Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to extend the cubic B-spline quasi-interpolation (CBSQI) method via Kronecker product for solving 2D unsteady advection-diffusion equation. The CBSQI method has been used for solving 1D problems in literature so far. This study seeks to use the idea of a Kronecker product to extend the method for 2D problems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, a CBSQI is used to approximate the spatial partial derivatives of the dependent variable. The idea of the Kronecker product is used to extend the method for 2D problems. This produces the system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) with initial conditions. The obtained system of ODE is solved by strong stability preserving the Runge–Kutta method (SSP-RK-43).

Findings

It is found that solutions obtained by the proposed method are in good agreement with the analytical solution. Further, the results are also compared with available numerical results in the literature, and a reasonable degree of compliance is observed.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the CBSQI method is used for the first time for solving 2D problems and can be extended for higher-dimensional problems.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, a second-order standard wave equation extended to a two-dimensional viscous wave equation with timely differentiated advection-diffusion terms has been solved by differential quadrature methods (DQM) using a modification of cubic B-spline functions. Two numerical schemes are proposed and compared to achieve numerical approximations for the solutions of nonlinear viscous wave equations.

Design/methodology/approach

Two schemes are adopted to reduce the given system into two systems of nonlinear first-order partial differential equations (PDE). For each scheme, modified cubic B-spline (MCB)-DQM is used for calculating the spatial variables and their derivatives that reduces the system of PDEs into a system of nonlinear ODEs. The solutions of these systems of ODEs are determined by SSP-RK43 scheme. The CPU time is also calculated and compared. Matrix stability analysis has been performed for each scheme and both are found to be unconditionally stable. The results of both schemes have been extensively discussed and compared. The accuracy and reliability of the methods have been successfully tested on several examples.

Findings

A comparative study has been carried out for two different schemes. Results from both schemes are also compared with analytical solutions and the results available in literature. Experiments show that MCB-DQM with Scheme II yield more accurate and reliable results in solving viscous wave equations. But Scheme I is comparatively less expensive in terms of CPU time. For MCB-DQM, less depository requirements lead to less aggregation of approximation errors which in turn enhances the correctness and readiness of the numerical techniques. Approximate solutions to the two-dimensional nonlinear viscous wave equation have been found without linearizing the equation. Ease of implementation and low computation cost are the strengths of the method.

Originality/value

For the first time, a comparative study has been carried out for the solution of nonlinear viscous wave equation. Comparisons are done in terms of accuracy and CPU time. It is concluded that Scheme II is more suitable.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to measure the global research landscape of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) of India on a set of quantitative and qualitative metrics in terms of research output toward exploring research trends and give an overview of collaborative practices by researchers of NIPERs.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study has selected the Scopus database as a tool to retrieve potential publications of studied NIPERs during the last 12 years (2010–2021). NIPER-Mohali, NIPER-Hyderabad, NIPER-Ahmedabad, NIPER-Guwahati and NIPER-Kolkata have been selected for the study. The study has adopted a comprehensive search strategy to extract 3,926 publications data. VOS viewer 1.6.17, BibExcel and Microsoft Excel were used for data analysis and visualization.

Findings

The global scientific research output of NIPERs accrued 3,926 publications with an average of 327 publications per year. The retrieved publications fetched a total of 67,772 citations with an average citation impact of 17.26. There observed a steady growth of publications from 168 to 509 registered with an average growth rate of 18.44%. The mean relative growth rate and doubling time of research output are 0.26 and 2.94. The authorship patterns explore collaborative trends as most of the publications were published by multiple authors (99.39%). NIPERs have expanded their outreach to collaborate with the USA, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Australia and the UK to collaborate on research and regulatory reforms exhibits in the USA as a major contributor.

Originality/value

The present study is the first effort to evaluate the global research productivity of NIPERs and assess the current research trends on a set of quantitative and qualitative metrics to provide some insights into the complex dynamics of research productivity. The study’s outcome may help to identify the current research progress of NIPERs at the global level.

