Abstract

Purpose

Environmental assessment (EA) is a proactive planning tool designed to consider the ecological, cultural, socio‐political and economic impacts of potential projects, making it a major tool for achieving sustainable development. Meaningful EA requires a bridging of the natural sciences with the social sciences to broaden understanding of the overall environmental impacts of development projects on humans, the natural environment and other organisms. As a result of this complexity, education and training needs are great. The purpose of this paper was to consider EA educational opportunities at Canadian universities and to test a model for the analysis of the state of such education.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design used a qualitative interactive approach, including a survey of 2001 university course calendars, participant observation and semi‐structured interviews.

Findings

Results indicate that the number of universities offering EA courses has tripled to 40 since the mid‐1980 s. While this is a positive finding, data illustrate that the bulk of the courses offered are survey‐oriented and introductory in nature, with little opportunity to specialize. This cursory approach is exacerbated by a lack of teaching resources and instructor development. Despite the nature of the courses offered, many professors encourage critical thinking and use innovative teaching techniques, including role‐playing, to promote self‐reflection. In fact, the interdisciplinary approach to the curricula and the promotion of critical thinking outside disciplinary boundaries are two strengths of current EA programming.

Originality/value

In light of this state of formal EA education in Canada, more research and international level dialogue are warranted.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the pertinent issues, barriers and pitfalls of intergenerational communication in business families during their leadership succession period.

Design/methodology/approach

Building on relational leadership theory, the paper makes use of an action research approach using a qualitative single case study to investigate communication barriers and pitfalls in business transition.

Findings

Through action research, interventions were taken in the underlying case, which increased the consciousness, as well as the personal and social competencies of the business family. Thus, business families stuck in ambivalent entanglement understand their underlying motives and needs within the change process, get into closer contact with their emotional barriers and communication hindrances, which is a prerequisite for any change, and break the succession iceberg phenomenon.

Research limitations/implications

Future research should undertake multiple case studies to validate and/or modify the qualitative methods used in this action research to increase the validity and generalizability of the findings.

Practical implications

Given the large number of business families in transition, our study shows the beneficial effects action research might have on business families’ communication behavior along a change process. The findings might help other business families to understand the value of action research for such underlying challenges and decrease communication barriers.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies to have addressed intergenerational communication of business families using an action research approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report the experiences of redress seeking and organisational responses for targets of bullying.

Design/methodology/approach

A phenomenological research design was adopted. In total, 22 primary teachers (seven males, 15 females) in Ireland were self-selected for interview, following an advertisement detailing the study in a national teacher union magazine. Data were analysed utilising an interpretative phenomenological analysis framework.

Findings

All those interviewed had made official complaints as per available procedures for addressing workplace bullying in their schools. All participants had engaged in Stages 1 and 2 of the official complaints procedures including uptake of recommended counselling. Three participants ceased engagement at Stage 2. In total, 18 participants had engaged in Stage 3 with 12 ceasing engagement at this stage. Seven participants had proceeded to Stage 4. It is noteworthy that no participant articulated satisfaction with the outcome, but conversely all had articulated further upset and acceptance of the reality that redress would not be forthcoming. These participants who had exercised agency in attempting to seek redress were met with power abuses and cultures of collusion.

Research limitations/implications

This is a small-scale study with self-selecting teachers. The data point to some problematic assumptions underpinning anti-bullying policies in small organisations.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to discourses of power/agency in workplace bullying. It challenges researchers and policy makers to elucidate more carefully the issues surrounding seeking redress for bullying.

Abstract

Latin American countries have encountered multiple challenges to implement meaningful transformations to their national educational systems (Baten, 2016). Through a mixed-methods approach (Maxwell, 1992), this chapter aims to present the significance of professional development for teachers and principals in public schools in Latin America. Specifically, the authors explore the significance of professional development that allows these educators to develop a student-centered approach (Gibbs, 1981) in their daily work.

