Abstract

Purpose

Multiple input multiple-output (MIMO) has emerged as one among the many noteworthy technologies in recent wireless applications because of its powerful ability to improve bandwidth efficiency and performance, i.e. through developing its unique spatial multiplexing capability and spatial diversity gain. For carrying out an enhanced communication in next-generation networks, the MIMO and orthogonal frequency division multiple systems were combined that facilitate the spatial multiplexing on resource blocks (RBs) based on time-frequency. This paper aims to propose a novel approach for maximizing the throughput of cell-edge users and cell-center users.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the specified multi-objective function is defined as the single objective function, which is solved by the introduction of a new improved algorithm as well. This optimization problem can be resolved by the fine-tuning of certain parameters such as assigned power for RB, cell-center user, cell-edge user and RB allocation. The fine-tuning of parameters is attained by a new improved Lion algorithm (LA), termed as Lion with new cub generation (LA-NCG) model. Finally, the betterment of the presented approach is validated over the existing models in terms of signal to interference plus noise ratio, throughput and so on.

Findings

On examining the outputs, the adopted LA-NCG model for 4BS was 66.67%, 66.67% and 20% superior to existing joint processing coordinated multiple point-based dual decomposition method (JC-DDM), fractional programming (FP) and LA models. In addition, the throughput of conventional JC-DDM, FP and LA models lie at a range of 10, 45 and 35, respectively, at the 100th iteration. However, the presented LA-NCG scheme accomplishes a higher throughput of 58. Similarly, the throughput of the adopted scheme observed for 8BS was 59.68%, 44.19% and 9.68% superior to existing JC-DDM, FP and LA models. Thus, the enhancement of the adopted LA-NCG model has been validated effectively from the attained outcomes.

Originality/value

This paper adopts the latest optimization algorithm called LA-NCG to establish a novel approach for maximizing the throughput of cell-edge users and cell-center users. This is the first that work uses LA-NCG-based optimization that assists in fine-tuning certain parameters such as assigned power for RB, cell-center user, cell-edge user and RB allocation.

Abstract

Sensory evaluations to determine the shelf life of food products are routinely conducted in food experimentation as a part of each product development program, whether it includes a new product, product improvement or a change in type or specification of an ingredient. In such experiments, trained panelists are asked to judge food attributes by reference to a scale of numbers. The “failure time” associated with a product unit under test is usually defined as the time required to reach a cut‐off point previously defined by the food company. Important issues associated with the planning and execution of this kind of testing are total sampling size, frequency of sample withdrawals, panel design, and statistical analysis of the panel data, to list a few. Different approaches have been proposed for the analysis of this kind of data. In particular, Freitas et al. proposed an alternative model based on a dichotomization of the score data and a Weibull as the underlying distribution for the time to failure. Also, through a simulation study, the bias and mean square error of the estimates obtained for percentiles and fraction defectives were evaluated. These quantities were used to estimate the shelf life. The simulation study used only the same sample plan implemented in the real situation. This paper focuses on the planning issues associated with these experiments. Sample plans are contrasted and compared in a simulation study, through the use of the approach proposed by Freitas et al.. The simulation results showed that, in general, one can get results much more precise and with smaller bias with a shorter follow‐up time, allocating more panelists to each evaluation time.

Abstract

Purpose

In capital markets, research risk factor loadings and characteristics are considered as opposing explanations for the cross-sectional dispersion in average stock returns. However, there is little known about the performance an investor would obtain who believes either in the characteristics explanation (CB-investor) or in the risk factor loadings explanation (RB-investor). The purpose of this paper is to compare the performance of CB- and RB-investors.

Design/methodology/approach

To compare the competing strategies, the authors propose a simple new approach to equity portfolio optimization in the style of Brandt et al. (2009) by modeling the portfolio weight in each asset as a function of the asset's risk factor loadings or characteristics. The authors perform an empirical analysis on the German stock market, exploiting the risk factor loadings from the Carhart (1997) four-factor model and the respective characteristics size, book-to-market equity ratio and momentum.

Findings

The results show that investment strategies relying on characteristics (particularly on momentum) outperform risk-based investment strategies in horse races. These findings hold in- and out-of-sample. Furthermore, the characteristics-based investment strategies outperform a value-weighted market portfolio strategy in- and out-of-sample.

Originality/value

The authors introduce a portfolio optimization approach that enables investors to directly link portfolio decisions to the firm’s characteristics or risk factor loadings.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a resource allocation mechanism for Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) in a wireless cellular system and to obtain a rapid and efficient transmission scheme over various types' services. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by simulation results.

