Abstract

This chapter introduces classical ideas of leadership, from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and Xenophon's Anabasis, posing questions that challenge the ethical and value-based stance of the contemporary literature on authentic leadership. Do leaders in all spheres need to be versatile in the classical sense? Is the use of ruses legitimate if they succeed? Do literature and history provide greater insight into the execution of leadership than conventional business school courses? Pieper urges researchers to investigate the qualities that a leader needs and the values espoused by proponents of authentic leadership and what coherent theory that recognises the leadership imperatives exemplified by the heroic classical accounts could replace the model of authentic leadership.

Abstract

Purpose

This piece explores the philosophical origins of sense-making as defined in Brenda Dervin’s methodology.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper locates the origins of sense-making's rich ontological, epistemological and etymological heritage to the Classical Greece and the Pre-Socratic period. The Greek origins of sense-making‘s philosophical undercurrents surface again in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit before the idea is picked up again in twentieth century philosophy and library science.

Findings

This is a conceptual paper and no empirical findings are presented.

Originality/value

This paper makes an original contribution to the study of information seeking and to sense making theory and methodology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoints practical implications from cutting‐edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

The analogy of the Sirens of Greek mythology and codes of conduct is inescapable. Where Odysseus sought to hold himself back from temptation lest his ship founder on the rocks, most people at some time in their lives find themselves bound by some sort of code. However despite the proliferation of these voluntary restrictions, it is hard to find successful ones which success in what they achieve to do. Do they actually work?

Practical implications

The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world's leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy‐to‐digest format.

This review is prepared by an independent writer who provides context and commentary.

Findings

Mentoring is not a recent concept, in fact the word “mentor” comes from the ancient Greek tale of Odysseus who entrusted his son's education to his friend, Mentor. However, the value of mentoring is becoming increasingly recognized, not only in terms of individual job satisfaction and career progression but also because of the impact mentoring can have on the achievement of organizational goals.

Practical implications

Provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world's leading organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provoke discussion and reflection on the role of the erotic in the cultivation of spaces of hospitality, and to provide a theoretical consideration of the structural similarities of hospitality and eroticism.

Design/methodology/approach

With reference to classical studies as well as debates in the social science literature, the paper starts by examining some of the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings to hospitality and eroticism. It then develops this analysis by considering examples drawn from ethnographic studies of “traditional” hospitality settings as well as of commercial hospitality environments of charter tourism.

Findings

The main outcome of the discussion is to demonstrate the structural relations between hospitality and eroticism. By situating the analysis within a broad theoretical and ethnographic context, it is shown that the erotic has historically functioned as a socially‐binding and communicative mode of social intercourse that, while undermined by the demands of a market‐based culture of commercial hospitality, is also able to flourish within these same adverse conditions.

Research limitations/implications

This paper invites further research into the connections between hospitality and eroticism in settings similar to and different from those described in the paper. A fuller ethnographic study of the relationship between the two is needed, as well as an exploration of more theoretical perspectives on hospitality drawn from the social science literature.

Practical implications

By highlighting the socially binding role of eroticism in the structuring of host‐guest relations, the paper draws on and contributes to a broader politics of love and sensuality that will inform critical reflections on commercial and market‐driven hospitality practices.

Originality/value

This paper provides an original insight into the interrelationship between hospitality and eroticism. It further illuminates previous writings on both subjects but particularly that of eroticism and is supported by empirical data. It is of particular interest to those studying hospitality from a social science perspective.

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to model the vendor selection process in construction projects in Greece. The applied approach involves a multicriteria rating technique used for calculating a normalized economic bid for the alternatives (i.e. vendors) by determining a proposed multiplier coefficient. This technique uses two stage compromise programming procurement criteria and weights according to the relevant legislative framework for government procurement to provide a multicriteria value score for each vendor. The application of the approach is demonstrated by an illustrative example concerning the procurement of earthmoving equipment (i.e. bulldozer). The primary advantage of this approach is that it incorporates a degree of subjectivity into the evaluation process in compliance with the existing legislative framework.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

Twenty‐first century leadership combines precepts that are as old as ancient Greece and as up to date as the latest management theory. Using the AchieveGlobal leadership scale allows these to be articulated so that leaders can work toward encompassing the six key constructs of leadership in their management practice.

Practical implications

The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world's leading organizations.

Abstract

‘Your name? your country? who gave you those clothes?’ These famous leading questions, uttered by the shrewd Arete on seeing the much‐travelled Odysseus clad in garments belonging to her husband Alcinous, might have been echoed by the shade of Robert Eitner when confronted with the recently published first volume of the International Inventory of Musical Sources. For while Eitner would scarcely have recognized in the Inventory the principles of his own Quellen‐Lexikon, he would also have been amazed at their transformation and have wondered how and where it all happened. The format and binding of this volume are handsome, in the style of the twentieth century: the threefold location symbols begin with the letter or letters denoting each country according to the international registration of motor‐vehicles—a form of transport unimagined by Eitner. To those who tread in his footsteps, sixty years later, it is clear that without the inspiration of his great achievement the Inventory would probably have taken much longer to become a reality. Its origin must, therefore, be considered briefly in relation to its forerunner.
