administrative effort, perceived expensiveness and monetary loss costs influence the migration from stocks to ETFs. This study shows that three configurations of perceptions result in partial migration intention and one configuration results in complete migration intention.

Originality/value

This study explains why some migrate partially from stocks to ETFs and others migrate completely. Findings show that both migration behaviors are subject to the same perceptions, but the configurations that form the behaviors are different. While only some identified perceptions must be present for a partial migration, all of them must be present for a complete migration, as it requires retail investors to sell their stocks and accept the costs incurred to invest in ETFs instead.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to understand the impact of loss aversion and herding on investment decision of retail investors. The study further evaluates the mediating role of fear of missing out (FOMO) in retail investors on these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed questionnaire survey to collect data from retail investors of Indian stock market. Total 323 data were collected. The collected data were examined using SmartPLS. Factor analysis and partial least square structural equation modeling were employed for fulfilling the objectives of the study.

Findings

The results of the study revealed that investment decisions of retail investors are significantly influenced by loss aversion, herd behavior as well as FOMO. Assessing the impact of herd behavior and loss aversion on investment decision in presence and absence of FOMO exposed that FOMO partially mediates these relations. The mediation was complementary in nature as the presence of FOMO increased the influence of loss aversion and herd behavior on retail investor's investment decisions.

Practical implications

Behavioral predispositions are accountable for numerous irregularities in stock markets. Thus, it is quite substantial to realize the stimulus of these partialities on investment decisions. The outcomes of this study would help financial planners and investors to keep in mind the different ways their decision outcomes could be biased and try to ignore them.

Originality/value

Though there have been many studies conducted on behavioral biases and their impact on investment decisions, there are very few studies that have taken into account the FOMO factor in investment, in context of the behavioral biases. Theoretically, FOMO has been linked with herd behavior and greed of earning more, but there are very few empirical supports to this fact. Thus, this study is an attempt to fill this gap by examining the role of FOMO on investment decisions and the different biases associated with it.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting behaviour intention (BI) to use and actual usages of investment-related FinTech services among the zoomers (Gen Z) and millennials (Gen M) retail investors of India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study explores the predictive relevance of actual adoption behaviour among the two different age categories of Indian retail investors. It uses the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology-2 and the prospect theory framework as guiding frameworks. Data has been collected from 294 retail investors, actively engaged in the investment-related FinTech services. The multi-group analysis using variance-based partial least square structured equation modelling has been used to compare the two groups. The invariance between the two groups was achieved through measurement invariance assessment.

Findings

The study reveals distinct factors significantly affecting BI to use investment-related FinTech services among Gen Z and Gen M retail investors are performance expectancy (PE) to BI, perceived risk (PR) to BI, price value (PV) to BI and PR to service trust (ST).

Research limitations/implications

This study provides insights for financial providers and policymakers, emphasizing different factors influencing BI to use investment-related FinTech services in both age groups. Notably, habit emerges as a common factor influencing the actual usage of investment-related FinTech services across Gen M and Gen Z retail investors in India.

Originality/value

This study explores the heterogeneous behaviour of the heterogenous population in the domain of technological adoption of investment-related FinTech services in India.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the trading behaviors of retail investors and investigate their impacts on stock returns.

Design/methodology/approach

As retail investors are considered as the main noise traders in the capital market, using the trading records of Chinese retail investors from 2005 to 2009, the authors study their trading preferences and the correlation of their trades. Then, they use a multifactor model to test whether the co‐movement of stock returns could be explained by individual sentiment.

Findings

The authors' results show that the small‐cap stocks are obviously preferred by retail investors. Meanwhile, the net stock demands of retail investors are systematically correlated, even when the effect of market risk is excluded. In the perspective of the net stock demands, the authors use BSI to measure the individual sentiment, finding that individual sentiment plays an important role in the formation of the cross‐section of stock returns. However, the authors' results imply that BSI is a reverse indicator to predict the future returns, which implies that the trading behaviors of retail investors are irrational.

Originality/value

Consistent with behavioral theory, the authors' findings support the viewpoint that stock returns could be affected by the systematic correlated trading of retail investors. To some extent, their findings highlight the need to know more details of individual investors' trading behaviors through which the fluctuations of asset prices can be better understood.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the Malaysian retail investors and fund managers’ investment decision behaviours. The study offers an important opportunity for understanding the investors’ experiences, how they understand the Malaysian economy and their priorities for company selection. Other main aspects of this study are how investors mitigate the influence of emotions and psychological biases and challenges faced during investment decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers have mainly adopted an interpretivist approach for the present study. Qualitative data elicited through semi-structured interviews conducted with four retail investors and four fund managers were subjected to qualitative thematic analysis.