Design/methodology/approach

A big problem for wireless communication is the limited time/frequency resources. Therefore, the most important issue is how to utilize these limited resources to transmit various services over a wireless broadband network, especially for MBMS services. In this paper, resource allocation mechanism in a full unicast system is first analyzed with three classical methods, then improved modulation and coding schemes (MCS) methods are proposed in a full multicast system to improve system throughput and spectral efficiency. Based on the foregoing discussions, research on resource allocation mechanism for mixed multicast and unicast traffic is developed in single‐cell and multi‐cell system (MBSFN, MBMS over single frequency network), respectively. Different transmission proportions between multicast and unicast are analyzed and a multiplexing scenario is also considered.

Findings

Resource allocation is a hot topic in wireless communication and there are many investigations on it. However, resource allocation for multicast system, especially for mixed multicast and unicast traffic system, is still a problem worthy of further study. Under same transmission condition in a single cell scenario, system throughput in multicast mode is worse than in unicast mode, which is partly because the number of valid date in multicast resource block (RB) is less than the one in unicast in 3GPP LTE/LTE‐A, on the other hand, because that multicast need to select a relative low MCS to satisfy most MBMS users, even the users with a very poor transmission condition. Fortunately, multicast in MBSFN (MBMS over single frequency network) transfer mode can largely improve system performance.

Originality/value

Improved MCS selection schemes are proposed for full multicast transmission and three transmission scenarios for mixed multicast and unicast traffic are presented to discuss resource allocation mechanism over various types' services. Simulation results show that system performance of multicast system can be greatly enhanced in MBSFN transmission mode, especially with MIMO technology.

Cropsharing tenancy is a common form of production organisation in peasant agriculture. The sharing arrangement may assume a number of forms depending on how inputs and outputs are divided between the respective parties to the arrangement. Thus, under one form, the parties (or a decision entity on their behalf) may deliberately seek to optimise the factor inputs and resources available to them, including the tenant's labour, in order to maximise output and pay the contracting parties their respective returns. This form is known as the Joint Account System (JAS).

Abstract

To promote the effective allocation of public sports venues in the county and promote the construction of new urbanization, the allocation of public stadiums in the county was studied under the background of new urbanization. Interviews and literature research methods were adopted. The differences between the new urbanization and the traditional urbanization of the county's public stadiums were discussed. Under the background of new urbanization, the status quo of the allocation of public stadiums in China's counties was studied. Under the background of new urbanization, the problems and influencing factors of the allocation of public stadiums in China's counties were analyzed. The corresponding proposal was put forward. The results showed that the number of county venues in China was greatly improved, but the total amount was still insufficient. The configuration structure was improved, but the structural imbalance was still significant. The way of configuration was innovative, but the government dominated the main position. The configuration policy was constantly improving. The legalization was not perfect. Therefore, the balance between supply and demand, the balance of urban and rural settings, the optimization of public sports venues, and the establishment of public stadiums under new urbanization are important. This will help to promote the study of the allocation of public sports venues in China's counties under the background of new urbanization.

Abstract

With the constant increasing scale of urban buildings, the contradiction between supply and demand of land use problems is more prominent. Therefore, the multi-objective space optimal allocation of urban land use based on spatial genetic algorithm was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the present situation of the urban land use resources was expounded; in view of the urban land use planning, a spatial genetic algorithm was proposed; then, the urban land was divided into different functional areas, and the land planning and design method was put forward; finally, taking a city's land space planning as an example, the optimal planning and design were carried out to the geological disasters, low hilly land and land overall utilization; by comparing the land use before and after the planning optimization, the advantages of land optimization design were confirmed.

Purpose

Since the performance of vehicular users and cellular users (CUE) in Vehicular networks is highly affected by the allocated resources to them. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the resource allocation for vehicular communications when multiple V2V links and a V2I link share spectrum with CUE in uplink communication under different Quality of Service (QoS).

Design/methodology/approach

An optimization model to maximize the V2I capacity is established based on slowly varying large-scale fading channel information. Multiple V2V links are clustered based on sparrow search algorithm (SSA) to reduce interference. Then, a weighted tripartite graph is constructed by jointly optimizing the power of CUE, V2I and V2V clusters. Finally, spectrum resources are allocated based on a weighted 3D matching algorithm.

Findings

The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can maximize the channel capacity of V2I while ensuring the reliability of V2V and the quality of service of CUE.

Originality/value

There is a lack of research on resource allocation algorithms of CUE, V2I and multiple V2V in different QoS. To solve the problem, one new resource allocation algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, multiple V2V links are clustered using SSA to reduce interference. Secondly, the power allocation of CUE, V2I and V2V is jointly optimized. Finally, the weighted 3D matching algorithm is used to allocate spectrum resources.

Abstract

This paper studies the accounting system reform practised in Greek universities since January 2000, and more particularly at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). It specifically examines the allocation of resources to faculties by university management based on certain criteria. The AUTH is the largest public university in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Following a study of financial data on variances in expenditure over the past 12 years, the application of a new method for allocating funds to departments is proposed through use of a certain formula. The results from the application of the formula for resource allocation have shown that the latter needs to be modified in order to be considered fairer and be accepted by the academic community.
