Abstract

This paper discusses the practicalities and limitations of establishing a service user consultation group to guide service developments, based on the evaluation of a podiatry patient panel in South Yorkshire. It describes the specific difficulties in recruiting a representative panel of service users, and the gradual acculturation of the panel from a group of challenging activists to unpaid members of the podiatry department.

Abstract

Flexible automation robotic systems and off‐line programming methods have recently received much attention. Studies the problem of robot auto‐marking and auto‐cutting of shipbuilding panels, using an integrated computer aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system based on computer technology and off‐line programming of the robot. The following three points are focused on in this paper: marking and cutting information of the panel’s CAD model; measurement of the panel’s deformation and its compensation algorithm; robot auto‐making and auto‐cutting of the panel using the CAM system. Robot auto‐marking and auto‐cutting of shipbuilding panels solves the difficulty associated with panel marking and cutting by hand. Furthermore this system possesses high processing precision and automatically compensates for the deformation of the panel. Our experiments prove the feasibility and efficiency of this system at the end of this paper.

Abstract

Claims that many supposed disadvantages regarding the inadequacies of consumer panels as research tools may not exist and, in some circumstances, may prove to be superior to the normal interview. Posits further research may aid in supporting panel techniques. Puts forward a framework for classifying panels and explains this in depth. Concludes that the subject requires further research on it, as it is not unlikely that even the present disadvantages of panel operations will greatly diminish in importance.

Abstract

Purpose

The sheathing panels of traditional light wood frame shear walls mainly use oriented strand board (OSB) panels, and the damage of the traditional walls is mainly caused by the tear failure at the bottom corner of the OSB panel. In order to improve the lateral performance of the traditional light wood frame shear wall, a new type of end narrow panels reinforced light wood frame shear wall is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

The monotonic loading tests and finite element analysis of nine groups of walls, with different types of end narrow panel, types of fasteners used on the end narrow panels and the end narrow panels edge fastener spacing, are carried out. The effects of different characters on lateral performance of light wood frame shear walls are reported and discussed.

Findings

The failure modes of the wall reinforced by parallel strand bamboo narrow panels with 150 mm edge nails spacing are similar to the traditional wall. Conversely, the failure modes of other groups of walls reinforced by end narrow panels are the tears of the bottom narrow panel or the bottom beam. The end narrow panel reinforced light wood frame shear wall can make full use of the material property of sheathing panels. Compared with the lateral performance of traditional walls, the new-type end narrow panels reinforced walls have better lateral performance.

Originality/value

A new type of end narrow panels reinforced light wood frame shear wall is proposed, which can enhance the lateral performance of the traditional light wood frame shear wall. The new-type walls have advantages of convenient operation, manufacture cost saving and important value of engineering application.

Abstract

Rodney Cooper, Furniture Partner of London's Building Design Partnership, carried out for the Designers' Journal a survey of partitioning suppliers and manufacturers. The results — and the attitudes of those people approached for information — tended to confirm the view that many users must have formed: that the industry has still not come to terms with the demands of a more sophisticated market. Often the product exists that will do the Job, but the detailed information is hard to find.

Abstract

In a national quality assessment of business administration in Norway, the work of eight simultaneously working external assessment panels was studied. The article examines how the panels considered different kinds of information sources and processes during the assessment, and in writing their reports. The study shows that information from self‐evaluation reports and instructional checklists, from an arranged conference and a training seminar, was ranked low by the panels, while information from the interaction between the panels and the assessed department and/or institution was highly valued together with internal discussions inside the panels and the assessors’ own knowledge and experience. In writing their external reports, the information highly valued was used most by the assessors. Possible implications of the study, especially in relation to the organisation and set‐up of external assessments, are presented in the conclusion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish the dynamics model of spacecraft during deployment of oblique solar panel using Auto Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical System (ADAMS) and to study the attitude motion of the spacecraft system during the oblique solar panel deployment.

