Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to provide a review of the research studies that took place in the previous years regarding Mangiferin and its potential use in the treatment of various disorders such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and human immunodeficiency virus.

Design/methodology/Approach

Mangiferin can be easily extracted from the plant at a very low cost to treat some common as well as deadly diseases, which will be a miracle in herbal treatment. In support of this, the recent related articles were considered to understand the bioactive compound “Mangiferin” to treat lifestyle diseases. Various review articles and research papers were collected from international and national journals, and internet sources were also being used to compile the current manuscript.

Findings

Mangiferin has been shown to have the potential to mitigate many life style diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, fatty liver, atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia and diabetes-related end-organ complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy.

Originality/value

In this comprehensive review, this study evaluates Mangiferin and its lifestyle disease-modifying properties for nutraceuticals purposes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop chicken powder (CP) incorporated fried chicken vermicelli and to evaluate the collective effect of rosemary and betel leaf extracts (RE+BE) in developed products, on the performance of storage study parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

Two different groups were made from developed products: the first control group without RE+BE incorporated and the second group treated with RE+BE (1:1). Various chemical, microbiological and sensory parameters of both groups were evaluated at intervals of 15 days up to 60 days of storage.

Findings

RE+BE incorporation had significantly improved (p < 0.01) the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), free fatty acid (FFA) and tyrosine value as compared to control. TBARs value of RE+BE treated product remained lower (0.23 ± 0.08 to 0.65 ± 0.07) than the control (0.25 ± 0.06 to 0.83 ± 0.05). Similarly, RE+BE treated product had significantly (p < 0.04) lower total plate count (TPC), Staphylococcus count (SC) and significantly (p < 0.01) lower yeast and mold count than control. Likewise RE+BE incorporation significantly (p < 0.01) improves sensory score (texture, flavor and overall acceptability except for appearance) of the product. RE+BE treated sample at the 60th day had a higher overall acceptability score (6.3 ± 0.8) than the score of control at the 45th day (6.1 ± 0.9).

Research limitations/implications

A shelf-stable meat product can be made by chicken powder incorporation in the gram flour and a combination of rosemary and betel leaf extracts may be used to improve the shelf-life of meat products.

Originality/value

RE+BE incorporation into chicken vermicelli improved chemical (TBARs, FFA content and Tyrosine value), microbiological (TPC, Staphylococcus count and yeast and mold count) and sensory (flavor, texture and overall acceptability) parameters of chicken vermicelli during 60-day storage.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to investigate and clarify how the triple helix actors can effectively implement the concepts of Kaizen to navigate and overcome the complex obstacles brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Through broad literature reviews, nine common parameters under triple helix actor have been recognized. A regression analysis has been done to study how the triple helix actors’ common parameters impact Kaizen implementation in business operations.

Findings

The results of this study revealed insightful patterns in the relationships between the common parameters of triple helix actor and the dependent variables. Notably, the results also showed that leadership commitment (LC) emerges as a very significant component, having a big impact on employee engagement as well as organizational performance.

Research limitations/implications

In addition to offering valuable insights, this study has limitations including the potential for response bias in survey data and the focus on a specific set of common parameters, which may not encompass the entirety of factors influencing Kaizen implementation within the triple helix framework during the pandemic.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive exploration of the interplay between triple helix actors and Kaizen principles in addressing COVID-19 challenges. By identifying and analyzing nine specific common parameters, the study provides a novel framework for understanding how triple helix actors collaboratively enhance organizational performance and employee engagement during challenging times.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a conceptual framework for transition of brand trust to brand love in an uncertain market situation, from the perspective of cognitive-emotion theory (CET).

Design/methodology/approach

Since brand anthropomorphism is successfully established in branding research, this study takes cognitive characteristics of brand trust and emotional characteristic of brand love from extant literature to develop a conceptual framework for transformation of brand trust (cognition) into brand love (emotion). This study situates the relationship in the context of market uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses in the development of the conceptual framework by taking cognitive components of brand trust and brand behavioural characteristics as moderator, in uncertain market situation.

Findings

Findings suggest that transition of brand trust (cognition) to brand love (emotion) is possible in uncertain situation, and brand behavioural characteristics moderate this relationship. Brand behavioural characteristics are brand innovativeness, brand ethicality, brand empathy, brand expertise and brand agility, which have the potential to further strengthen the relationship in the given situation.

Research limitations/implications

This research proposes a conceptual model and propositions that add a rich understanding to the relationship of brand trust and brand love, which requires empirical testing in any brand category context. Through a richer understanding of conditions and the underlying psychological mechanism, researchers and marketers, brand managers, policymakers and so forth can gain insights that aid strategic decision-making. Trusted brands can leverage on the situation by highlighting unique behavioural characteristics to establish a strong and sustainable long-term relationship.

Originality/value

The current research is an attempt to provide deeper insights from the perspective of CET, into the relationship of brand trust (cognition) and brand love (emotion) by introducing conditions under which a trusted brand becomes a lovable brand in uncertain market situation, thereby adding new knowledge to branding, customer-brand relationship sustainability, in uncertainty literature. The new perspective, that is CET, puts forward a novice view on the advantage of brand love over brand trust that could help in formulating strategic decisions in managing brands in crisis situation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into international career motives, repatriation and career success of Indian women in Science and Technology.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with (upper) middle-class Indian women in Science and Technology in Bangalore and New Delhi, India.