By presenting qualitative and quantitative data from three programs implemented by the non-profit organization Educando by Worldfund, this chapter seeks to showcase how the challenges that Latin America currently faces can be improved through a methodology that focuses on building capacity and that helps educators with concrete practices to foster a student-centered approach in their practice.

The findings in this study showcase the significance of educational interventions that are grounded and tailored to the sociopolitical context in which they will be implemented and it will also posit that, according to the authors’ findings, the students in public schools feel empowered and motivated after their teachers and principals participate in one of these three programs. The larger impact from the cases explored in this chapter will hopefully contribute to a larger conversation regarding how to implement public policies that can empower principals and teachers across Latin America.

Abstract

Purpose

Team-based assignments must be constructed to contribute to the effective development of teamwork skills, an important learning objective for most schools of business. The purpose of this paper is to understand how students view the usefulness of team assignments in order to inform more effective pedagogical techniques related to team-based assignments and the development of student teamwork competencies.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from Likert-scale online surveys administered to students upon completion of the first-year team-based introductory business course. Survey items were developed to assess the team-related activities and components in the course and students’ perceived usefulness of team-based assignments. Results from exploratory factor analyses are presented.

Findings

Data analyses indicated that survey items contributed to students’ perceived usefulness of team-based assignments. Across three studies, the authors developed a new measure to evaluate effectiveness of team-based assignments.

Practical implications

For those educators who utilize team-based assignments in their courses, this study provides a much needed measure to assess the effectiveness of assignments intended to develop students’ teamwork competencies. The findings also serve to provide evidence of assurance of learning, and evidence of how students are developing in the area of interpersonal skills and abilities to manage interactions that most schools of business and universities deem as essential learning outcomes as a result of Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business requirements.

Originality/value

Evidence from online surveys of 755 students in a pilot study and two additional studies conducted longitudinally over a two-year period support a new measure to assess the usefulness of specific team assignments.

Abstract

Purpose

One of the key elements in the banking industry relies on the appropriate selection of customers. To manage credit risk, banks dedicate special efforts to classify customers according to their risk. The usual decision-making process consists of gathering personal and financial information about the borrower. Processing this information can be time-consuming, and presents some difficulties because of the heterogeneous structure of data.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents an alternative method that is able to generate rules that work not only on numerical attributes but also on nominal ones. The key feature of this method, called learning vector quantization and particle swarm optimization (LVQ + PSO), is the finding of a reduced set of classifying rules. This is possible because of the combination of a competitive neural network with an optimization technique.

Findings

These rules constitute a predictive model for credit risk approval. The reduced quantity of rules makes this method useful for credit officers aiming to make decisions about granting a credit. It also could act as an orientation for borrower’s self evaluation about her/his creditworthiness.

Research limitations/implications

In spite of the fact that conducted tests showed no evidence of dependence between results and the initial size of the LVQ network, it is considered desirable to repeat the measurements using an LVQ network of minimum size and a version of variable population PSO to adequately explore the solution space in the future.

Practical implications

In the past decades, there has been an increase in consumer credit. Retail banking is a growing industry. Not only has there been a boom in credit card memberships, specially in emerging economies, but also an increase in small consumption credits. For example, it is very common in emerging economies that families buy home appliances on installments. In those countries, the association of a home appliance shop with a financial institution is usual, to provide customers with quick-decision credit line facilities. The existence of such a financial instrument aids to boost sales. This association generates conflict of interests. On one hand, the home appliance shop wants to sell products to all customers. Therefore, it is in its best interest to promote a generous credit policy. On the other hand, the financial institution wants to maximize the revenue from credits, leading to a strict surveillance of loan losses. Having a fair and transparent credit-granting policy favors a good business relationship between home appliances shops and financial institutions. One way of developing such a policy is to construct objective rules to decide to grant or deny a credit application.

Social implications

Better credit decision rules generate enhanced risk sharing. In addition, it improves transparency in credit acceptance decisions, giving less room to arbitrary decisions.

Originality/value

This study develops a new method that combines a competitive neural network and an optimization technique. It was applied to a real database of a financial institution in a developing country.