Design/methodology/approach

For the case of an oblique solar panel on spacecraft, the dynamics virtual prototype model of deployment of oblique solar panels on spacecraft is established and the dynamics simulation is carried out using ADAMS. The effects of solar panel deployment on the attitude motion of spacecraft with different oblique angles are studied and the attitude motion regularities of spacecraft system are discussed. First, the effects on attitude motion of spacecraft are compared between the normal solar panel deployment and oblique solar panel deployment on a spacecraft. Then the attitude motion of spacecraft during the deployment of solar panel with different oblique angles on spacecraft is studied.

Findings

The effects of oblique angle of solar panel deployment on the attitude motion of spacecraft are significant in yaw axis. The bigger the oblique angle, the bigger the changes of yaw angle of spacecraft. However, the bigger the oblique angle, the smaller the changes of roll angle of spacecraft. The effects of oblique angle on pitch angle of spacecraft are slight.

Practical implications

Providing a practical method to study the attitude motion of spacecraft system during deployment of solar panel and improving the engineering application of spacecraft system, which put forward up spacecraft system to the practical engineering.

Originality/value

The paper is a useful reference for engineering design of a spacecraft attitude control system and ground text.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse some mechanical properties and parameters of drapability using different methods from two different points of research area: knowledge bases and numerical modelling using the finite element method.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach consists of analysing some mechanical properties and parameters of drapability using different methods from two different points of research area: knowledge bases and numerical modelling using the finite element method. The knowledge bases, named FP_B‐1 and FPO_B‐2, were used to analyse the bending rigidity of fused panels. The numerical model of fused panel NMFP is used to analyse parameters of drapability.

Findings

Based on the analyses of bending rigidity and draping of fused panels the conclusions indicate the significance of interaction between mechanical properties and parameters of drapability of the fused panel to garment appearance. Furthermore, the methods used present a computer approach to the study of the fused panel properties important for the computer‐based engineering and the presentation of real behaviour of all aspects of clothes.

Practical implications

This numerical model of a fused panel enables a 3D observation of this aspect of clothes' which is a behaviour, very important contribution to the computer planning of the behaviour of produced clothes.

Originality/value

A better understanding of how to construct fused panels in clothing.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper's aim is to focus on the design, manufacture and test of a stiffened panel in composite material with integrated longitudinal foam‐filled stiffeners, spar and rib caps, using one‐shot liquid infusion (LI) process, reducing weight and number of subparts respect to metallic reference baseline P180 Avanti vertical fin.

Design/methodology/approach

Extensive activities in computational applications in order to improve the efficiency of the design process finite element analysis/structural sizing codes have led to an optimised engineering design process that resulted in a successful stiffened carbon fibre reinforced polymer panel design in terms of weight and number of parts with respect to the metallic baseline.

Findings

The composite panel has fulfilled all the design requirements (reduction of mass and number of parts with respect to the metallic reference baseline) overcoming the certification static test, and confirming the reliability of the theoretical analyses.

Research limitations/implications

The composite aircraft components, conceived as unitized structure by one‐shot process, guarantee not only a mass reduction, compared to aluminium components, but assure also the reduction of the number of subparts and of the assembly process cycle time. On the other hand, the LI technology implies the development of more specific and advanced techniques to control the manufacturing and the weight.

Practical implications

The stiffened panel is the most used component in the aircraft structures; the solution shown in this work can find applications in many parts of an aircraft.

Originality/value

The results obtained in this work can be useful to those who work in aeronautical structural departments with the aim to reduce weight and subparts of the airframe.

Abstract

A series of painted steel panels ranging in colour from white to black have been assessed for heat build up under the Australian summer sun. The heat build up in these panels varied considerably. Two different laboratory techniques were investigated for prediction of exterior heat build up in painted substrate. Both techniques proved to have some potential, in particular the second technique involving reflectance measurements in the region of 2,400‐2,500nm. The work has also shown that a fairly good correlation exists between CIE L value and exterior heat build up in painted substrates.
