Abstract

A human navigator attempts to handle the ship for safe navigation by judging navigational information on own ship’s condition, targets and current‐wind effects. He/she has the responsibility of human lives and the economic values to judge. The human navigator maintains high mental workload during the navigational watch keeping. Therefore, we need to develop a support system to reduce the mental workload with human‐system cooperation based on the navigator’s KANSEI, and we must research an index to assess the mental workload for the first step, as the research on the KANSEI of ship’s navigator is not yet available in the world. In addition we depend on the professional’s experience for the assessment. The purpose of this paper is to find characteristics of the mental workload using heart rate variability. The experiment is carried out in six types of sea area on the west side of Japan. The subject is the chief officer of a training ship at Kobe University.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of innovation management in the eighteenth century in the context of the search for precision time keeping in the watch making industry. In particular it looks at how knowledge was managed and transferred among interested stakeholders in the process.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews the published horological literature on the subject and considers it within modern theories relating to the management of innovation.

Findings

This paper illustrates that personal contact and collaboration is important to the development of innovation. The paper highlights the importance of networking in the process of innovation and collaboration as a means to share and develop ideas. Collaboration with organisations working in adjacent technologies was found to be present and competition promoted by the incentive of financial reward was found to be a motivator factor for moving innovation forward.

Originality/value

This paper will be helpful to academics who study innovation history as well as current innovation management practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose that the measurement of salivary amylase activity is an effective index to evaluate the stress of a ship navigator for safe navigation training and education.

Design/methodology/approach

Evaluation comes from the simulator and actual on‐board experiments. The subjects are real captains who have unlimited licenses and cadets who are senior students at Kobe University, navigation course. Stress is evaluated for several situations where a ship navigator makes a lot of decisions, in this case in a narrow passage, entering a port and leaving a port.

Findings

Salivary amylase activity occurs when a ship navigator makes a decision regarding ship handling and collision avoidance. By measuring salivary amylase activity when a student is under duress, cadets' ship‐handling training can be evaluated while onboard a vessel.

Research limitations/implications

Future research will develop cross‐indices with the salivary amylase activity and other physiological indices (nasal temperature and heart rate variability (R‐R interval)), complementary to each other. The salivary amylase activity registers the stress quickly on the spot. Then the nasal temperature and R‐R interval registers the trend and the quick response to the stress (mental workload).

Practical implications

The paper describes an effective index which is useful for evaluating a ship navigator's stress for safe navigation.

Originality/value

Ship navigator's skill and cadet's on‐board training have been evaluated according to performance and a questionnaire as a quantitative evaluation; moreover, stress is evaluated using salivary amylase activity.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose that the nasal temperature is an effective index to evaluate the mental workload of a navigator for effective navigation.

Design/methodology/approach

The evaluation comes from the actual on‐board experiment, not simulation. The subject is real bridge teammates; captain, duty officer, and quarter master. The mental workload is evaluated for a lot of navigational situations.

Findings

The nasal temperature responds when the navigator makes a decision regarding ship‐handling and collision avoidance, and shows well the whole trend of his decision‐making. Then the nasal temperature takes effect to evaluate the bridge team work among captain, duty officer and quarter master.

Research limitations/implications

Future research is to make cross‐indices with the nasal temperature and the heart rate variability (R‐R interval) complementary to each other where the nasal temperature registers the trend and the R‐R interval registers the quick response of the mental workload.

Practical implications

The paper describes the effective index which is useful to evaluate bridge teammates’ mental workload for effective navigation.

Originality/value

Navigator's skill has been evaluated according to behavior (performance) and a questionnaire as a quantitative evaluation; moreover, the mental workload tries to do it using nasal temperature and heart rate variability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to describe the experiences of four children with autism spectrum disorder navigating around the corridors of an unfamiliar school and translate the findings into poetic format. Poetry could provide a more accessible format to a nonacademic audience and promote empathy and understanding about this population.

Design/methodology/approach

Each participant was shown a route from the start point to the destination by the researcher then asked to lead the way there. Post-study, participants were interviewed for their perceptions and feelings about navigating.

Findings

Participants' responses and behaviors differed, e.g. some were stimulated by colors, some noticed small details and some were distracted. Poetic translation vividly emphasized these behaviors and emotions.

Originality/value

Few studies have described how children with autism navigate the built environment or asked their opinion about navigating. None in the field have used poetic translation to explore data.

Abstract

There is neither doubt nor debate that career decision-making is essential and has long-term effects on the lives of individuals, families and communities. Despite the utmost significance of career decision-making, it is well acknowledged in the literature that it remains difficult for young people in many countries worldwide to make informed and meaningful career decisions. Concerning this difficulty, this chapter presents findings from a small-scale doctoral research project investigating what influences students’ career decision-making at one public technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The doctoral study on which this paper reports was framed within an interpretive framework and used focus groups and individual interviews to generate data. Following the original research project, we frame this chapter within the sociological perspective, thereby focusing on the notions of careership (Hodkinson & Sparkes, 1997) and navigational capacity (Appadurai, 2004). Also, the sociological perspective reveals the tension and relation between structure and agency. Several factors influence young people’s career decision-making, for example, socio-economic status and capacity to aspire, life turning points, and horizons of action and possibility. The findings show that the participants operate from a position of disadvantage and lack; hence, career decision-making is more of a mission than a natural step in education and training. The chapter concludes that educational institutions should expand the horizon for action and improve the navigational maps of young people as they move through education and career paths.

Abstract

Lecture recording provides learning material for local and distance education. The TeleTeachingTool uses the very flexible screen recording technique to capture virtually any material displayed during a presentation. With its built‐in annotation system teachers can add freehand notes and emphasize important parts. Unlike other screen recorders, our implementation offers slide‐based navigation, full text search and annotated scripts, which are obtained by automated post‐production. This article presents how automated analysis generates indices for slide‐based navigation on the fly and how to achieve live interlinkage of annotations with slides so that annotations disappear when a slide is changed and are made visible again when returning to that slide later during presentation, although screen recorders generally do not provide an association of annotations with slides.
