Abstract
Purpose
This study identifies key facets leading to consumers' Internet of Things (IoT) adoption intention.
Design/methodology/approach
Applying four technology acceptance theories (theory of planned behavior, technology acceptance model, pleasure-arousal-dominance theory and technology readiness index), the author uses deductive quantitative research to develop a model, explaining IoT adoption intentions. Administrated questionnaires are distributed in Egypt among generation-Z and millennials in malls. A total of 400 questionnaires are used for hypotheses testing, applying structural equation modeling (SEM) path coefficient analysis.
Findings
Results of this study show that attitude, dominance, perceived usefulness, innovativeness and insecurity impact consumers' IoT adoption intentions; subjective norms, perceived behavior control, pleasure, arousal, perceived ease, optimism and discomfort hold insignificant impact on consumers' IoT adoption intentions.
Research limitations/implications
Exploring IoT facets and how these facets impact consumers' adoption intentions, this study helps grasp technology acceptance in theory and practice, guiding scholar and practitioners (e.g. IoT developers, retailers, marketers and other field experts) to consider consumers' mindset when developing, improving and marketing IoT.
Originality/value
The contribution stems from the incorporation of various frameworks used to explain technology acceptance. By studying several theories jointly, the research extracts and identifies a significant set of facets (technical and psychological) to build a comprehensive theory of IoT acceptance, showing consumers' IoT adoption is not entirely similar to adoption of other past innovations. This understanding allows marketers to focus on content that needs to be promoted to boost consumers' IoT purchase plans. Future researchers could replicate the results to IoT categories (e.g. home appliances, cars, healthcare, education, sportswear, etc.) to improve external validity of the findings, among other future research opportunities.

Abstract
The breakdown of laminar flow in the clearance space of a journal is considered, and the point of transition is considered in relation to experiments carried out with ‘bearings’ of large clearance. Experiments involving flow visualization with very large clearance ratios of 0.05 to 0.3 show that the laminar regime gives way to cellular or ring vertices at the critical Reynolds number predicted by G. I. Taylor for concentric cylinders even in the presence of an axial flow and at a rather higher Reynolds number in the case of eccentric cylinders. The effect of the transition on the axial flow between the cylinders is small. The critical speed for transition as deduced by Taylor, is little affected by moderate axial flows and is increased by eccentricity. The effect of critical condition on the axial‐flow characteristics of the bearing system appears to be negligible, again for moderate axial flows. Assuming that the results can be extrapolated to clearances applicable to bearing operation, the main conclusion of this paper is that the breakdown of laminar flow, which is a practical possibility in very high‐speed bearings, is delayed by eccentric operation.
Abstract
Purpose
Drawing on the pleasure-arousal-dominance (PAD) emotion model, the emotional states of consumers embedded in online reviews can be described through three dimensions, that is, pleasure, arousal and dominance, rather than only the one-dimensional positive and negative polarity, as in previous studies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the effect of online review emotion on perceived review helpfulness based on these three basic emotional dimensions.
Design/methodology/approach
A lexicon-based method is developed to analyze PAD emotions of online reviews from JD.com. The zero-inflated negative binomial regression is utilized to empirically validate the study hypothesis. The authors examine the influence of pleasure, arousal, dominance, emotion diversity and emotion deviation on review helpfulness, as well as the moderating effect of product type on the relationship between all independent variables and online review helpfulness.
Findings
The study results show that the pleasure emotion impairs the helpfulness of online reviews, while the arousal and dominance emotions have a positive impact. Moreover, the authors find that compared with search products, the effects of pleasure, arousal and dominance on perceived helpfulness are strengthened for experience products. However, the emotional diversity and emotional deviation have opposite effects on the helpfulness of search products and experience products. Additionally, the results show that dominance emotion plays a more important role in the interaction effect.
Originality/value
The empirical findings confirm the applicability of PAD in the online review context and extend the existing knowledge of the influence of review emotion on helpfulness. A feasible scheme for extracting PAD variables from Chinese text is developed. The study findings also have significant implications for reviewers, merchants and platform managers of e-commerce websites.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the problems of tilting-pad thrust bearing static instability and lubrication performance under static bistability.
Design/methodology/approach
The static equilibrium state of tilting-pad thrust bearing is analyzed, and key parameters are extracted from the general lubrication model. Then, a distribution area of bearing static equilibrium points is achieved by solving the model. The area is divided into three sub-areas which represent monostabillity, bistability and instability, and an unstable boundary of the area is discovered. By these findings, a reversible lubrication failure phenomenon is explained. A calculation method is proposed to obtain bearing lubrication performance under the bistability.
Findings
The variation of working conditions can lead to migration of unstable boundary and static instability. After resuming the working conditions, unstable boundary will resume in situ, and the bearing will operate steadily again. Moreover, there is a big difference between the two groups of lubrication performance solutions under the bistability.
Practical implications
The static stability acceptance test of tilting-pad thrust bearing should be implemented under start–stop, accidental excitation and other conditions before service to prevent such lubrication failure phenomenon. Moreover, fulcrum position of the bearing pad should be kept away from the bistable area.
Originality/value
This paper has preliminarily revealed a static instability mechanism of tilting-pad thrust bearing, analyzed bistability lubrication performance and proposed some suggestions to improve the bearing stability.

