Abstract

Outlines previous research on stock market efficiency and technical trading rules in both developed and emerging markets. Uses variable moving average (VMA) models to develop five technical trading rules and applies them to markets in Taiwan, Thailand and The Phillippines 1994‐1999. Compares results with the US and Japan indices and a simple buy and hold strategy. Finds the VMA rules gave higher returns in Taiwan and very much higher returns in Thailand and The Phillippines, even after transaction costs, but not in Japan and the USA. Considers the reasons why and calls for further research.

Abstract

The following report on political risk in the Phillippines is an abbreviated version of a detailed study. The full report presents the theoretical underpinnings for the model, as well as a detailed rationale for all measurement decisions. The model's estimate of regime stability prior to and following the Aquino assassination has been borne out by subsequent events. While increasing his vulnerability somewhat, the assassination has not reduced Marcos' effective power to a level where regime stability is threatened. The report is distributed by Booz Allen & Hamilton, Bethesda, Maryland, to its political risk group clients.

Abstract

Traces China’s foreign debt policy from 1978 to the present and compares its short and long term debt structure with Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Phillippines and Thailand (i.e. five countries suffering from the Asian economic crisis). Points out that in the 1980s, when all six had high growth rates, China had a severe financial crisis while the others did not: a situation reversed in the 1990s. Compares four debt service capacity indicators for the six, using data from 1983‐1990 and 1991‐1997 to explore the factors causing financial crisis and shows that the ratio of short‐term to total debt is the most important indicator. Discusses the implications for the policies of developing countries and warns that “the hot‐bed for...financial crises still exists”.

Abstract

Purpose

To offer a conference report on the Enriching Indigenous Southeast Asian Collections in Libraries Conference held in Makati City, Manila, Philippines, 20‐21 April 2005.

Design/methodology/approach

introduction and description of conference overview and specific paper presentations.

Findings

Southeast Asian librarianship and information retrieval both within the region and abroad is expanding to include the widespread collection of ephemeral, local indigenous materials, which presents certain challenges that are the focus of the conference.

Practical implications

Increasing the reach of a network of highly trained Southeast Asian librarians and information professionals.

Originality/value

Librarians, scholars, and students of Southeast Asian studies, equipped with increasingly peripheral materials, will possess the tools necessary for continued research beyond the confines of the traditional center and majority populations. Local librarians are becoming empowered with the knowledge and technical skills to better preserve and supply access to indigenous materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The financial sector's resilience is associated with greater prosperity and a better average income. Banks have evolved their business model and diversified their sources of income, and bank digitalization has become one of the prominent strategies. The purpose of this study is to examine how bank service expansion represented by revenue diversification activities and digital strategy will enhance bank stability in ASEAN countries from 2010 to 2021.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses information from the Datastream database and banks’ annual reports to measure bank stability, diversification and market power, which also provide information for bank digital strategy. This study uses the two-step system generalized method of moments to investigate the effect of diversification and digitalization on bank stability in ASEAN.

Findings

The results of this study show that bank revenue diversification has no effect on bank stability, and the presence of the chief digital officer and digital disclosure improves banks’ stability. However, alliance strategy with financial technology companies does not significantly impact bank stability and might increase bank risk.

Practical implications

The findings of this study provide relevant policy implications: the regulation should support bank business to diversify the source of income; regulators and policymakers should regulate and enhance the Information and Communication Technology infrastructure; and banks should design their strategy comprehensively.

Originality/value

This study provides new evidence of the essential role of digital strategy in enhancing bank stability in ASEAN. In addition, this study also shows how banks diversify their business in a competitive environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the associations between customers’ awareness of money laundering and terrorism financing, trust in banking secrecy measures and discomforts in fulfilling the bank’s anti-money laundering (AML) procedure and their acceptance of existing practices of banks regarding AML and counter-terrorism financing.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adapts a set of survey instruments developed and validated by prior studies to collect the required data. A convenient sample of 160 Malaysian bank customers aged 18 and above were surveyed to collect the data.

Findings

This study finds a significant relationship between the respondents’ awareness of money laundering and terrorism financing, trust in banking secrecy measures and their acceptance of the bank’s AML and counter-terrorism financing practices. However, no significant relationship is documented between the level of discomforts experienced by customers in satisfying the banks’ AML requirements and their acceptance of the banks’ AML practices. These results hold even after controlling for alternative explanations of the customers’ acceptance of banking practices examined in the extant literature: age, gender, location, literacy level and occupation.

Research limitations/implications

This study extends the literature on customers’ acceptance of banking practices more broadly by providing empirical evidence on the role of customers’ awareness on issues underlying the banking practices and their trust in the bank’s secrecy measures.

Practical implications

This study also provides some practical contributions by shedding some light on the factors that could help banks increase the acceptance of AML practices among their customers. Thus, the findings of this paper help banks focus their effort on these factors and hence increase acceptance rate more effectively.

Originality/value

Drawing on the elements of the theory of reasoned actions and technology acceptance model and the extant research on trust-privacy and comfortability in a banking setting, this study proposes an integrated approach that is theoretically and empirically grounded.