Findings

The results reveal that the investment decision processes of fund managers are more comprehensive than those of retail investors. Although both fund managers and retail investors acknowledge the influence of psychological biases on their investment decisions, the former use different and comprehensive approaches to mitigate such influences during investment decisions compared with the latter. Other important findings are how investors understand the Malaysian economy, their priorities for company selection and challenges faced during investment decisions.

Research limitations/implications

The researchers have interviewed eight carefully selected interviewees across retail investors and fund managers divide. Adopting other grouping criteria, focus group discussion with more respondents or adopting a mixed-methods approach may increase our understanding of the investment decision behaviours of Malaysian retail investors and fund managers.

Practical implications

This study could be used as a guide by both retail investors and fund managers when making investment decisions.

Originality/value

This research has included both retail investors and fund managers; it has also increased literature on investment decision and behavioural finance, particularly in the context of Malaysian investors and managers.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study was to examine the investment decision behaviour of retail investors in Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted semi-structured interviews to solicit an understanding of six retail investors on investment decision behaviour in Malaysia. Content analysis technique was used to analyse the data and verbatim texts were applied in discussing the emergent themes.

Findings

The findings indicate that retail investors in Malaysia are patriotic in nature, and their investment decisions are based on feeling of comfort or convention rather than quantitative analysis. They rely so much on their findings rather than third party’s views for making investment decisions. They were influenced by the psychological biases because they herd on the information. Challenges are solved through experience, and they believe that proper understanding of the financial and economic settings of the country can enhance better investment decision-making.

Research limitations/implications

A more detailed investigation on the investorsbehaviour with more samples may expand our understanding of this issue. Future studies need to examine the investment decision behaviour with more samples.

Practical implications

First, it will prepare hit and run investors to be more ready to remain in the market and improve their skills on how to make sound investment decisions. Second, it helps the investors to know that knowledge of traditional finance theory is not sufficient to excel in stock market, and, hence, they need to know more about behavioural finance. Third, investors are exposed to various reasons as to why investment decisions deviate from expected and different means of solving the challenges faced in making investment decision within the Malaysian context. Fourth, investors are reminded that understanding the financial settings before investing is essential. Finally, policy makers in stock market are able to understand the retail investorsbehaviour.

Originality/value

This study examines the experience and prospect to remain as stock market investors, their priorities in selecting the right company for investment purposes, the kind of information seeking from third parties, the challenges faced by them and other important considerations in investment decisions. These have never been examined together in this way in investigation of retail investors’ investment behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to show the changing behavior of investors in the post-pandemic period, the continued development of “emotional communities” in the financial market, as well as the factors contributing to their formation and the role of such communities in the elaboration of investors' decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

The research includes an analysis of the popularity of various terms searched in the US segment of Google in the financial category from 2004 to 2022, their correlation with financial market indicators and theoretical observations around these data.

Findings

The results obtained by the author allow him to draw the following conclusions: (1) the change in investors' behavior indicates the formation of the new distributed community-centric model of the financial market; (2) the main distinguishing feature of the behavior of many retail investors is gamification; (3) the networking of investors contributes to a significant change in their priorities in the elaboration of investment decisions; (4) the fundamental indicators of the financial market play an ever decreasing role in the decision-making of individual investors.

Originality/value

To the best of the author's knowledge, the formation of emotional communities of investors and their role in the elaboration of mass investor decisions is not widely covered in the literature. The paper develops a framework for further studies on the role of emotional communities in the financial market and in changing behavior of retail investors.

Abstract

Purpose

Guided by several pioneered studies, the purpose of this paper is to comprehensively investigate the investment behaviours of Malaysian retail and institutional investors in an attempt to identify whether the influence of psychological biases is equally applicable to investor divides.

Design/methodology/approach

The researchers have adopted a quantitative research design by way of survey methodology to obtain data from institutional and retail investors in Malaysia. In addition, the authors have mainly employed second-order measurement invariance analysis to uncover the difference across investor divides.

Findings

The tests of measurement invariance at the model level indicate an insignificant difference between institutional investors and retail investors. The post hoc test (at the path level) reveals that institutional and retail investors are similar with respect to representative heuristic, overconfidence bias and anchoring bias; though the results also show that they are different with respect to religious bias and herding bias.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the findings of this study, it is generally not logical to assume that institutional investors completely behave rational during investment decisions. Besides, future researchers are called upon to directly compare the investment decisions of institutional and retail investors with respect to whether the influence of psychological biases is equally applicable to them, particularly on the investigated psychological biases and other psychological biases that are not covered in this study.

Originality/value

This study has offered insight into whether the influence of psychological biases is equally applicable to institutional and retail investors in Malaysia using second-order measurement invariance analysis. This study is unique in context and the approach it has adopted.