Purpose
Mobile payment system (MPSs) apps are accepted as a faster, reliable and feasible substitute to conventional payment systems. However, the reception of MPS has been slower than expected despite their potential and initial reach. Limited studies have investigated factors that determine consumers' brand love (BRL) towards MPSs. This study investigates the role of MPS app characteristics on consumer emotions, continued use intentions (CUI) and BRL towards MPS apps.
Design/methodology/approach
The theoretical underpinnings of stimulus organism behaviour consequence (SOBC) and pleasure arousal dominance (PAD) theory are utilized to conceptualize the research model. The model explains the drivers of MPS BRL. Innovativeness, perceived organization and entertainment are the stimuli. Emotion, conceptualized as the second-order construct derived from pleasure, arousal and dominance, is the organism. CUI is the behaviour exhibited, and BRL towards MPS is the consequence. A survey method is used to collect data from 317 MPS consumers, and the hypotheses are tested using a structural equation modelling approach.
Findings
Results indicate that innovativeness, perceived organization and entertainment influence consumers' emotions, which affects their CUI. Emotions and CUI shape BRL. Results also show a significant mediating role of emotion and CUI.
Originality/value
Limited studies have explored BRL for utility-driven apps like MPSs. The SOBC frameworks and PAD theory provide stronger explanatory powers to the complex interplay of variables that influence consumer perceptions and decisions regarding MPSs. The study provides several practical and theoretical insights into the role of emotions in the adoption of MPS apps, a hitherto understudied relationship in literature.

Purpose
Artificial intelligence (AI) used in service has sparked fundamental changes in how enterprises engage their customers. AI specifically designed for customer service is denoted as service-oriented AI. Through the lens of social information processing theory and the pleasure-arousal-dominance (PAD) emotional state model, this study aims to examine the underlying mechanisms for service-oriented AI anthropomorphism to influence customers' propensity for value co-creation.
Design/methodology/approach
Our data were collected from hotel customers who had experienced interactions with service-oriented AI. Through purposive sampling, 350 survey responses were collected. We analyzed the survey data using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM).
Findings
This study has two key findings. Firstly, customers' propensity for value co-creation is favorably facilitated by the anthropomorphism of service-oriented AI. Secondly, the anthropomorphism of service-oriented AI can strengthen customers' perceptions of cuteness and service capacity, elicit a sense of novelty, and enhance customers' propensity to collaborate with service-oriented AI to create value. These findings address the research gaps by focusing on customer engagement through service-oriented AI and provide a theoretical basis for subsequent practical endeavors in the field.
Originality/value
Integrating the PAD emotional state model with the social information processing theory, this study explores the effects of service-oriented AI's anthropomorphism on customers' propensity for value co-creation.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the performance characteristics of an externally adjustable bearing with multiple pads in steady state conditions. The proposed adjustable bearing geometry can effectively control the hydrodynamic operation in bearing clearances by adjusting the pads in radial and tilt directions. These pad adjustments have a significant role in improving the bearing characteristics such as load capacity, attitude angle, side leakage, friction variable and Sommerfeld number, which will be analysed in this paper.
Design/methodology/approach
The adjustable bearing is designed with circumferentially spaced four bearing pads subjected to similar radial and tilt adjustments. Tilt angles are applied along the leading edges of bearing pads. A modified film thickness equation is used to incorporate the pad adjustments and accurately predict the variation in film profile. Finite difference approximation is adopted to solve the Reynolds equation and discretize the fluid film domain.
Findings
For negative radial and tilt adjustments, higher hydrodynamic pressures are generated in bearing clearances, which increases the bearing load capacity at different eccentricity ratios. From comparative analysis for different pad adjustments, superior bearing performance is observed for bearing pads under negative radial and negative tilt adjustments.
Originality/value
This research presents a detailed theoretical approach to analyse the performance capability of a four pad adjustable bearing geometry, which is not available in literatures. Improved bearing performances with negative pad adjustments can attract bearing designers to implement the proposed adjustability-bearing concept in rotating machineries.