Abstract

Purpose

Several empirical studies have shown that the “servicization” of India ' s economy has taken place in terms of structural changes in GDP. But the structural changes in terms of employment have been slow, as agriculture is still the mainstay of more than 50 per cent of the total workforce. Though agriculture is still the predominant sector of the economy in terms of employment and livelihood, it is losing its dynamism. The country has been striving to achieve target of 4 per cent growth in agriculture since the 8th Five Year Plan so essential for achieving the objective of “inclusive growth”. However, the country is nowhere near the goal even in the penultimate year of 11th Five year Plan. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the need for application of science and technology in India ' s agriculture to ensure sustainable development of agriculture with food security and also for tapping the “demographic dividend”. The agricultural crisis in India motivated the author to take up this study.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study mainly used secondary sources of data. The analysis of secondary data available in various documents, reports etc. revealed that agriculture in India is indeed passing through crisis. The review of literature revealed that science and technology can play a crucial role in rejuvenation of India ' s agriculture.

Findings

The paper shows that an integrated application of science and technology with social wisdom can help in checking the most serious form of brain-drain (i.e. migration of youth from rural to urban areas), mitigate the adverse impact of climate change and rejuvenate/revive India ' s agriculture so very essential for sustainability of India ' s growth, as has been stressed by Swaminathan.

Originality/value

The paper emphasizes the need for application of science and technology in India ' s agriculture to ensure sustainable development of agriculture with food security.

Abstract

Purpose

Growing emphasis on long-term viability prompts researchers and industry professionals to collaborate on innovative approaches for sustainability and survival. Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technology's importance drives active adoption by firms amidst evolving business dynamics. This research examines the influence of I4.0 technologies on lean, agile resilient and green practices and their impact on supply chain performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data from Pakistani manufacturing enterprises were analyzed using SMART PLS to explore the relationship between I4.0 technology, supply chain practices and supply chain performance.

Findings

I4.0 technologies significantly impact all practices, while agile and resilient supply chain approaches partially mediate the relationship with supply chain performance.

Practical implications

Insights from this research guide policymakers and business experts in implementing and managing lean, agile, resilient and green practices. Integrating these principles with digital technology solutions enhances supply chain performance.

Originality/value

This study advances understanding of the interplay between I4.0 technologies, practices and supply chain performance, providing a basis for further research and practical implications.

Abstract

Purpose

Innovation and entrepreneurship are regarded as the key drivers to steer the engine of economic development in any nation. As a result, to understand the context and process of innovation and entrepreneurship there has been a steady rise in scientific literature and empirical studies. The purpose of this paper is to study the trends and progress of academic research on innovation and entrepreneurship in India by identifying the key articles, journals, authors and institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

Scientometric methods especially bibliometrics is used, for measuring the maturity of this research field in the country. The paper studies the research landscape in innovation and entrepreneurship in India by doing a bibliometric analysis using data from publications indexed in the Scopus database from the year 2000 to 2018. The study takes a multidisciplinary review of the literature in innovation and entrepreneurship research in India and could be used as a reference for future studies in this theme.

Findings

The study finds an increase in the scholarly studies in innovation and entrepreneurship in India in the last decade. It was also found that a large number of publications were joint-authored and collaborations between Indian and foreign universities is happening. The paper also highlights the authorship patterns, top journals and the most cited papers.

Research limitations/implications

A major limitation of this study is that it has considered publications which are indexed in Scopus. This paper has contributed by highlighting the growth of studies in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship in the Indian context. The results can be used by future studies in this area as a starting point to highlight the nature of this research area.

Originality/value

The study attempts to present a trend analysis of published literature on innovation and entrepreneurship in India.

Abstract

Purpose

In part-I of this review series, research from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka was reviewed. The purpose of this paper which is part-II of the series, is to review management research from India and Pakistan over a 25-year period from 1990 to 2014.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review approach was adopted for this research. As a quality standard for inclusion, articles were restricted to journals rated A*, A, or B by the Australian Business Deans Council in 2013 and either Q1 or Q2 in the Scopus/Imago classification system. The divisions and interest groups of the Academy of Management were used as framework to organize the search results.

Findings

A total of 1,039 articles related to India (n = 930) and Pakistan (n = 112) emerged from the search process, with three articles being related to both countries. The research was published in 163 different journals that met the quality criteria. The period under review coincides with the advent of economic liberalization in India and this emerged as a major theme in the India-related research. Other context-specific insights for these two countries are also derived from an ecological and institutional theory perspective.

Originality/value

This research represents the first comprehensive and systematic review of management research in India and Pakistan. As in part-I, the unique review approach allows for strict adherence to a predetermined quality standard while including a wide variety of journals and research traditions.