Findings

Thematic analysis resulted in four themes – International career motives, Theme 1: cross-cultural and scientific exposure; Repatriation reasons and experiences, Theme 2: family reunion, career prospects and readjustment; Career success, Theme 3: international experience; and career growth, Theme 4: social responsibility. Motives for international career mobility of Indian women were: exposure to foreign cultures, international collaboration in science and personal and professional development. Family formation and reunion and career prospects were reasons for repatriation and positively influenced repatriation experiences of Indian women. Readjustment to people and conditions in India impacted their repatriation experiences negatively. The meaning women attribute to career success is grounded in recognition from peers in science, career growth, satisfaction and contribution to science and Indian society.

Research limitations/implications

The sample of Indian female scientists may limit generalization of the findings to global career professionals in other professions from other countries with different socio-cultural and economic contexts.

Practical implications

HR policies that foster international careers of women scientists as well as women's networks in science to share and apply knowledge, and their contribution to the Indian economy and society will enhance global career success of women and strengthen the sustainable competitive position of organizations.

Originality/value

The study provides new insights into motivation for international career mobility and repatriation of women professionals from a developing country and their career success in the home country, and contributes to the development of theoretical frameworks on international career mobility and career success.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the relationship between financial inclusion and economic development in Pakistan based on available sources of detailed data and assess its outcome of financial inclusion on basic standards of life, then accord relevant recommendations to prompt economic growth and development.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design selected for data analysis was meta-analysis, besides, data analysis over the period 2010-2015 was performed by using a descriptive statistical approach, regression and correlation analysis, i.e. the Pearson correlation matrix.

Findings

The authors find a positive relationship between financial inclusion and economic development, resultantly; increase in financial inclusion may lead to an increase in economic development. In detail, the number of the number of bank accounts (per 1,000 adult population) and the number of bank branches (per 100,000 people) have a positive relationship with human development index (HDI). Where else the amount of automated teller machines per 1,000 km2 (per cent) reveals a negative relationship.

Practical implications

The study has shown that expand financial access such as strengthen the establishment of bank accounts and bank branches can increase economic development in Pakistan. That is the government should focus on the financial inclusion policies as a means of ameliorating poverty, through a participation of all economic agents in the financial system. There is an utmost need for the Government of Pakistan to prioritize the importance of financial inclusion.

Originality/value

The novelty of the study is taken HDI and three representative indicators as a measurement of economic growth and financial inclusion, respectively, meanwhile, meta-analysis, multivariate regression model sum up that poverty alleviation is connected with the development of a more inclusive financial services sectors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the challenges facing women in India due to the intersectionality of gender and other forms of identities impacting on their personal and professional lives by exploring the intersection of gender, colour, caste, ethnicity, religion, marital status, and class as sources of discrimination against women in Indian society and workplaces.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is discussing the socio‐cultural traditions leading up to the complexities of multiple intersections of identity for women living and working in India, offering a paradigm shift from Western issues of gender equality towards understanding women's empowerment issues within the Indian context.

Findings

Indian women are marginalized in their access to education and healthcare, and they are also compromised in their personal and professional development by being undervalued, underemployed and under‐rewarded. The social implications are the impact of awareness, changing attitudes and corporate social responsibility interventions towards improving the quality of life of women in India. Multinational corporations as well as Indian organizations may be influenced to implement diversity policies and practices beyond individual identities to incorporate the complex intersectionality that is the reality and dilemma of the challenges faced by Indian women in society, in professional careers and within organizations.

Originality/value

Readers will find originality and value in understanding the complexities of gender equality issues in India as compared to other countries and contexts. It can inform researchers, academics, practitioners and policy makers on how to address the disparities and discrimination against women and guide comparative discourses between India and other countries towards eliminating discrimination against women.

Abstract

Purpose

Privacy and security of personal data is the prime concern in any communication. Security algorithms play a crucial role in privacy preserving and are used extensively. Therefore, these algorithms need to be effective as well as energy-efficient. Advanced Encryption Standards (AES) is one of the efficient security algorithms. The principal purpose of this research is to design Energy efficient implementation of AES, as it is one of the important aspects for a step toward green computing.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents a low voltage complementary metal oxide semiconductor (LVCMOS) based energy efficient architecture for AES encryption algorithm on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. The experiments are performed for five different FPGAs at different input/output standards of LVCMOS. Experiments are performed separately at two frequencies (default and 1.6 GHz).

Findings

The comparative study of total on-chip power consumption for different frequency suggested that LVCMOS12 performed best for all the FPGAs. Also, Kintex-7 Low Voltage was found to be the best performing FPGA. At 1.6 GHz frequency, the authors observed 55% less on-chip power consumption when switched from Artix-7 with LVCMOS33 (maximum power consuming combination) to Kintex-7 Low Voltage with LVCMOS12. Mathematical models are developed for the proposed design.

Originality/value

The green implementation of AES algorithm based on LVCMOS standards has not been explored yet by researchers. The energy efficient implementation of AES will certainly be beneficial for society as it will consume less power and dissipate lesser heat to environment.
