Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to compare the characteristics of performance measurement in cross-functional and supplier-oriented purchasing and supply management (PSM) practices. It clarifies the purposes and content of performance measurement in three PSM practices.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiple case study approach is utilized in this study. Each of the cases is related to a contemporary performance measurement development project during the period 2015–2016. Interviews are conducted to obtain a pre-understanding of the research questions at hand. The case studies continue as an action research including measurement development workshops.

Findings

Identification of causalities between measurement objects and the measurement value benefits are contemporary issues of performance measurement development in the PSM context. The findings indicate that the measurement of outputs and outcomes instead of inputs and measurement supporting supplier relationship management is increasingly important in the service context. Measurement purpose affects the characteristics of PSM performance measurement. This study identifies that more informal control and non-standard measures are needed in interactive PSM practices such as cross-functional integration.

Research limitations/implications

The study provides practical examples of performance measurement in service purchasing, classifies the characteristics of performance measurement and highlights the need to extend the scope of measurement in the PSM context. The findings of the case studies reported support practitioners in developing performance measurement that satisfies contemporary managerial needs.

Originality/value

Earlier studies are often not explicit with the purpose of performance measurement. This study contributes to the existing literature by linking performance measurement characteristics to the understanding of PSM practices and providing a wider overview of the varying characteristics of performance measurement supporting strategic purchasing of services.

Abstract

In implementing strategies to achieve ambitious goals, managers use tools such as performance measurement systems (PMS) for their proven ability to motivate and drive employees’ behaviors. However, many strategies fail during implementation, partly because managers pay insufficient attention to PMS design, tending to devote too little attention to characteristics of the metrics they use to evaluate and provide feedback on their subordinates’ performance. This chapter discusses the management control literature on metrics, the psychology behind the behavioral effects of measurements, typical managerial errors in choosing performance metrics, and previous attempts to define characteristics of good measurements. It suggests that good measurements should exhibit a set of characteristics associated with a novel and easily remembered acronym, STORY, and tests this typology by analyzing empirical data gathered on 1,159 metrics from 293 survey respondents, including characteristics of the people measured (e.g., age, position, and functional department) and the organizations employing them (e.g., firm size, industry, scope, and type of organization).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the distinctive features of service performance measurement. It also provides an overview of current status of performance measurement in three service sectors in Finland.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper builds on two complementary empirical studies. In the first study, data were gathered through individual interviews in Finnish service organizations. In the second study, group interviews were held in order to enhance the understanding. The service sectors studied are knowledge-intensive, public and industrial services. There are two main units of analysis in the data set: an organization and service operations.

Findings

The results show that the specific performance measurement characteristics are more apparent at service operations level. The findings reveal three distinctive features of service performance measurement. First, the contingency perspective stresses a need to consider the characteristics of different service contexts. Second, customer-orientation implies that the measurement should also cover customers’ actions during the service operation as well as the impacts of service operations. Third, the systemic perspective proposes that performance measurement should encompass all actors participating to service operations.

Research limitations/implications

The results provide support for structuring the existing research and identifying paths for future research. They also assist practitioners in their search for best measurement practices.

Originality/value

This paper contributes by providing empirical insights from three service sectors on the development needs of performance measurement. The findings provide understanding on what exactly makes service performance measurement problematic and suggests three paths to move forward.

Abstract

The paper identifies six requirements: four critical dimensions (what to measure) and two characteristics (how to measure) of an overall manufacturing performance measurement system. The overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) measure in such a system is assessed against these ideal requirements. The current measurement systems, and the potential of OEE, of three manufacturing organisations are evaluated with the dimensions and characteristics as comparative data. A common weakness of the systems was that they did not measure flow orientation or external effectiveness to any great extent. Another weakness was a high degree of complexity and lack of continuous improvement. Field experiments in the studied organisations showed that use of OEE in combination with an open and decentralised organisation design could improve several of those weaknesses.

Purpose

Anthropometry as one of anthropology methods is concerned with the measurement of the human body and determining the relationship of the size and proportions of the human body. Aims to outline the main features of the Croatian anthropometric system (HAS).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper provides a description of the major characteristics included in HAS, the STIRP project supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports by means of the HITRA program.

