Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming and powder metallurgy are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on the subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for the last five years, and more than 1100 references are listed.

Abstract

The minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) has been described as “the minimum temperature at which a waterborne synthetic latex or emulsion will coalesce when laid on a substrate as a thin film”. If there are no pigments present, such materials will form a smooth, clear, transparent film when dried at temperatures above their MFFT. At temperatures below their MFFT, drying will result in a white, powdery, cracked film. For effective use, it is therefore important that paints and coatings based on emulsions are applied only to surfaces with a temperature above that of their MFFT. This is usually derived by the manufacturer and printed on the side of the tin.

Abstract

A distinction must be drawn between a dismissal on the one hand, and on the other a repudiation of a contract of employment as a result of a breach of a fundamental term of that contract. When such a repudiation has been accepted by the innocent party then a termination of employment takes place. Such termination does not constitute dismissal (see London v. James Laidlaw & Sons Ltd (1974) IRLR 136 and Gannon v. J. C. Firth (1976) IRLR 415 EAT).

Abstract

BEFORE DISCUSSING the treatment of the various subjects in a course, one must look closely at the purposes for which the course was designed, at the course's structure, and at the type of student likely to be taking it. The General Course (Engineering) contains four technical subjects:

Abstract

AS a family company, Astur Chemical claim to be the largest independent wax blending unit in Europe today. For more than half‐a‐century it has developed a wide range of products based on petroleum oils, petroleum waxes, polymers, and resins. Now Astur Chemical produces a range of petroleum jellies from white pharmacopeia to dark green industrial grades, making up a very diverse range. It includes tackiness agents and additives to military specification hydraulic and preserving oils.

Abstract

The special course for technicians needs a more thoughtful approach to the practical work. Ways of furthering an experimental attitude towards materials and simple hand processes are described here. The second half of the article, next month, extends these ideas to lathe‐work, with suggestions for progressive exercises and experimental methods

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize strategizing as a playful design practice; illustrate this view by describing a process for fostering effective strategic play; outline the benefits of the process and discuss how executives can play effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a concept development with a case illustration.

Findings

The paper finds that strategizing through playful design offers both an alternative conceptual lens as well as a novel practice of strategizing.

Originality/value

Strategizing through playful design is a useful complement to dry, conventional strategic planning processes and helps to open up and orient fruitful debate about an organization ' s particular strategic challenges.

Abstract

The first article in this series stressed that from the point of view of teachers of Engineering Drawing, drawing comprehension was the primary requirement of all students engaged in engineering. The further point was made that the approach usually made to this vital requirement is usually too indirect. Important though design and draughting are in themselves, it must be clearly understood that they are only a means to an end. The end product that earns the money is not a beautifully executed set of engineering drawings of a faultless piece of design, but the actual hardware the drawings depict.