Abstract
Purpose
This study addresses the impact of aesthetics and formality in Food Delivery Applications (FDAs) in evoking emotions, and how these influence the intention to reuse and compulsive usage, providing critical insights for designing responsible and effective marketing strategies.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative analysis of data collected from 1,029 FDA users was employed, using the PAD (Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance) theory to investigate how aesthetic design and formality affect emotions and consumer behaviour towards the applications.
Findings
The study reveals that aesthetic appeal and formality significantly impact emotions of dominance, arousal, and pleasure, which are decisive in users' decisions to continue using FDAs and in the manifestation of compulsive usage behaviours.
Research limitations/implications
This study presents inherent limitations due to its cross-sectional design, which prevents offering a longitudinal perspective on the evolution of consumer behaviour regarding FDAs. The actual purchasing behaviour is not examined, but rather the suggested experiences. Future research could be enriched by considering cultural, social, and demographic factors, the influence of sustainability on the perception and use of FDAs, and the importance of specific sustainable practices. Adopting a longitudinal approach and utilising actual usage data would allow for a deeper and more nuanced understanding of consumer behaviour towards FDAs, taking into account both personal factors and functional attributes of FDAs along with their aesthetic appeal and emotional reactions.
Practical implications
The findings provide guidelines for FDA companies to optimise their interfaces to enhance user experience, foster loyalty, and prevent compulsive usage. They emphasise balancing aesthetics and functionality to induce more conscious and sustainable consumption behaviours.
Social implications
This study highlights significant social implications stemming from the integration of aesthetic appeal and formality in Food Delivery Apps (FDAs) and their effect on consumer emotions, which in turn influences reuse intention and compulsive use. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer behaviours have shifted towards increased electronic transactions and hedonic consumption as responses to stress, anxiety, and boredom, leading to a reevaluation of life experiences through technological means. The research underlines the critical role of emotions, particularly pleasure, dominance, and arousal, in promoting the intention to reuse FDAs, which has far-reaching implications for consumer engagement, compulsive usage patterns, and the need for responsible, sustainable consumption practices. It suggests a new avenue for businesses and policymakers to consider emotional impacts and consumer satisfaction in the design and regulation of FDAs, aiming to mitigate potential adverse effects of compulsive usage and to encourage sustainable, responsible consumption behaviours.
Originality/value
The research offers a novel perspective by exploring how aesthetic and emotional dimensions affect consumer loyalty and compulsivity. These areas are still to be examined in depth in the marketing literature. The findings enhance the theoretical and practical understanding of FDA marketing, demonstrating how design can influence consumer well-being and the sustainability of purchasing behaviour.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to present a numerical model for scratched tilting-pad bearings (STPBs) with nonuniform grids. In addition, the model is used to reveal the effects of the structural parameters of bearings on the dynamic characteristics of STPBs under impact loading.
Design/methodology/approach
By combining the Reynolds equation, the flow balance equation and the assumption of adiabatic bearings and shafts, a thermo-hydrodynamic model with nonuniform grids of scratched journal bearings was built. Describing the motion of the shaft using the Euler method and introducing the pad-tilting-angle modification equation, a dynamic model of STPBs was established.
Findings
The occurrence of scratches in tilting-pad bearings yields great sensitivity to impact loading. Less width-to-diameter ratio and larger clearance ratio reduce the minimum film thickness and enlarge the maximum film pressure, which may lead to bearing collision or abrasion. Moreover, STPBs with larger clearance ratios take longer to recover from impact loading.
Originality/value
This work is original and a valuable reference for the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of STPBs. The effects of other factors on the dynamic characteristics of STPBs can be further investigated based on this model.

Abstract
Purpose
To analyse a self‐acting parallel surface thrust bearing using a proposed feedforward neural network.
Design/methodology/approach
Firstly, a one‐piece hydrodynamic thrust bearing with an initially flat surface is analysed, designed and tested. Analysis of the configuration used is particularly simple and gives good agreement with experimental results. Secondly, some artificial neural network types are designed to analyse minimum film thickness for specified load of thrust bearing system.
Findings
A more efficient film shape might result if the length of the cantilever did not increase with radius, since with the configuration used, the deflection of the outer corner was almost three times greater than the deflection of the inner corner, although this effect only becomes acute with regard to film thickness at fairly high loads. The design analysis of an asymmetric cantilever would be more lengthy and less easy to apply. Extrapolation of results for the plain bearing shows that high loads could be carried, but under severe conditions of temperature and clearance.
Research limitations/implications
Owing to finance problems, it was not easy to setup system in real time applications. This approach would be given usefulness elsewhere.
Practical implications
In future, this technique will be implemented for designing experimental neural network predictor on thrust bearing system. Also, this kind of neural predictor will be suitable for complex bearing systems.
Originality/value
A new type of neural network is used to investigate film thickness of thrust bearing system. Quick propagation neural network has given superior performance for designing of model of thrust bearing system. As described and shown in figures and tables, this kind of neural predictor could be employed for analysing such systems in practical analyses.