Findings

In its TEST subprogram, HAS includes the first systematic anthropometric measurement in all Croatian counties and in the city of Zagreb. The objective of HAS is to determine a proposal of the new size system of clothing and footwear. The paper describes major characteristics included: anthropometric measurements and target points, part of practical measurements, survey of measurements based on age groups and instruments used for these purposes, notes about field measurements and HAS users.

Practical implications

The implementation of HAS has been harmonized with International Organization for Standardization and EN standards and represents a considerable contribution on the path to the EU.

Originality/value

Provides information of value to those concerned with developments in the clothing and garment industries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the prerequisites for performance measurement supporting purchaser-supplier relationships and value co-creation. It also explains the causes for the limited use of collaborative measurement.

Design/methodology/approach

Four case companies representing different contextual settings are studied. The primary source of empirical material is an interview study addressed to 24 interviewees. The empirical data are analyzed according to the constructs created as a result of the literature review.

Findings

The results reveal that prevailing performance measurement practices represent a more transactional than relationship-oriented approach to purchaser-supplier collaboration. The technical prerequisites for collaborative performance measurement are mostly not fulfilled, inhibiting the use of performance measurement in a collaborative manner. It is proposed that the differentiation between project and process production types has implications on the importance of collaborative performance measurement.

Research limitations/implications

The paper illustrates the desirable characteristics of performance measurement supporting collaboration. It also presents an application of collaborative performance measurement in a single case context. The research reveals the need to develop non-financial performance measures further in order to facilitate the more proactive use of performance measurement supporting true value co-creation between purchaser and supplier companies.

Originality/value

The empirical research on the topic of performance measurement in purchasing and supply management (PSM) is often limited to intra-organizational measurement and highlights transactional approach to collaboration between parties, although PSM research has otherwise acknowledged the importance of value creation and relationships between organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

A solution to increase the energy production rate of the wind turbine is proposed by forcing more air to move through the turbine working section. This can be achieved by equipping the rotor with a diffusing channel ended with a brim (diffuser augmented wind turbine – DAWT). The purpose of this paper is to design an experimental stand and perform the measurements of velocity vector fields through the diffuser and power characteristic of the wind turbine.

Design/methodology/approach

The experiments were carried out in a small subsonic wind tunnel at the Institute of Turbomachinery, Lodz University of Technology. An experimental stand design process as well as measurement results are presented. Model size sensitivity study was performed at the beginning. The experimental campaign consisted of velocity measurements by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV) and pneumatic pitot probe as well as torque and rotational velocity measurements.

Findings

Characteristics (power coefficient vs tip speed ratio) of the bare and shrouded wind turbine were obtained. The results show an increase in the wind turbine power up to 70-75 per cent by shrouding the rotor with a diffuser. The mechanisms responsible for such a power increase were well explained by the PIV and pneumatic measurement results revealing the nature of the flow through the diffuser.

Research limitations/implications

Experimental stand for wind turbine rotor testing is of a preliminary character. Most optimal methodology for obtaining power characteristic should be determined now. Presented results can serve as good input for choice of stable and reliable control system of wind turbine operational parameters.

Practical implications

A 3 kW DAWT is being developed at the Institute of Turbomachinery, Lodz University of Technology. Aim of the study is to design a compact and smart wind turbine optimised for low wind speed conditions. Developed wind turbine has a potential to be used as an effective element within a net of distributed generation, e.g. for domestic use.

Originality/value

Research carried out is the continuation of theoretical study began in 1970s. It was also inspired by practical solutions proposed by Japanese researchers few years ago. Presented paper is the summary of work devoted to optimisation of the DAWT for wind conditions in the region. Original solution has been applied, e.g. for experimental stand design (3D printing application).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to review the use of partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) in the field of hospitality and tourism and thereby to assess whether the PLS-SEM-based papers followed the recommended application guidelines and to investigate whether a comparison of journal types (hospitality vs tourism) and journal qualities (top-tier vs other leading) reveal significant differences in PLS-SEM use.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 206 PLS-SEM based papers published between 2000 and April 2017 in the 19 SSCI-indexed hospitality and tourism journals were critically analyzed using a wide range of guidelines for the following aspects of PLS-SEM: the rationale of using the method, the data characteristics, the model characteristics, the model assessment and reporting the technical issues.

Findings

The results reveal that some aspects of PLS-SEM are correctly applied by researchers, but there are still some misapplications, especially regarding data characteristics, formative measurement model evaluation and structural model assessment. Furthermore, few significant differences were found on the use of PLS-SEM between the two fields (hospitality and tourism) and between the journal tiers (top-tier and other leading).

Practical implications

To enhance the quality of research in hospitality and tourism, the present study provides recommendations for improving the future use of PLS-SEM.

Originality/value

The present study fills a sizeable gap in hospitality and tourism literature and extends the previous assessments on the use of PLS-SEM by providing a wider perspective on the issue (i.e. includes both hospitality and tourism journals rather than the previous reviews that focus on either tourism or hospitality), using a larger sample size of 206 empirical studies, investigating the issue over a longer time period (from 2000 to April, 2017, including the in-press articles), extending the scope of criteria (guidelines) used in the review and comparing the PLS-SEM use between the two allied fields (hospitality and tourism) and between the journal tiers (top-tier and other leading).

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyse performance measurement ambiguities in hybrid universities. In accounting research, performance measurement of universities has been discussed in detail, and there is some research on impacts of hybridity in institutional systems. However, there is a particular need in accounting research for more sophisticated theorizations of the ambiguities associated with measuring performance in hybrid organizations. Moreover, there is a dearth of accounting-related interdisciplinary studies conceptualizing the hybridity of universities with important implications for measuring and reporting performance. This paper fills this research gap by providing more elaborate basis for conceptualizing performance measurement ambiguities through the lenses of hybrid universities.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors critically scrutinize the promise of performance measurement in hybrid universities and explore why it may result in new policy problems. Questions asked are as follows: How can we better understand those institutional mechanisms through which the promise of performance measurement may ultimately result in new forms of ambiguities and unexpected outcomes, and what are the specific characteristics of hybridity that make those mechanisms possible in universities?

Findings

The authors propose a conceptual model for studying universities in hybrid performance settings. The model provides a new inter-disciplinary approach for conceptualizing performance measurement ambiguities in universities when they are influenced by hybridity, hybrid arrangements and hybrid governance.

Originality/value

This paper provides more elaborate basis for understanding hybridity of universities, not only through reforms for combining business, government and collegial professional logics (e.g. corporatization, marketization) or through new hybrid mixes of professions but also as a more comprehensive, inter-disciplinary understanding of institutional structures, logics and practices at modern universities.

Abstract

Purpose

Literature describes the transformation process of employees’ individual competences into firm-specific competences as a great challenge in the performance management and management field. Recently, to favor the transformation of competences, some companies have adopted enterprise social networking (ESN). However, not enough studies support the understanding of its role in performance management and measurement and scant attention is given to the inclusion of competences in a holistic performance measurement and management system (PMMS). To help close this gap, the purpose of this paper is to develop knowledge on the role of ESN in measurement and management of competences to favor the development of a holistic PMMS.

Design/methodology/approach

The research adopts a multiple case study methodology using a qualitative meta-analysis. It investigates 32 multinational companies by case studies available in the scientific literature.

Findings

The results highlight the use of ESN as a relevant support for the development of a holistic PMMS based on a high maturity in performance measurement and a democratic and participative approach in performance management. ESN provides real-time data collection, analysis and reports that encourage a democratic and participative performance management. It facilitates relationships, knowledge sharing and favors a high maturity performance measurement.

Originality/value

The paper provides implications for theory, practice and society. First, the paper rationalizes the impact of ESN usage on performance measurement and management. Second, it offers new knowledge supporting practitioners in the development of holistic PMMS. Third, it highlights that ESN favors people in self-expression of own capacity, sharing artwork and knowledge on specific topics.
